More and more frequently corporate "pranks" on April's Fools are used as a testbed to safely gauge public reactions to potentially risky products or ideas. If the reactions are negative they can laugh it off and pretend it was only just a April's Fools prank, if they're positive they proceed with the production which wins them extra brownie points for "listening to the popular demand". I can't think of many toys (though I'm sure there were plenty) like that but Pokémon Go started as an April's Fool's test.
