Megatron= RED version (can't transform but has th best, most accurate G1 Robot mode) plus either the gun from the Core Class Megatron or the one from the Centurian battle pack for his gun mode

Soundwave: The original G1 version is still the best and has great articulation. Pick up a vintage G1 one version or if you have the money, the old San Diego Comic Con box set which has G1 Soundwave and classic cassette versions of Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Ravage, and Ratbat

Starscream/Skywarp/Thundercracker: if you want Deluxe size, the Classic/Generation versions. If you are OK with larger scale versions, the Earthrise ones (just prepare to pay out the ass for Thunderwing and Skywarp).

Rumble/Frenzy: Titans Return tablet versions; just be warned that the blue one (Frenzy) can only be obtained in a box set which came out around the time of Power of the Primes/Bumblebee movie that reissued Titans Soundwave.

Shockwave: Siege of Cybertron version

As you can tell I actually really like the Netflix Megatron, the battle damage is really well done and befitting to the character.

Megatron refusing an earthmode out of pride has been a thing for a while now so the "hover tank" doesn't bother me

Weird you wouldn't reccomend the Netflix Soundeave or the Siege.
The G1 Soundwave is still great, true, but it'll stand out like a sore thumb among the other figures you listed.

If you want a streamline G1 cast you just need the following:

Optimus, Bumblebee, Ironhide, Ratchet, Jazz, Prowl, and Wheeljack.

None of the other S1 mini-bots have any personality save Bumblebee. Tracks and Bluestreak are also cipher, while Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Hound, and Mirage are "cool designs but bland characters".

Pretty much this, but for Megatron your best bet is one of the various repaints of the Siege mold. Specifically the default one, the 35th anniversary cell-shaded one, the recent Netflix one, or the upcoming Netflix one that comes with Skellivore and the Matrix, but it sounds like you probably won't care enough about those to pay extra.

I assume nobody has considered this yet or there's more pins holding his torso together or something preventing it.

No I swapping the left arm for the right arm entirely. The problem is that the arms need to be inverted to sit properly, but that causes the pin to be exposed. This should be fixable by just swapping the right for the left and the left for the right.

I havent yet opened my netflix soundwave but it doesnt have any damage and it "converts" into a tape deck. While soundwave doesnt hit sore thumb levels it does look rather unique mixed with newer toys. Blaster just looks big and awesome mixed with anyone.

It's a worse shellformer than even the lowest of the low of BW2 and BW Neo. People have been selling 3d printed parts to just display both modes completely independent of eachother. Robot mode loses nothing from removing the planet mode parts and the only thing planet mode needs is the outer ring and something to clip the shell onto.

At least in my opinion.
Of course you don't really have much of an option now unless you want to pay $1000+ for Haslab Unicron.

Botcon's The Bard of Darkmount

A very ostentatious thing. Not many sparkling gold half tracks rolling around.
He's very well removed from the look of his evil counterpart, but I suppose that's the point of Shattered Glass.

As far as this weird made up vehicle goes it works very well. No trouble rolling and as you can see the turret ahs a full range of motion.

Not sure how much I agree with using bright green to accent gold but Botcon is gonna do whatever it is they do. Did.

The reason /tfg/ is a requirement is because having Transformers or TF in the filter gets you the 3rd party general as well, so if you don't give a fuck about 3rd party figures then /tfg/ is your only way of finding this one.

I've always been fond of this Straxus mold. Even if it is damn near impossible to transform with popping the the track halves off.

The added black balances out the green a lot better than before.
One thing that doesn't look good? The paint on his insignia is misapplied. You can make it out in the picture. So that's bugging the shit out of me.

So I don't know if anyone noticed, but this toy is crazy posable. Ankles, wrists, waist, neck, opening fingers even. All at a deluxe size.
A second thing I'm not in love with are those stupid little bracket in front of his thighs there. They don't do really anything in any mode and least of all in robot mode. I'm not going to clip a gun there ever.

Cell looks better, better materials, better paint, and cleverer engineering. Unfortunately it’s also more fragile and an absolute nightmare to transform. I wouldn’t mind a reduced-scale version to pair with a Legends collection, being smaller would make it easier to handle, I think.

I feel like even if they did, the charm would be lost. Like a lot of old GI Joes that Hasbro updated, something really doesn't translate--they attempt to slim it down or make it sleeker or normalize the proportions or some such other bullshit, and it ends up looking way worse than the original.

I'm not even a diehard Geewunner or anything, I just really like the way his wide-ass helmet looks, with the cool visor and mouthplate juxtaposed with the goofy bug eyes on the sides, and those giant ribbed sections on the sides making him look like some sort of Pharoah Soundwave. Or his kinda bulbous gut. Or the perfect cartoony halloween pumpkin color scheme. I just feel like Hasbro wouldn't do it that way in 2021.

I have the regular version of this guy. Those brackets on his knees are actually handles for his turret mode, you pull them up and rotate them 90 degrees so someone else can aim him. It doesn't really improve it, but most half transformed third modes aren't very good.

They literally had to make the bottom hinge of the knees tighter, at least tighter than the top hinge

Something something "fixing your own toys", but I'm glad that the legs are screwed together, the slightest tightening of that joint with super glue or floor polish is usually enough to do it

I think Siege Megatron is much closer to definitive than the Earthrise Seekers. ER Seekers miss the mark by a lot for me. I'm hanging onto my Siege versions with their superior robot modes until Hasbro does better.

Typically blaster and soundwave don't make good retools of each other
Mainly because blasters speaker placement and soundwaves arm transformation.
Especially if you're wanting a studio series, he's gonna have to be engineered from scratch, otherwise he won't look like in either mode.

Agreed DESU. The ER Seeker mold has a really nice jet mode but the robot mode is aggressively mediocre due to being an upscaled 2006 figure. Had it come out 8 years ago I'd be impressed, but given that the Siege one has an infinitely superior robot mode and an honestly pretty cool tetrajet mode, the ER figure falls kinda flat. Heck, as far as earth mode Seekers go, the NewAge version BTFOs the ER mold at a fraction of the size and a lower parts count. A Voyager upscale of that figure would legit be the perfect CHUG Seeker.

Personally I enjoy both but while the Siege mold has superior articulation IMO the ER one has it beat in sculpt and altmode. This was one case in which I didn't mind double dipping between Siege and Earthrise.Plus it was somewhat easier to get the main trio in ER and they look great together.

Yeah it'd be one thing to get blown out by the upcoming Masterpiece, but there's no excuse for ER being so much worse than that.

How? The torso is a box which makes the head look too small in comparison. The crotch flap is leagues worse than the Siege hip/crotch assembly. The arms are stubby. The fins on the legs don't look great. The biggest plus is the lack of battle damage, but that can be removed from the Siege if it bothers you. The main draw, the jet mode, is even lacking with the underside looking bad. I had no intention of buying Siege Seekers for anyone other than the Rainmakers, but after seeing how the ER mold turned out I quickly grabbed that trio to serve as placeholders. At least when the inevitable good earth mode mold is made the Siege versions won't be completely obsolete since they'll have a unique alt mode. The only issue is if you missed out on Skywarp direct from Amazon you're gonna take it up the ass.

I think the current line of generations figures needs a phrase to express using similar design elements or even duplicate transformation steps from other figures that aren't from the same mold. We throw around "MP Lite" sometimes, but that doesn't work well with figures that are similar tonon-MPs but other past ones like WFC Chromia and the Orthia limb bots. Something that gets across the idea of a figure looking like a retool but not actually being one.

I think something like "Shared Engineering" would be a good starting point. Maybe find some synonyms to shorten it or make it catchier.

Sunstreaker and Wheel,ack are a better example. They both have front legs that flip around with a portion of the roof and windscreen that makes up the chest, their arms make up the rear bumper and back tire wells but in inverted directions, and they also have almost 100% identical dimensions on their chests for head placement in altmode. Despite all of that, not a single visible part of them is identical, so it can't be a retool as it's not on the same sprue like head swaps or even T30 Springer/Sandstorm would be. It also doesn't even rule out the Runabout/Runamuck comparison either. It's a weird situation.

I don't. I got SS Roadbuster and Leadfoot, but skipped topspin because of his nasty janky rubber all over, and I have no desire to get any version of him to complete the set.

Then again, it's not the same with movie characters since they are really hard to get attached to in the same way as characters from other TF continuites, so I don't think it's too fair a comparison.

What gets me is that they all seem to get completely unique tooling, which can get expensive when you need to mass produce thousands of these figures and you can't reuse any of the injection molds. I actually fucking hated ER Megatron because of how overall lazy it was but liked many of the pieces more so I hacked my Siege and ER figures up and Frankensteined them together for a Siege alt mode with ER bot parts. I'm a lot happier with the result than I was with either figure individually.

I'd rather not waste three deluxe slots on them again this soon. Like, the Prime Wars versions aren't nearly as good as some of the WFC stuff, but I'd much rather see characters we haven't had in a while or that have had absolutely garbage figures in the past.

Though if they do them as Core figures that would be acceptable, since they would be Cliffjumper-sized deluxes anyway and there's not that much in the way of accessories to pack with them to make up for it.

There are loads of random characters I want toys of who I doubt will ever get made. If you read the comics (both idw and the old marvel comics) there are so many characters who are super important story-wise, but who have never received an official release. Pic related is a random example. Others include Nova Prime from idw, the DJD, Emirate Xaaron, Guardian (the model of Autobot drone that frequently appears in both marvel and idw comics)... there are loads really.

I'm in a similar situation as you (late to the party), and I'd say yes.
If you really have to pay retail, look into reviews and such to make sure it's actually worth it. I impulse bought Siege Springer for retail, and I regret it since both of his swords got bent trying to take them out of the packaging and it's kinda nervewracking to try and transform him (I'm probably just really worried about hamhanding it and smashing it).
If you're REALLY unlucky, the thing(s) you want are gonna be more than retail. For me, I'd love to get Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime, but he's ~$70 and a retool of Ultra Magnus, so he's both overpriced and not really worth it imo (just feels like they squished a commander-size character into leader-size).

I've heard some people having trouble with that part.

Aside from the wings being misassembled and one of her shins not being as tight as I'd like, my copy feels way more solid than blackarachnia.

I just popped the wings off and back on correctly. Pic related. Left is wrong right is correct. No stress marks or breakages

That Apeface art might actually help the siege mold's jet not look like a flying brick. It just needs some wider canards on the false cockpit and tapered intakes on front of his gorilla arms. Has anyone tried making an addon kit for that, otherwise I think I'll pick up some styrene this week and try shaping some pieces.

Did you get a full kit with gap fillers and such, or just knees? I 3d printed mine and he just looks so good with them. Only problem I've had is that the ankle rockers are tighter than the knee rockers so the shins want to stay vertical when putting him in an A stance

This is the closest I have, but it's mostly some pics of the parts themselves that got swapped, not the process of the swap itself. I had to so some shaving to the Siege backpack panels to get them to fit properly with the ER armature and chest. I also had to carve out a track on ER Megs's crotch piece so it could be slid into a position where the legs would still be level in alt mode. Actually worked out really well since I left a few small bumps along that track to allow it to lock in both alt and bot mode. Overall, it was a pretty straightforward process of swapping the parts around, but the tricky part was figuring out what needed to be carved/shaved down so things would actually fit. Getting the pins out was a bitch and a half though.

my issue with them is how bland they look trying to be cartoon accurate while at the same time avoiding it, if they want to be cartoon accurate then be and don't add G1 toy details.

That's funny cause those two were the ones I like the most outsides Hun-Grrr. Sinnertwin has his yellow chest instead of that green dildo and Cutthroat doesn't have the purple on the bird head. Both changes I love.

I agree that I they had gone full blown cartoon accurate like the Takara UW sets did instead of doing some kind of merger of the two decos.

Good designs, awful production values. Munky seems to have two camps where some of the figures are fine and great while others are stiff and shit. Megs has the same issue with his rubber panels, on some copies they work, on others they don't. The other beasties all suffer from similar QC lotteries and/or the plastic doesn't feel up to much play.

I’ve been thinking about it and I think the Galvatron mold would look better with an expressive headsculpt, a manic grin or a screaming head would make the “brute” proportions more palatable.

Transformers Armada Sideswipe and Nightbeat

Fate finally deemed it necessary to talk about these guys.

What can I even say that hasn't been said a million times?
The vehicle mode is nice. Just a nice little blue sedan.
Three auto-badges and the word Transformers across the windshield don't help with the "in disguise" part but whatever.

Nightbeat looks good too. A bit on the small side for Spike but at least he's the second motorbike so far that someone can ride.

Is it a ramming thing? Is it to go faster? Who knows.
What I can tell you about it is that NIghtbeat isn't involved at all. It's a spring loaded action gimmick completely divorced from any minicon interaction.

What Nightbeat can do however is flip around and hide away inside Sideswipe for some minicon storage that only Tidal Wave really replicates.

Man, both these nerds are aggressively uncool.
Just look. Sideswipes tiny torso and gigantic limbs. The way his shoulders are specifically molded to be as useless as possible. This neutral pose is as far out as they go and his skeletal hips are in the way so he can't rest his arms closer to his body either.
No waist, no knees, borderline vestigial elbows.
The cherry on top is his face. The shades and muted expression come across as so unbelievably try-hard to me.

Even if he didn't as bad as he does, Sideswipe still has a problem being made of large pieces of clear plastic. The clip on his gun is cracked apart so the knife can't dream of connecting to it. And the peg holes on his flanks are cracked so they barely stay in place in vehicle mode too.

How Nightbeat got it just as bad baffles me. Like, there are some bad minicons out there.
Highwire is bad, but at least he has the excuse of being a pedal bike and needing to combine.
Someone was posses by a Gobot's ghost when they made this toy.

The final final straw is Sideswipe has possibly the lamest minicon power in the line. Plug Nightbeat on his back to unlock Arm Raising Action™
Not even a spring load punch. Which would make sense considering hat those huge chunks of car on his arms already do.

This whole thing is just a carnival of failure.

We need a new team of Dinobots to support the original 5. Pulling both from other characters and some OCs I saw on Deviantart:

Scorn- Spinosaurus. G1 version of AoE silhouette (with back flags and whip/flail)
Slash- Velicoraptor. Just Slash.
Scalp- Pachycephalosaur. Maybe make dino head detachable in robot mode to become ball and chain.
Slam- Ankylosaur

Not sure who the fifth member should be. Maybe a Hadrosaur/Iguanodon? What’d they be called?

The only name I can see working is Surge, since the other names aren’t brutal enough for a Dinobot.

Though the nautical names made me come up with something:

Swab- Cannonball’s first mate. Turns into an Ichthyosaur (those fish/dolphin sea reptiles) who’s beast mode snout/face turns into one of the legs, giving him a peg leg.
