Why is lego more popular than gundam kits? It really bothers me because gundam is better but less expensive.

If intrest was the issue, bandai would just push out a wave of star wars model kits, and throw them in the lego aisle. They already have original triology molds.

Gundam is a niche like Bionicle, and doesn't have the same mass appeal like mainstream lego.

If you mean scale models, they're certainly almost as popular here in the west. As he correctly pointed out >>8881981 >>8882058
people have different interests, not every one is into giant robots. Gunpla is targetting a different niche.
However I can tell you gunpla will never be as popular as lego purely because model kits are never going to be as easy for little shits as a humble lego brick.

There's also no real play value for kids in Gunpla. You build it and put it on a shelf. Legos can be taken apart and build something else again and again and again.

like you buy a treehouse lego set and you can build a spaceship with it
with gunpla you can mix and match their parts but you'll always end up with a mecha

Im on the hunt for the effects pieces but every time i go to buy a kit from shop, the shop clerk either knows absolutely nothing about whats in the box or is a complete and utter snob shitting all over my choice for whats basically non gundam fodder.

I can throw a rock and find 10 people who know lego, have lego to give away for free and get excited when i pull out lego regardless of age

i collect gunpla because i like giant robots but honestly that's a pretty niche interest. gunpla will never have as much utility as lego, they're not really comparable beyond you have to build both of them. gunpla isnt built around a universal system that allows customization without heavy modification. even highgrades that share the same polly caps arnt interchangeable becuse of bandais incostist plastic colours. the hg revive guncanon and rx 78 have different whites for their heads.

thats pretty interesting, would not expect these to be in a big box store like target. I wonder what kids passing by think of these for the first time and parents reactions when their kids want one but the box has a bunch of moonrunes on them, and says on the box 'this is not a toy'

As other people said, they're completely different lines marketed at completely different groups of people. You're basically asking why people buy Diecast 1/24 scale cars when model cars are cheaper. I like both lines, but they're not comparable in any way other than "You put it together yourself"

If only that were true.... chink manufacturing is insanely cheap compared to model kits, the really expensive ones are 1/18.

Lego is more toyetic. It lends itself to being a better toy overall as kids can just build whatever they want. I love model kits, but they're pretty linear until you get into modding them.

Aside from the fact that with legos you can build whatever you want as long as you have pieces while in Gundam model kits you can only get giant robots there also the issue that if you put a Model kit in the hands of a kid it will explode in a few minutes with permanent damage while the legos might explode as well but can be easily reassembled.

I had the perfect example in my house the lego stuff is still intact while most of the model kits are in pieces from when my brother was a kid.
