My dad started this layout more than 25 years ago and then got too busy with the rest of his life and progress stalled out, and it's been neglected ever since. Now he's mostly retired, is selling his house soon, and wants to start a new layout when he gets a new place, so I'm helping him salvage anything useful out of the old layout.

The problem I've run into is that pretty much every spot where track sections were connected with metal joiners has welded itself solid. It's mostly flextrack and I can just clip the last cm or so off of those segments without too much worry but I'm at a bit of a loss with the switches, they're the parts we'd most like to preserve but we need to get the joiners separated from them if they'll ever be usable again. Any suggestions?

I'm neither, but I'm also not that into the trains themselves, it's the layouts themselves and the research, design, modeling, and weathering involved in building them that really interest me. The trains are just a convenient framework to build around and something to give motion and interactivity to what would otherwise be a static lifeless diorama.

I've been wondering the same thing for a while. My gut feeling is that he's more normal than he comes off and the weirdness mostly comes from him knowing that he has a lot of kids in his audience and has to stay super tame because of it.

Getting back into the hobby after like 15 years off and what the fuck is going on?
I collect UK N gauge stuff but can't find any good resources for news/reviews so just been checking out 00 stuff just out of curiousity.
From what I can gather models are twice the price they were just 15 years ago and while I have to admit they are more detailed it seems you get fucked over with 3 pole motors, chinesium quality mechanisms and almost no QC at all from the factory, makes me really really not want to buy anything new.

You mean there are electrical switches for the points?

If so I would cut out the switches or prise them off of the base board. Then if needed cut the track precisely with a hacksaw past the first join so that they can be taken to a workshop for further inspection. It is possible to purchase new fish plates to join track together so that might help salvage the switches once you have removed them from the base board.

Please contact a specialist model shop for better advice.

There has been an attempt at digital power controls. Electrical chips to simulate sounds can now be fitted to wagons and carriages and locomotives. I haven't noticed a problem with quality control as of yet from Hornby.

Switch as in turnout or points, like the pic, not electrical switch. (The electrical side is Tortoise motors under the baseboard and those are easy to deal with.) Cutting the track on the far side of the join (where it's easily replaced flextrack that I'm cutting) is exactly what I've been doing and I'll definitely be getting new joiners if I can get the old ones separated, but it's getting that done that's the problem. I really don't want to cut any track off the turnouts/points themselves because there really isn't much room to do it, very short distance between the frog and the join.

Ah yeah, DCC was just taking off when I put the trains on hiatus, I can see the appeal for massive layouts but the size of loop I have currently doesn't justify the insane cost of everything to implement it, plus basically all my rolling stock is ancient Farish, Hornby Minitrix and Peco so retrofitting decoders to them all sounds like a terrific pain in the arse.

On that note, I was using pic related as my controller as it was a hand me down from my dads 00 stuff but now I've learnt that it's PWM, which is apparently not great for the small sensitive motors of n gauge stuff, any recommendations for a DC controller? Or should I just bite the bullet on one of those Gaugemaster controllers? I don't mind a bit of jank in the set up if I can get two separate controllers fairly cheap.

I'd rather have lower priced, lower quality locos and rolling stock that is easier for the average joe to afford than paying out the ass for used models just because everything new has so much detail. I just don't understand what happened to the idea of having low end models that weren't just cartoon 0-4-0s

yep, completely agree, even the 'entry level' ranges like hornby railroad and bachman branchline don't many any fucking sense. They just mean "here's our old, dated mouldings from 20 years ago at a new higher price!" whilst the flagship ranges carry even more of a premium for the detailing (and not necessarily the mechanisms, apparently).

It's even worse with N, a 'railroad/branchline' style range doesn't even exist in the first place so it's either buy the super expensive, super detailed, fragile new model, or get the simple, dated, probably inaccurate version from 30 years ago, if it even existed at all (UK N is kinda slim pickings with basically one company calling the shots for most of the past 50 years)

On a lighter note, I picked up pic related for an absolute steal recently thanks to old people still not understanding how ebay works after all this time, so I've finally acquired N scale versions of everything I used to have in 00

Hate this shit, I get that christmas train sets are a thing of the past by now but we should be getting SOME new, cheap mouldings. Honestly I'm a little bit upset that the most wealthy and autistic of modellers have let them drive up this racket because they need the whistle to be aligned to the right scale nanometer. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a basic model that you have to spruce up a bit for a bit less money. That's part of the appeal of the hobby right? If I could just buy entire finished hills and perfectly ballasted trackbeds and foliaged retaining walls, why would I bother?

I think that the manufacturers are painting themselves into a corner right now with this.

Their target audience appears to be affluent boomer types whose hands are slowly getting more and more arthritic and so are more and more willing to shell out shitloads for these ready to run high detail models as they can no longer detail them themselves, the rest of us can go fuck ourselves apparently.

It wouldn't be so bad if the lower tier models were the old body tooling running on nice modern standard chassis/motors, but they're not, they're literally the exact models from 20/30 years ago warts and all, of course people are going to look at second hand stuff first.

I do wonder what will happen when the boomer generation fully dies out, maybe these companies will find their customer base disappear into basically nothing and they'll be left scrambling to keep afloat like they never saw it coming, Hornby went bankrupt once already for basically this very reason and has only seen profit for the first time in years thanks to covid lockdowns, the future doesn't look bright.

I had another depressing thought. All the current modellers never saw steam engines on the lines they model, only pictures and other modellers representations. I wonder how much living knowledge, of how it looks and feels, is lost, and how much that impacts modellers today. IN 20 or 30 years, will people even know what a steam run line looks like? Who even remembers besides really old fucks what it felt like to actually watch a gang of dudes watering a big, filthy locomotive in a grimy station?

Don't know about elsewhere in the world but the UK are covered pretty well in this regard. We've got heritage railways all over the country and one of them even has an unbroken section of double track, so they can show steam locos passing each other in motion rather than one having to wait in a station or passing loop. Some of our best steam locomotives frequently do tours on the mainline and always draw a shitload of hype wherever they pass through, although that's not always a good thing...
Just last month a loco flat-spotted it's wheels doing an emergency stop because some cunts trespassed on the line to get a closer look as it went past.

About the steam trains. I think it might be a regional thing. I frequent the RMweb which is mainly a uk forum, but the how-to knowledge is what i'm there for. I notice that there are lots of people running steam engines on their layouts. Then i compare that to forums from my country and steam is a very niche thing, our largest domestic manufacturer have made 2 steam models that i know of in contrast to many many diesels and electric ones. Another example is my dad, soon in his 60s, so borderline boomer. He is not a fan of steam locos "if i never saw one running irl (and not some heritage run) i don't want it on my layout." I have his mindset now, steam doesn't interest me one bit.

On another note, switches in HO scale with concrete sleepers, are there any available?

A lot of that could be down to how long the UK held on to steam power in comparison to other developed parts of the world, we didn't seriously start introducing alternative motive power until 1955, with steam finally being retired in 1968. Because of this, anyone from the UK 60 or over will have definitely seen or ridden on steam power on the main line as a kid.

Other places like the USA were bringing in diesel and electric power into regular passenger services from the 1930s, so the romanticised connections people today have with the railroads have predominantly featured those, as steam was relegated more and more to freight work until retired completely.

To add, the way the UK approached preservation is also a big factor, many important locomotives were preserved or set aside way before they were in danger of being scrapped, and when the mass retirement of steam happened in the late 1960s thousands upon thousands of locomotives waited in scrap yards ready for people to just buy up for their heritage railways, so they are all well stocked making them popular tourist attractions.

I'm 27 and model almost exclusively steam, I can't deny the original Thomas series probably had something to do with that, but my family was also dragging me to heritage railways around the country from the moment I could hold my my own head up so I got plenty of chances to see steam power in all its glory.

Given unlimited money and free time, I'd love to also model the UK midland region in the 1990s as that was the main line in my childhood, but the route is entirely electrified which adds yet another layer of complexity and realistically there's only so much I can devote to this hobby.

You guys have a great preservation culture, which is impressive considering how much BR genuinely hated steam. I think I read somewhere that they would block preservation sales occasionally even if they were offered more than the scrap value.

Steam is an order of magnitude more interesting to me just from a mechanical perspective alone. I wish I could afford one of those massive live steamers just to experience firing up and steaming up my own engine. Diesels are cool enough from an operational perspective, and if it's something I remember from childhood then I like it, but they're just much less interesting to me in general. Half the appeal of railways to me is the steam engine. Still, nothing compares in boredom to DMU/EMU shit. Good god, how can people model entire facilities to shuttle those electric dildos back and forth without blowing their brains out?

I got my start years ago with a hornby freight starter set, and even though I expanded and added more track, locomotives and rolling stock, I still remained fond my original 0-4-0 and it still had a place alongside everything else I had (it did have a BR livery which helped it fit in) even if it couldn't pull for shit. Point is, it was an actual base to build up from, not cheap tat that goes in the bin once it's outgrown.

Yeah this might be the cause, over here the mainlines were also electrified by the 1930s and steam phased out more and more. The preservation probably played a huge part in steams popularity especially if you could easily see, hear and feel steam locomotives. I can probably count how many times I've seen steam loco running on one hand. And it might be why I'm not really into steam, i can't really relate to them as I've barely seen them. A quick look at out national railway museum tells me they have 36 steam locos but does not tell of what state they are in.

A solid steel forged frame that included the cylinders. 80,000 lbs of tractive effort, 5000 hp at the drawbar. Despite having 70 inch drivers, perfectly balanced light weight valve gear allowed extended running at 100 mph. Forced lubrication from resiviors meant the J Class could go 1300 miles without additional lubrication. The Js were equally at home hauling high speed passenger trains, fast freight trains or heavy coal drags.

Pennsylvania has the Straussburg Railroad. It's the oldest continuously operating railroad in the Western hemisphere. The US started dropping steam in favor of diesels in earnest in the 1950's. Norfolk and Western and Union Pacific were some of the last Cass I holdouts and retired the last of their steam around 1958. The saving grace for preservation is that lot of Class II and Class III roads held onto steam well into the late 60's since the initial outlay for diesels was high compared to keeping the steam they had running. A lot of locks got scrapped. Then there was a revival of interest in steam in the 1970's and there was a scramble to preserve what was left.

Around 2016 I got into three rail O gauge. I decided to stick with the more "Traditional" toy side of things. Traditional three rail O can vary from tinplate toy trains to fairly realistic engines and rolling stock that can run on far tighter curves than proper O scale equipment can. So you can cram a some fairly large trains into a small space. Curves in three rail O are expressed in diameter instead of radius, so an 18" radius three rail O curve would be expressed as O36. Pic is a K Line 2-6-6-6 Allegheny. It's shrunk down from 1/48 to 1/58 scale, has blind center drivers, and unlike the prototype, the rear engine is articulated instead of fixed. It will run on O31, that is, 15.5" radius curves.

Here's a downscaled three rail O K Line 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Like the Allegheny, it has an articulated rear engine the prototype doesn't have,. It scaled down from 1/48 to 1/67 scale.

just learn to do it yourself. apply a single drop of lubricating oil on the bearings on either side of the motor. the outside one is easy to spot but here's the inside one.
even though the hornby 0-6-0 chassis locos are marketed and sold as toys they really do benefit from the same maintenance and care as bigger/more expensive locos, doing this always keeps my two ones running smooth as fuck

what kind of problem? I'm using peco n scale setrack and recently discovered that length of the straights on their crossovers are slightly shorter than the standard straights, which really fucks up trying to get the track spacing correct on corners elsewhere on the layout because they don't make a piece that can offset this difference. The only solutions I see would be to slightly loosen track joins everywhere else to make up the missing length, or cut a piece of flex track to just a few millimetres to fill the gap, both of which seem like janky garbage.

10 or so years ago I found a stack of vintage live steam magazines at free magazine exchange bin outside the library. Really wished I had scanned them I wasn’t really interested in trains at the time so just flipped through them then returned them to the bin. Lots of cool projects though and some impressive home machining

Do you guys know of cheap train sets that are compatible with the tracks of this train set I have?

I have had it since I was a kid, and now I'm going to gift it to my nephew who loves trains.
But I've always wanted to see it running on a bigger track, so I guess now it's my chance to buy another set and make one big track putting the new and the old ones together. I know I can just buy exactly the same set, but I thought it would be cool to have different themed trains

If you're only buying straights and curves 'proper' model rail track is surprisingly cheap, although one thing to watch out for is the size of the wheel flanges on the toy, you'd have to make sure the rails are tall enough to prevent them from bottoming out on the sleepers.

I know nothing about old model trains and am wondering what sort of gauge size and what kind of train this is. I found it in my grandpa's shop/garage. There's no packaging I can find and it's rusted as well. The only text is on the coupler(?) And it says P - 2080 and there's a logo with a tiny uppercase H in it(can't see logo in pic because it's too small). The train is 27 1/2 inches (69 cm), 7 1/2 (19 cm) height and 5 1/2 (15 cm) width in front.

The only citation for that is an old-ass book about American locomotive design specifically (so this should really be in the American section of the article, not the overview)
I would assume that it's talking in terms of tractive effort within a given axle load and/or loading gauge, since Americans went on to build giant articulated behemoths to reach the tractive effort figures needed to deal with freight traffic without double or triple heading all their trains.
With no platforms, tunnels or bridges to worry about fouling, and track that could hold infinite weight, then I'm sure you could probably make a 2-8-0 with the power output of a Bigboy, reality often gets in the way however.

So my gut instinct is telling me you're wanting to upgrade from the basic Hornby mat layout and get into actually detailing up a table layout. First thing you should do is determine how much space you have, and how much of that space you're willing to commit to a train table. Once you've gone and decide how big you want your table to be, do some research on how train tables are assembled. If you're doing a simple 4'x8' table there's a ton of resources and guides on what size wood cuts you'd need for that.

Now that you've gotten your table set up, get to track planning. Figure out what types of trains you want to run (The early 50s when Steam and Diesel ran side by side? More modern electrics? Whatever the fuck you feel like?), what kind of work they'd be doing (Do you want more passenger operations or freight? Do you want a more operation-focused layout or do you just want to watch trains go around in circles?), and the style of the layout (Is it a flat land or more vertical with hills and elevations? Is it a single track main or a double track main?) Figure out all of these out first before you jump into laying out any track.

With a track plan in mind, now its time to go and start building. Use extruded foamboard (You can get this in various sizes/widths at places like Home Depot) as your surface since it's easy to sculpt/cut, then place the foam roadbed over that to lay out where your track will go. Once you have all your track laid out and have tested the wiring and switches so that they're all working properly, you can start gluing down the track and ballasting it.

How big of a layout do you want to build? if you have the room, you'll want to make custom benchwork for it. Benchwork can be as simple as a framework with a sheet of plywood or particle board on it, or as elaborate as pic related. Since you're running Hornby OO, you'll want to use some sort of roadbed to deaden the noise. I the US, traditional roadbed is cork and can be bought in rolls.

The biggest limiting factor of the 2-8-0 is the fact that you have a driving axle under the firebox. It's the limitation of all x-x-0 steam locomotives. If you want tall drivers for speed, you have to make the firebox narrow. But then you have trouble keeping steam up. If you want a wide firebox, the drivers have to be small enough to fit under it. In the 20th Century most railroads that fielded Consolations chose the second option. The saying was, "Consolidation: Moving impressive loads at unimpressive speeds." I believe they were one of the most common steam engine types after 1900 in the US. The Southern Railway had more Connies than any other type in three classes. They served the same role that road switchers like the EMD GP series would serve in the diesel era. Connies could be found doing yard duty, hauling drag freight, and doing both freight and passenger duties on branch lines all over the Southern system. The 2-8-2 Mikado supplanted the Connies as the premiere freight engine, then the Superpower types like the 2-8-4 Berkshire and 4-8-4 Northern eclipsed the Mikados in the mid 1920's. Connies never went away, though, and there were always more of them than the newer types because of their versatility. Southern 630 has the same firebox area as her stablemate, Southern 4501, a 2-8-2 Mikado. By necessity, she has smaller drivers to fit under the firebox.

And here's the reworked plan I've got. I cut the middle yard in place of an industrial park and a passing siding for a station with a small city above it. As for that branchline I've currently got some kind of industry spur there (maybe a factory that serves the town?) in its place. I could reasonably do the branch line up to the northeastern most corner if it weren't for the support beam in the corner of the room blocking any progress there.

Just tried switching the original incandescent front& rear light with an LED in a DCC loco and neither works. Both use the blue + wire from the 8pin board attached to the “flag” leg of the LED and yellow/white for the other leg. Ideas to diagnose what’s wrong? Sound and movement work OK.

I'm trying to build my collection of Bachmann HO Thomas stuff. I have most all the main engines from the first three seasons but since I don't have plans for a layout right now I'm trying to focus on building up my rolling stock collection.

What sites will I get the best deals on? I bought Toad and a salt wagon from Model Train Stuff but I'm a little dissatisfied with the stock at the places I've found. Bachmann itself is a no-go since everything is full price.

We had the Wooden Railway line in the 90s combined with all the ERTL stuff (TOMY later) which meant that the Thomas displays at the toy store were massive.
I also think that the idyllic English countryside aesthetic of Thomas is much more pleasing than the urban/western look of American railways. I'm originally from the NYC suburbs and felt absolutely nothing traveling on the Metro-North because the trains are grey and soulless.

I got a small HEPA air cleaner made by Medify air because my last house had a wood stove for heat so the indoor air quality was pretty poor. Just thinking getter one for a train room would probably be a good idea to keep dust out of the air. The little MA-18 model is nearly silent when it's running. Got a bigger MA-40 for upstairs and it's louder.

HEPA fans don't do shit.

I have three. One in my bedroom and two in my office and they will not provide any noticeable difference in keeping down dust.
One is right next to a bookcase and even that does shit compared to other bookcases that aren't next to a purifier.

Air purifiers are only good if you have allergies... or have bad air quality, i guess. Don't waste your money unless you have either of these.

ps, i grew up next to a giant park, that i went to almost daily. I had a dog. Went biking in the trails around my neighborhood. My parents backyard was large and built trenches to play war with my brother. I made giant holes for underground bases for my toys.
Then puberty hit and i started to develop allergies. So you can do everything scientists and doctors tell you to do and your body will still betray you.

Vacuums are great for sucking in whatever is DIRECTLY adjacent to it, but absolutely shit at 99% of the rest of the room.

Go turn on a vacuum right now and note that the hose will only suck in shit that's like within 4 or 5 inches of its nozzle. Further out and it doesn't do shit.
Same with an air purifier and it isn't suck in air at 200mph. They're not magical appliances and while they do help in cleaning the air, the majority of the dust in a room is sitll pushed around and will settle on the ground/shelves/whatever.

I've changed roadnumbers before (See the two RS-3s in this pic). What you need besides some replacement decals are some Mr. Hobby Mark Softer & Mark Setter (Or Microset/Microsol depending on what's available at your hobby store), some scotch tape, and a pencil with an eraser at the end.
>Tape the surrounding areas that you don't want to be removed
>Apply a small dab of the Mark Softer onto the number(s) you want gone
>gently rub at it with the eraser until that number starts to come off
>repeat if necessary until the entire number is gone
>Apply your new number decal and use the mark setter to secure it in place.

Recently got myself a few of these cute little railcars. Four Liliput passenger cars type Langenschwalbach and a fitting Trix baggage car, also type Langenschwalbach. Another passenger car is currently on its way to me.

It does seem like Sam has become increasingly jaded as he's gone along. He used to be more appreciative of older model trains and stuff like that, but now he seems a bit more, well, picky in regards to things like detail and whatnot. To be fair, though, he still cuts cheaper models some slack in those regards, but it does feel like he's gotten a bit more, well, picky.

I have a four year old who is outgrowing wooden rail. I would like to buy him an O gauge. I can't afford a Lionel. Is there some sort of knock off brand that I can get from ALI. I can come up with ancient transformers and such.

Model trains are solely the domain of boomers who are old enough to remember when there was any train culture in the US.

For the overwhelming majority of people, there is zero connection to trains in their day to day life. We don’t travel by them, they aren’t in film or other media, and the only train rides most people take are shitty subways.

Until there is that culture significance of trains again, there is zero chance of there being a new generation that is passionate enough to support the industry.

Trains are not unique in this either. Look at stuff like collectible art glass or pottery. Everybody’s grandma has a bunch of that shit but the next generations have zero interest in that shit.

UK operating condition were different.
Coal traffic (the majority of UK rail freight) stagnated and was still transported in 4 wheel 12/13t wagons which only had a manual brake into the 60s and 70s.
If the collieries had decided to upgrade their loading facilities and BR went to bogie hoppers/tipplers for coal traffic, big 2-8-2s and 2-10-0s would become far more common.

Its a dying scale, as a early 20s adult, getting into the scale due to my local garden railway Club it's very upsetting seeing the fact that my second main scale next to basically normal standard gauge N scale is dying at actually a very astonishing rate. Another one of our club members bit the dust just recently sad to see him go.
It seems that the scale will be demoted to primarily kitbashed stuff from other G equipment ranging being built from raw materials or 3D printed.
