>>8980007A long time ago, their competitors used to have a to of toys with the games, overtime, they nixed the toys section because they realized games had a better profit margin, and lower shelf space, so they could cut collectibles down and out to maximize game sales. They did this around 08-ish or whenever advent children came out as the play arts were the last things they sold.
Overtime those profits got too thin to maintain, and games started going digital more and more, so there was less incentive to buy there. So they brought back the collectibles, the gamestop back where I used to live was carrying everything from american statues, anime tiddy statues, 3A figures, SHF, and bandai, to hasbro. They were doing anything to sell toys to gamers not realizing they alienated that group from their store years ago, and they were now competing with comic shops with similar pricing. So in the end you had game shops becoming the same kind of niche shop comics are, but without the purchasing base because the people who used to buy toys from them just buy online cheaper now, or go to their LCS.
tl;dr they cut out some of the adequate money makers in pursuit of complete greed and swapped out long term longevity for short term major gains that didn't last long because of rapid expansion.
