Also Akira only looks like Ryu until he starts hitting you with his ass, and you don't get many characters like Vanessa in other fighting games.

And yeah, personal tastes aside, the characters are famously bland looking, barely being anything more than representations of their fighting styles.
The series had a niche hardcore following especially in Japan, but it was behind Tekken and Soulcalibur in popularity. The first games did very well because of the novelty, and then VF4 faired well against the unpopular Tekken4, but eventually the next Tekkens steamrolled VF, arcades declined and Sega stopped the series at 5.
