The voice of reason who told me to just get different colors was probably correct, but since autism trumps reason any day I instead went and bought the full set on top of what I already had. Was a pretty cheap offer by Bricklink standards and fairly close geographically as well, so no regrets there. Quick summary of my impressions:
>love the dino look just as much as I thought I would
>god-tier action feature
>interesting leg joints
>bit boring that the only real difference between the two builds is what goes on the nose
>the gut ripping/cock gobbling function is weird, luckily an extra axle is all it takes to turn it off
>the official instructions from the Lego site have visible mouse pointers all over the place and it really makes me worry about how they're made

I repurposed as many of the leftover parts as I could to fill other holes in the collection, but quite a few still remained after that ...

My biggest pet peeve with Bahrag is that if you're missing the rubber bands, they turn into a bloody floppy mess. I also to this day haven't figured out a way to pose the legs in dynamic way. Also also, try not to be too rough with the action function. It's built in a way that the gears start to grind when the head retracts back.

Thanks m8. It's a bit finicky, but actually surprisingly stable if I get it in the right pose. The surface of the photobooth was a bit slippery though.

Hell yeah it punches. The right arm works like a Bohrok head, albeit modified a bit. The left arm is like the punching arm from the Exo Toa.

It looks really good, anon. I do have some advice if you're willing to hear, though:

Yeah, I had that Takanuva set, incorporating those doubled-up ball joints would definitely be a good idea. I try to make my bigger MOCs as sturdy as possible at the joints, but I'd like to not rely on the friction extenders whenever I can.

Well yeah, that's the main problem. This is the lowest price you have to pay to get both as of today.
But call it a fox and grape situation (aka coping), but... I've seen a movie Teridax MOC that used the Smaug wings and I'm not a huge fan. It's nice that they are big and foldable, but they look too organic on a Bionicle figure, and even compared to his movie wings.

There were so many colors back in that era that just fucking died when the Metru came out. Imagine if Lego hadn't gone so hard on those colors, or even kept mask packs around for people to moc with. Tarakava teal is one I'm particularly upset about not being reused.

You can ocasionally get incomplete ones for 25€. The problem is finding the parts in a quantity you want and a seller that has all the parts. Not splitting up the orders will make you choose a seller with higher prices most of the tim, just because you still save money on shipping. And even then I have to order from 3 or 4 sellers. Why do so many hate on them? I personally love the dark colours. The bright two tone of Mata and Nuva wouldn't fit in that particulat Metru arc anyways. They grey was just too much. They should have went with sand colours as secondary, maybe dark tan for Onewa and dark and light bley for Whenua and Nuju. That goes for all characters after that too. I like how they did it on Lhikan, Iruini and Norik tho, that was better. The real pain was the growing amount of silver in the years after that.

The disaster was autistically using ONLY Metru colors+dark grey for a whole year. 2005 fixed it by adding Mata colors back and using them alongside Metru colors. The Visorak have some of the most interesting color schemes ever used on a Bionicle set.

I think the Piraka were actually the pinnacle of metru colour use. all their technic bits were beautifully contrasted with their primary metru bits, and the use of the pearl metallic colours looked great as a tertiary colour, even if two were just standard silver. I think people typically lament the metru colours simply because they reduce the variety of pieces available for mocing. I don't mind the metru colours, but I definitely wish I had more official options for purple, teal, jaller yellow etc.

Adding tertiary colours can be a bit if a dilemma sometimes.
I'm currently building a few Toa that are elite, meaning they have some sort of metallic armor. If I can use the metallic as secondary, the easy teriary is gonna be black.
Sometimes however I have clear two tone paint schemes like for Toa of Plasma, and I don't know how much metallic to use or even which metallic colour to begin with.
That's why Lhikan and the Hagah worked well, because they elevated metallic to secondary and reduced tertiary to a minimum. For me oersonally it still looks too busy on the Piraka, even if some of their secondaries would look good on the Metru. The Metru didn't need bright colours like the Mata, but rather de-saturated lighter shades of their primary, Nuju darker ofc.

Just make the plane jane secondary color (like white on a toa of plasma) a very minimal color and put it on joints or in technic bits if possible. It'll bleed out in the overall color scheme but the orange+metallic will still be the main colors.

The way it is now the male one needs a rebuild and the female is barely started, so I'll probably try your recommendation on the latter one first. Also I might try to incorporate trans neon orange heavily on one of them.

Thanks. The one with the Zamor sphere is the goalie, thus the shield. The shooty end is supposed to be there where the hammer is on the original part.

It’s not that dark colors are bad inherently, it’s more that they REPLACED the original bright ones. And if I had to choose between only one palette and another, I’ll choose the mata colors every time; the later years seemed to entirely replace mata colors with metru. Also related but undeserved is the metru colors’ association with the takeover of grey. It’s not the fault of the dark colors themselves that the toa metru all have ugly grey internal colors but it’s hard to disassociate the two in your mind when so many sets afterward combined both. 2009 is a great example of blending dark colors and bright colors while, most importantly, REMOVING the ubiquitous grey scheme and most would agree that year’s sets are among the strongest color designs in G1.

While I think only dark grey was a bad choice, it still worked. It was with the Hordika that it got bland, especially once that silver came in. As another Anon pointed out, the Visorak already combined Metru with more vibrant and brighter colours. The Rahaga used the same grey limbs as the Metru Matoran which also were too grey, that was boring. And then in 2006 it was completely different colours again, removing most of the grey. Still people say that years after 2004 was too grey, yet for me the metallic colours seemed overused. But good for getting parts I guess.

Grey “worked” as in it was passable. I’ve heard plenty of people excuse grey but few that actively loved it. As compared to having either another solid color as the base or using the bolder greyscale color of straight black, grey is an unsatisfying stopgap. While not the worst, there’s just always something a little drab, a little soul sucking when grey is the underlying color. To put it another way, base grey doesn’t make my eyes bleed but it does make them glaze over.

It worked for me for the Toa Metru. I would've preferred sand blue, green, red, along with dark tan, dark grey and light grey. Never would I have chosen bright colours, that just doesn't fit the setting and tone.
That being said, grey disease was still judt 2004 ans half of 2005. After that it only came up occasionally.

Personally I wish they used grey more sparingly but had the balls to make it a prominent color on an individual instead of a color used to unify a team. Prime example is how 08's Phantoka suffered from the overuse of grey same as the Mistika suffered from overuse of silver. If they had had individual color schemes and one member of each squad had grey/silver and the other two their own secondaries I think it would have went over far better.

Speaking of color schemes, which matoran/toa are the hardest to make color schemes for? Imo it's the Ko-Matoran because you can only do white and blue or white and grey so many times before it gets boring. What other colors would you even use for a matoran of ice?

honestly I think all you can really do is experiment with different shades of blue and grey. sand blue accents gives a pretty different look to mata blue for instance, but both look recognizably ice-like imo. I'd say the easiest is probably ta-matoran/toa, just because any warm colour can fit the bill effectively, and even a few cold ones don't look too out of place(takua comes to mind)

I think it would be interesting if 2 of the fanon Hagah use gunmetal as their secondary, seeing as how Norik was Red/silver and Iruini was Green/gold. It probably wouldn't even be unrealistic because the Piraka torsos were 2 gold 2 silver 2 gunmetal.

I've posted infrequently here, trying to build some super-titans using a ton of tech and weird parts usage that ought to be completely massive. One that's a Ga-Matoran basically fused to a mech suit similar to an exo-toa, and the other is a rahi that's moderately godzilla-esque.

So last thread an anon asked for unpopular opinions about Bionicle and after refreshing myself better with some of the lore I can say I got some unpopular opinions.

Given how the lore has things like Plant-Life, Iron, and Sonics as elements, it's a shame they never made many if any sets on them along with the parts that match those element's palette.

Since most of the Mata-Nui/Nuva stuff had more saturated colors, yellow not being there usually feels odd. Sure they use yellow once in awhile but it wasn't till like Mata Nui was a set when they made yellow a primary color.

It wasn't perfect, but neither was the earlier stuff, plus I liked the idea of an ancient, abandoned metropolis that paints a different picture about their universe. It's like the counter opposite of the tribal life 2001-2003 showed, which I think was pretty neat.

I love the builds minus the brittleness, but man some of the visual choices are something to be desired. It made them look more pure sci-fi versus the original magitek feel of the early years. (I know that's somewhat hypocritical since I like Metru Nui which is basically more sci-fi than magitek)

And lastly:

The early years had Exo-Toa and the combiner builds, but then around the mid-2000s I don't remember seeing any sets around vehicles. The only vehicles I can remember well are the various jets from Mistika/Phantoka.

I find it odd how "gappy" is still a word people throw around seriously, as if the Toa Mata and the Rahi weren't extremely gappy from the very beginning. This is the series where being an anorexic monkey is considered standard.

Claiming to be the same character while looking completely different is why people fucking hate the Mistika. Matoro Inika wasn't a hunchback, making him one solely to accommodate the chest foot is unnecessarily reinventing the wheel. Unlike Onua and Whenua, who were cave dwellers, there is less or no narrative or design legacy reasons for him to be like that. Pretty sure it also contributes to the uneven weight that makes him unstable on the dinky feet.
I don't really know if gappy was the right word to use, but I really think Matoro Mahri is the weakest 07 canister build. Even worse than Hewkii.

Do I want them to revive it? Idk. If they make a cool storyline to expand old Metru Nui, like Matoran civil war or Dark Hunters, sure. After reuniting the plantes could also be interesting. Sure, I'd love them to revive it.

I just think the plot & writing of bionicle isn't actually that solid and that the lore actually is really good, and therefore getting all of it as if you were reading a historical document or similar is the best option. I enjoy the world immensely, but the stories themselves are iffy at best most of the time.
