Sadly it was a local comic shop that started this Funko variant shit. It's not one that I frequented often, but it was one of the biggest shops in the area.

I think Funko never really expected, or thought about the longevity of the line. They started off as generic Might Muggs type figures, and Funko probably thought they'd run for a couple years, make some money and move on. But now that they've exploded and everyone is buying them they've started trying to be more detailed (more sculpting, my dynamic poses) the eyes and rounded square head shape is just a hindrance.

I hate the head/face design myself on a technical level, but Funko does that to circumvent likeness rights of actual people which can be a real costly bitch to deal with. Funko just pays for licensing and can get away with generic-looking beady-eyed faces since none look anywhere close enough to the actual celebrities. Is it lazy? Yes, but it makes them more money than if they did faces of real-life people.

The Solar Opposites and DEVO ones don't actually look that bad because they deviate from Funko's one-note design aesthetic. The Masters of the Universe ones aren't terrible either. The rest are sad wastes of PVC.
