You'll get there with practice. Maybe with experience as well, though idunno about that; my life has been pretty uneventful.
I think what's most important is your characters, followed by the internal logic of your setting. I focused a lot on the first back when Beast Machines priced me out of transformers for a while and I turned to those quality KOs of transforming digimon for most of my new figures.
