Does anyone remember the I spy books? I'm just remembering now how many of them were just a bunch of masterful toy photography.

Those are my two favorites as well. I feel like spooky night was the pinnacle of the series and possibly of Walter Wick's work as a whole. They absolutely outdid themselves.

i wish i properly remembered which book i had, but i think it had this one. I never actually spied for anything, honestly. but i too mostly enjoyed the constructed worlds of creation, while imagining what if people lived in those worlds

I'm pretty sure it's from I Spy School Days one of the very first.
I also always had more fun just looking at the pictures. These books inspired me to play with my toys in more imaginative ways.

The faint warm lighting from that lamp give this a nice vibe. It really looks the part, even if the usage of niche collectibles and fairly modern nick nacks set it apart from a real I Spy page.
Also, the riddles are supposed to rhyme; Nothing really rhymed besides pig under a bridge.
I hope to see more from I Spy: /toy/ Extravaganza, please make more!

I had spooky night as a kid, and the dentist office I went to had most of the classics in the waiting room. Only recently am I realizing how much I appreciated them.

My fourth grade class had several of these. Didn't do any spying though, just looked at the pictures and never really recalled which ones were from what book. My favorite though was this space station one that included salt and pepper shakers with multi colored fluid in them.

Remember seeing this as a kid thinking about how neat the artist managed to get all those cars all lined up on the ramps like that. Being older I can't help but appreciate how the picture seems to inspire this retro-esque portrayl of a big city rush hour at sunset. Only now realizing how his use of light helps exaggerate the size of everything.

The book I liked looking at the most as a kid was Treasure Hunt. I liked exploring the expansive seaside town.

I had the good fortune of coming across a completed dollhouse model of the same make as the mansion from that book. Can immediately appreciate they spent the extra bit to upgrade the windows.

the manipulation of light is incredible in these books. For that city shot he explains on his instagram how he 'painted with light' in a dark room while the camera's shutter was open.

Super jealous about the dollhouse, how much did that run you?

I've been having a lot of fun throwing these together in an evening. I want to try something a bit more large-scale and elaborate next

I can only hope to have grasp at pulling off that level of technique someday.

Dollhouse ran me at $125, with a cleanly executed finished interior and definitely was fully electrified at some point but the wiring would need some repair. Feel like I got a good deal, considering realgoodtoys quotes a 'completed' dollhouse with a bare interior at $1600

When I was in fourth grade art class we had this recurring thing where the teacher would allow us to free build with blocks and tracks like those. I always, always tried to create little pseudo-cityscapes like these.

Damn. We couldn't sell off my aunt's dollhouse for even thirty five bucks at the end of the estate sale. I didn't have room for it. My cousin ended up taking it down to New Jersey for her sister in law's granddaughter when she's older.
I did end up keeping a few boxes of furniture I found in the basement for myself. The dollhouse was fully furnished and had an attic full of extras anyway.
