It was literally the newest Sonic game out at the time
Personally I'm glad, Yuji Uekawa's art style on Adventure was really distinct and it's nice to have a small amount of merchandise based on his less 'safe' period

Because the 3D models weren't polished enough to seem like it was the intended look, thats why. I mean should they made it low-poly too?

That Sonic was my jam for years, next to the peanut butter that was Wendy's Mario. but the former didnt age well because of my distaste of permanent side eyes.

I wanted that Sonic so bad, as a kid. I almost had the chance at a Walgreens in Orlando. To this day, this is the only Sonic figure with Soap shoes. I'm hoping that Jakks does a Soap shoes variant of their snowboard Sonic figure.

Considering a company like Hasbro, that OWNS the Power rangers license, still has to google reference materials, I can't imagine it was any better for 90s toy designers. At best they got some jpegs and promo materials, all much lower resolution than what we get these days they definitely weren't going to take a promo model and add joints to it. these figures were still being hand sculpted.

i think the artists intent was sonics signature posing is of him curled into a ball when jumping/dashing. So he was infusing that look of creating a circular motion as he poses

From what I heard, Uekawa's art for Sonic Adventure was inspired by skateboard graphics. He also did the 2D art for Sonic 3D Blast, which had a very Adventure-esque feel to it.

That would be SUCH an easy variant for them too, the model for the soap shoe exists in Sonic Forces as one of the Avatar costume elements, even an amateur like me with a 3D printer can make a pair and fit them onto that figure's legs. I even used TINKERCAD to make the board from City Escape. Seriously I'm just some idiot with a 3D printer, why won't the decades old multinational toy company who has already re-released the figure TWICE not just swap out the shoes!?

3D Blast's 2D art was done by Satoshi Okano, and the Adventure art style wouldn't have been the same without his influence. It's a shame Uekawa gets all the credit for it. https://www.fanbyte.com/features/sonic-hedgehog-satoshi-okano/
