On the 2023 rights talk, even ToyGuru says it’s a mess and he’s confused by the rights. What will happen in 2023 is either they will license out a new deal, or who owns what is so confusing they will sue each other and fight it out in court. Basically they each own part and if they don’t work together they can cause each other a lot of trouble as the contracts aren’t as clear as they could be and have become more confusing over the years as different companies acquired different parts.

Basically Mattel can do anything based off the mini comics and figures, but anything based on the Filmation or 2003 series, or new series needs a license. And many of the super7 and Mattel figures have been at least semi based on Filmation.

Even the experts are not sure but one way or another we will find out how big a mess the licensing is in two years.

Is it not possible that ToyGuru totally misunderstood the Filmation deal and thought Filmation owned the rights to ALL MOTU when it was just their DESIGNS for it? I mean, the guy is still pretty young. When 200x was rolling he was still in college.

I've always wondered where "concept figures" fall in this continuum.
For example: Octavia. She appeared only in the Filmation show...but only because she was a character sketch Mattel created with the intention of putting her in the toyline. Could Mattel make Octavia (providing the toy took design cues from the concept and not the cartoon) without licensing?
And to go a step further, Strongarm was the working concept for what would become Fisto, but afaik, no concept sketch was done. Now, since the cartoon models and toys rarely matched, could they dream up a new design for Strongarm and include him without licensing?
And what about NEW characters, for thst matter. Can they make Draego-man or Wrap Trap if they like, or create new OCs?
(I'm bringing this up purely in theory, I'm aware that Mattel probably wouldn't put in that kind of effort for c-list characters.)

I don't think they are in this version. From the first press announcement we know He Man has in his team Man at Arms, Gwildor, Robotoman, Extendar, etc. All tech based guys so I guess the villains are all magical. This is probably to differentiate it from the Revelation show. Or they are in but their tech parts are out.

I like short girls with huge tits so yeah definite bias towards Entrapta. I'll also agree and say that Scorpia's design was an improvement as well. I think muscle women are generally a fun trope in sword and sorcery that we weirdly just don't see in MOTU that often, so I'll take what I can get.

The biggest travesty of the design is thst, if the alternate head was cropped from the picture, you would never know who it is.
If you can't immediately tell who a character is, its a shit redesign.
I would forgive the covering up if 1) it still looked like lyn and 2) the clothes was ornate the way Lyn normally dresses, instead of being completely featureless

Agreed It;s far too fucking plain. It doesn't even have any of her design features from either the classic series or 200x. It's a plain blue robe and pants. No Purple no ornamentation. Th only Evil-Lyn thing about her is the alternate head.

Of course she should ignore the prudishness of the design which is an all new level. You get the feeling it's meant to hide her curves and the idea that bare legs are taboo feels like something out of the 19th century.

Seriously, her 200x costume was the perfect update. Why not use that. Are we really back in the victorian era with standards of women's dress?

The only way I'd be OK with the Revelations outfit is under certain contexts of her being retired (which could explain the plainess as she keeping a low profile) and she later switches to a traditional design when she gets back in action. But I don't think that's what is going on.

I freely admit that I'm a total MotU poser. I don't know anything about the old cartoon or the comics, I just like the aesthetic and characters. So I only buy what I like. So far I just have Man-e-faces, Roboto, and Trapjaw, because I love beefy toys with cool gimmicks. Digging this line so far.

Plus, all the MCX stuff.

Even allowing for bad art style, I genuinely don't think most of the designs are good.
Shadow Weaver and Scorpia are good...I don't hate Hordak, even though I strongly prefer his traditional design, and I don't have anything bad to say about Mermista. Entrapta I still think look boring. And Castaspella gets a pass too. But everyone else is shit

I would consider Catra, but only if there are zero Filmation design elements
Also, if Shadow Weaver counts as PoP even though she never had a toy, I'd get her, since she's a must have for the Horde

But overall, I do not want PoP gluting this line. If you want to include them, do a separate PoP Origins line and sell it with the Barbies

Mermista was really well done. The original lacked a personality and was just another /fit/ white woman in a line where that was everyone except Bow and Netossa. Making her brown while keeping her attractive and giving her the defrosting ice princess (ironic, when Frosta exists) characterization was a big improvement.

Actually I would because She Ra is suppose to be scifi barbarian babes focused. If it was all genederfipped with males I'd be quite pissed. Believe me, they tried when the first couple of MOTUG generals started rolling circa the dawn of origins. I believe they lasted just 3 or 4 threads before giving up entirely. Keep in mind that was even with crossboarder backup from /co/. Nu-Ra is a gangrenous limb that's long been amputated. Yet like Ash's zombified hand, it continues to come crawling back.

Between Sagitar and POWER GAP, you could comfortably slide in Flipshot, Flogg, Slush Head, Mara, and maybe even Crita and Quakke. NA may have been a shit show in terms of plot, and the toyline might have been a failure, but there are a few jems in there.

I didn't say Revelations was going to doa good job. But they're marketting it as a follow up to Filmation, and it has the usual cast, Teela, Orko, etc.
Compare with CGI which is going hog wild with the cast (Roboto, Extendar and Gwildor) and is gonna go off in a weird direction.

Personally, I'm leaning towards the CGI show because Origins is giving me my vintage fix adequately and Revelations sounds dreadful.

There's one more thing: after the mini-comic "The Cosmic Key" (in which He-Man meets Gwildor and an Evil Cloud brings Blade and Saurod to Skeletor for the first time), he wanders into an Eternian town and starts causing trouble. Teela responds and it's revealed that he's from a planet called Merrian and has been to Eternia before, meeting Teela before she was Captain of the Guard. Later we get to see said planet when he, Saurod and Beast Man take a magic gate there and He-Man, Gwildor, Man-At-Arms, and Evil-Lyn disguised as a female Thenurian follow in Eternia's first starship.
Oh, apparently there was also a "bad future" storyline in Marvel MotU #12-13 where he's one of King Skeletor's Generals with the other 1987 Evil Warriors (minus Scare Glow, poor guy) and Evil-Lyn.

I doubt it that's an obstacle, they're doing a Fortnite comic with Batman vs Snake Eyes.

I think the real obstacle is MOTU and TMNT both aren't owned by DC, they were licensing MOTU and TMNT is from Viacom. Thundercats crossover and Injustice crossover was easy to do because WB had rights to the Thundercats and DC characters.

There's more than 72 issues total. There's also Masters of the Universe Adventures which originally printed extra-long new stories before becoming a reprint title.

As for an omnibus, the real reason is that there's probably rights issues with Egmont.

Yes. Before the 1985 Battle Bones, Filmation drew an evil variant of the Sky Sled, the detachable front of the 1982 Battle Ram, but no toy with the evil parts was released until very recently for both Origins and Mega Construx (unless Classics did it first).

Maybe they were looking into doing the giants, but making huge ass figures of very obscure characters didn't seem sustainable for a mass market product so they made a compromise by making them big but not THAT big rather than having to skip them entirely.

A topic I was discussing the other day, and I'd like to hear your opinions:
The topic was on Origins including things like concept figures and Classics OCs
The two sides of tge argument were that "no, they wouldn't be included because the general public only wants characters they know, stuff like concept figures appeal only to hard-core fans."
The other side (my stance) is that certain characters under thst umbrella would innately have mass market appeal regardless (for example, i think even a casual might be interested in buying Wrap Trap because he's a cool mummy man. Mummies are not exactly niche. Same goes for a dragon man like Draego-man)

So what do you think? Are there cases where concept figures and non-vintage ocs could be included, or do you think thst they actually are too niche for public consumption and can only be released through collector lines?

By the same logic, anyone interested in He-Man characters at all would have to be He-Man fans. Aside from He-Man and Skeletor, how many characters do we think the average person could name? If they were to release a Draego-Man, for all casual shopper 1 knows, he was an original character, maybe a one-off just like many of the old characters. So yes, anything goes makes perfect sense. Original characters, random characters from old artwork that were never made, etc. Just look at the WWE line, I'm betting some MOTU only people have no idea who these wrestlers are, especially some of the newer ones, yet some of them probably still bought the figures because they were interesting designs.

Ya, for the most part the accessories in this line are directly from Classics, with some exceptions like the recent wave 5 Macho Man and now Slaughter with the Origins mace, where previously wave 2 Macho Man had the Classics mace and Classics armor. If the accessories are from neither, then they're made specifically for this line, like Sting's, Balor's, Stephanie's, JYD's in this wave, and a fair few others.

He-Man and Skeletor of course. She-Ra and Hordak. The Sorceress, Man-At-Arms and Orko were in most Filmation episodes. And the Evil Warriors who had the most cartoon appearances have already been done.
I think the only way Draego-Man or Wrap Trap coming out before a lot of vintage characters would matter to the general public is if lots of Millennials remember the cast of the 200X cartoon, and even then they could come out before the likes of Rio Blast and Dragstor without issue.

The more characters the better is my stance. But like others are saying, for the general public there really isn’t a huge difference from a Stinkor and a Photog, people really only know He-Man and Skeletor

Why though? Diversity points aside, she has arguably the lamest gimmick of any character, MotU or PoP, and her costume is one of the tackiest.
I know ill catch flack for this, but I'd honestly take blackwashing an actually good character or just making an OC before I'd take Netossa.

I think including OCs and concept figures would actually strengthen the line if anything. Hell you'd likely get some attention from casuals and kids by doing it. Same goes for Tytus and Megator, as aside from appealing to the diehard fanbase who have lusted after megator and tytus since their discovery, you'd be showcasing that the sky's truly the limit when it comes to MOTU. I figure the more gimmicks and themes you cover in the line, the more new blood you'll pull in.

Honestly when you look at the MOTUO Deluxes, they could have easily put Jake as a deluxe with all his gimmicks, but they didn't. I'd be surprised if WWE has any deluxes.

MOTUO Deluxes have all so far had working functions, like the clamp, Ram Man's legs, the battle armor, on top of an extra head, hand(s), accessories. So while Jake had a lot of built-in gimmicks, there was no mechanical function involved. And if this continues to hold true then it's more than likely the Hordak from the leaks will be Buzzsaw.

Andre, being bigger and loaded with new parts, would definitely seem like a higher priced item, but all the better if he isn't.

OK, fair on the tacky costume. She's overdesigned where I was just remembering her headdress being a non-tacky Richard Wagner by way of Jack Kirby thing and the rest the standard Eternian women's wear of leotard, bracers and knee boots.
I wouldn't say "wears a weapon as a cape" is the lamest gimmick in all of MotU and PoP, though. Many characters had only the twist-waist punch that Mattel has wholly forgotten.

I will give you that one in theory, but a net is (imo) a really weak ass weapon to have. Her shtick is just "throw a net on people". I dunno, to me, I can't think of one that I think is lamer.
Now, if the cape was a cool weapon, then "wears weapon as cape " might be awesome.

I can definitely see more modern women getting in the line before the men, like Lynch in wave 5. I bet we see more of the Rock n Wrestling crew if they keep with the wrestlers of years past.

They need to get a fat dude body in there so we can get the bigger dudes like Earthquake, Tugboat, Kamala, Albano, Bundy and the rest.

Now I'm imagining an OC who wears a jagged-hemmed steel cloak and there's a mechanism somewhere on the figure that makes it flip up 90 degrees into individual swords.

It would also fit a lot better with characters like Foley, who I think they said they steered away from picking Foley for Man-E-Faces due to the body not looking right. Roman got a unique body, so a bigger more stout body that would fit multiple characters is a much better investment than that one was.

It would be good to get some more modern characters as well, maybe even something like a 'Dream Matches' 2-pack or something, with wrestlers of today vs wrestling legends. But for now we're stuck with the waves of 4, and we've moved from 2 modern and 2 legends, to 1 modern and 3 legends, to 4 legends, which is cool, but also cuts out a lot of suitable modern wrestlers from getting a shot.

Long story short, the line needs to expand to more than just 1 SKU and the occasional ring.

In a perfect world. As is I guess we take what we get and be happy that Walmart keeps ordering more. You'd think if the line was doing as well as it is (7 waves in just over a year is pretty damn impressive) that Walmart would keep their exclusive stocked sufficiently.
