why is this line $200 each? they’re like slightly bigger funky pops but ten times the cost. no extra hands, heads, effect pieces, barely any articulation, no accessories

In the 1960s and 70s, a company called Bullmark made soft vinyl (sofubi) kaiju toys. Kids loved them.

In the 1990s hard plastic took over. But all the kids who felt nostalgic for sofubi toys started to make their own as DIY artists.

Companies like Bandai cashed in on the nostalgia and started making nostalgic mass market toys again for stuff like new Godzilla movies. Eventually in the 2010s companies started cashing in on the art market, too, mass manufacturing art vinyls for the same price of indies making small batches. A lot of the big indies started scaling up and licensing out work, so now the line between indie/corporate art vinyls is blurred.

All of that was simplified but that’s how you have Bandai releasing $200 licensed art vinyls in the 2020s.

So lets assume these cost 20$ to make. Only 10% sell. They are marked down to 100, and idiots say "wow what a great deal" and buy them. Lets say they go on super clearance to 50, and thats where most sales come from.

It's just fake class shit. People figured out that others will buy less for more if you convince them that there's some kind of intrinsic prestige to it. They're not rare. They're not impressive. They aren't mechanically complex. But they do cost a lot, and people in the know, know they cost a lot. And so if you buy them you know that you are a person who buys things that cost a lot.

But it's not like some new rich guy who buys a bunch of painting buy an artist he once heard of, these don't register as being worth anything to someone who isn't in the know. Their collection of 500 dollar faux-bootleg he man figures will eventually wind up where they belong, in an opshop or the trash once they've passed enough hands and becomes separated from the mystique of the original pricetag.

Once you make a standard sofubi $40 or more, you’re intending to sell over 90% of them to adult collectors. That’s all I meant. I appreciate the correction on the price though, I didn’t know bbts would mark something up that severely.

Realistically these aren't even what I think most people would consider "real" sofubi, since they're not made by independent artists or have things like roulette draws for unique colourways and the like. That being said you can absolutely have that plus an existing IP. Kinnikuman sofubi are basically the same tier as unique sculpted shit despite being based on a manga. Like seeing stuff like that makes it actually hard not to see these DB ones as something adjacent to funkos. Very high quality, but still ultimately made to appeal to people who remember a thing but aren't into the culture enough to want something actually good. Like they're still nice but arguing they have the same value as these types of sofubi is kind of disingenuous.

Oh yeah, I agree. I mostly buy the handmade shit in lotteries (which is why I didn't know the price of these, I don't buy them). I'm a hipster dipshit. But companies have definitely been latching onto the label to get in on that audience for a while. By my asshole purist definitions these Dragon Ball "sofubi" are more like Funkos, although I'd concede their designs, sculpts, and paint jobs are more interesting if someone made that argument. Anyway, I agree with all that.

Manda has various colourways of these Spiceseed figs for between $40 and $400, just depends on who's printing or designing them, and the lottery stuff you literally had to be there and win them in Akiba at a shoe store or something. Yeah buying sofubi can get out of hand fast, especially if you go for sets. My personal rule to myself is that I don't buy anything old unless I'm obsessed with it, I can't just "kind of" like it. Otherwise I stick to new stuff and preorders, which is not as bad. Also I try really hard not to buy variants, as cool as those displays with ten colorways of the same design are.
