I'll start off with a one-picture story. I had to reduce the image quality in order to post them, apologies in advance.

>The summer's afternoon sun provided no shade for the Tan convoy. Having not fully considered the effects the stiff grass would have on wheeled vehicles, the lead Jeep rolled over on its side after an ill-advised shift in gear. As the Jeep's occupants were tended to, several soldiers dismounted from the other vehicles, laying the foundation for panic in what would have been a simple escort through an unoccupied human household's backyard.

While one soldier carefully aimed the lethal artillery, another took aim with her M-14, prepared to pick off any Tan stragglers after the guns would start firing. Had the Tan forces navigated through the flowers and bushes lining the vast yard's fence, they could have circumvented the risk of travelling out in the daytime in an open field. Alas, a misguided assumption claimed another military venture, not one that would be remembered in the annals of human history, but in the ever-expanding legacy of the small wars constantly waged in plain sight.

The way I see it, most of the cooler-looking accessories you get with army men are in cheaper playsets. While most of my army men are the American-made Tim Mee and BMC types, I was able to snag a cool set of sandbags, tents, oil drums, and ammunition crates from a generic brand playset at Wal-Mart. I suppose you just have to know what you're looking for.

Vehicles are definitely a good investment. I personally advise all army men enthusiasts to have at the very least a set of tanks. You can branch off into jeeps, trucks, helicopters, and other such things from there.

As for your picture, I would guess that they are all from a dollar store, but the figures themselves are good-looking to me. A big part of that is in how the figures are posed. While Tim Mee is the go-to brand for high-quality army men, the uniqueness of their poses are rather limited. Here's a picture of some of my BMC soldiers (four on the left) and vintage Louis Marx Company (eight on the right) men. In addition to straight-up combat poses, they can march, melee fight, charge, and carry wounded soldiers (the one on the end). When was the last time you saw a plastic army man just walking around with their rifle slung on their shoulder? So when you're getting army men, I recommend getting Tim Mee soldiers for a default set of battle poses, and then go to other sets (including dollar store ones, if the quality looks good enough) for more experimental poses.

Engaging with plastic army men as a hobby is really a giant spectrum. What you want to do with it really depends on what you are personally into. For me personally, I like to play with them just as straight-up toys in my own fictional universe, pose them for photography (like the pictures you saw earlier), and collect them as an extension of my figure collecting hobby. The time period of the soldiers are really varied, too. The standard Tim Mee army men are tangentially based on Vietnam War-era U.S. military aesthetics, while other brands like BMC are predominantly focused on World War II, and more collector-oriented brands like Armies In Plastic do more Napoleonic-style historical sets. Whatever you decide to do, the hobby is really fun, and I can recommend some figure sets and vehicles for you to get started as well.

Couple of related questions:

Growing up I was definitely the Andy type, particularly by including dinosaurs and insects (don't have many of either anymore but there's a certain parasaurolophus who still retains his honorary title of "The General"). Never really did much era mixing outside of WW2 battling Vietnam/modern soldiers, my knights, cowboys and indians would still participate in great wars but they typically fought their counterparts in side battles. After seeing Wizards for the first time I was converted to mixing them all up, heh.

Sorry for the fuzzy pic, it's 11 years old and was still learning the basics of photography.

I advise you to pick up a set of 100 soldiers and a set of tanks and jeeps for each color (Green vs. Tan is the go-to). If you're feeling more experimental, Tim Mee also sells armored cars, trucks, helicopters, planes, and even an AC-130 gunship, all in multiple colors!

BMC Toys is under the same umbrella as Tim Mee, and they also sell high quality plastic army men. In addition to World War II stuff, they also sell collector's sets relating to the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. They have also released a line of "plastic army women" the first sets of combat-oriented female toys soldiers of its kind to ever exist. When I was a kid, I preferred to play with my army men by the parameters of the 3DO Army Men series. I even picked out all the soldiers I'd use as Sergeant Hawk, General Plastro, Colonel Grimm, and the Bravo Company Commandos. As I got older, I opted to experiment more with my army men. I have used Gundam models as powered armor units in the Green and Tan armies, for instance.

Looks like Diamond Select made an official Aliens brand set of Xenomoprhs vs. Colonial Marines. They're pretty hard to come by, though. A quick search on eBay for "aliens versus colonial marines army men" should do the trick, just be ready to scroll down. Other army men sets of general sci-fi stuff are also available, too.

I play using wargame rules. Most historical sets will work, though I like sets like www.plasticcommand.com and the others linked in the OP that were designed specifically for army men.

The Army Men PC games made my army men world more racist. Before those came out my troops were generally divided by uniform and era, and as long as those matched, the colors didn’t matter. After those games came out the Tans in my world gradually became more and more evil, and now troops are divided by era but also by color, so that modern US army men of different colors will almost always be enemies (or at least from different nations), even if they have the exact same uniform and equipment.
Those games also inspired me to write some army men fanfiction: fanfiction.net/s/495970/1/

That's interesting, my approach to the whole "Green vs. Tan" dichotomy went in more of an opposite direction as I grew up. As a young boy, the Greens were always the good guys and the Tans were the bad guys, entirely because of the 3DO Army Men games I used to play all the time. It wasn't until I started watching the "Plastic Apocalypse" stop-motion films on YouTube when I started to appreciate some of the more interesting dramatic aspects of soldiers of all factions going through the motions while fighting, and I have since taken a more Ken Burns-esque approach to simply depicting the armies as being composed of average people put into an extraordinary situation. I liked the fan-fiction you linked, by the way. Really solid stuff.

The thing about The Corps guys is the mobile infantry helmets. The colonial marines had the steel pot helmets. But the Corps guys have more futuristic weapons. I am considering using the corps dudes and doing head swaps. I am only going to need a dozen or so anyway.

Interesting. Do you not have a side you “root for” then? I’ve definitely added more shades of gray to my wars as I’ve gotten older, but I still have a generally “good guys” side (or sides if they have allies).

I still have a small degree of favoritism for the Greens, but I see that as an opportunity for a more complex exploration of certain characters. For instance, I have a "Sarge" in my fictional universe who serves as the de facto main character of my stories, but I want to see if I can treat him and his squad more as "protagonists" rather than as "heroes."

An example of this would be how in the first "Army Men" game for the PC, the newsreel in the intro claims that the Tan Nation invaded the Green Nation on the grounds of their dictator wanting to "capture and destroy all Green territories and claim them for his own." The PlayStation remake of the game, "Army Men 3D," amends that line to the Tan Commander "inciting the people with his twisted vision of world domination." Based on my desired approach to complexity and nuance, perhaps the Tan Nation saw fit to invade the Green Nation because the latter provoked them first. It could have just been a failure of diplomacy, or perhaps to a more extreme extent, a series of Green attempts to subvert the Tan social or political system. The Tans, tired of the Green's antics beneath their veneer of being a "peaceful" people, launches a military expedition to eliminate the threat to their sovereignty once and for all. This is just an example, and of course both sides are complicit in the use of force to get their way (hence the term "plastic army men"). But I think there is room to explore a more complex history as to why both nations saw fit to engage each other in war.

Generally speaking not really, most army men vehicles, bases and stuff don't even scale well with themselves, typically at 1/48 to 1/72 while the average plastic soldier is 1/32-1/35. That Bradley in pic is a MicroMachines playset; it's also been copied and packaged with army men though they're not easy to come by now.

On a related note the brand Soldier Force which mostly does cheaper action figure stuff but also army men has put out some large vehicles that would probably work well with Mega figs. They've done a Bradley and Abrams that I know of, got one of the former from a garage sale many years ago. Soldier Force is sold at TRU here, not sure but the same or similar stuff is probably available elsewhere, possibly under other brands. Interesting detail on that Bradley, it has the same three-barreled gun that rotates out the back of the turret, a straight copy of that classic MicroMachines set.

Finally got my resin 3d printer (Elegoo Mars 2) to make my own army men. Pic related is my first attempt at 54mm to go with my Star Wars Command figs (I still need to print a base). I think it came out pretty good and, other than the sculpt being bulkier, matches up nicely to the SWC figures and to an Airfix German paratrooper clone.

Haven't posted in a while. Glad to see the thread taking care of itself in the meantime. Here's another picture story to keep our plastic army rolling along.

>Weeks had passed since the Green Company's exit from the backyard. In the intervening time between the Company's departure and return to the chaparral suburbs, both Sarge and Jane were front and center to hear the formal announcement of more Green Army fortifications and reinforcements to be posted in the region. Sarge and Jane's Green Company was to be the first detachment of soldiers to occupy the new base, after which new orders were to be issued. The base was to be set somewhere in the area with little human occupation and the "strategic advantages of elevation, concealment, and natural fortification." The two sergeants, both now with more battlefield experience, kept watch over the surrounding suburbs as they awaited transport to the new base.

Awesome, very nice figs and scenes. Makes me think of the Antietam scenes in the full cut of Gods and Generals, specifically the fight in the cornfield. Movie was too much pro-Confederacy bollocks/revisionism, lacked good pacing and the theatrical cut left out Antietam entirely but the battle scenes were pretty good, and Jeff Daniels returning as Chamberlain was epic; the full cut is definitely worth a watch.

Gods and Generals had a lot of potential, but I think the filmmakers may have indulged the Lost Cause myth a bit too much when writing the Confederate characters. Jeff Daniels and Stephen Lang were both great to watch, and the battle scenes and strategic realism were very well done, but I just wish the writing was a bit better. The battle scenes should have been much more graphic, especially Antietam now that you mention it. I think only Glory, Lincoln, and the Grant miniseries on the History Channel actually showed moderate blood and violence in the battle scenes, which you'd expect from such a brutal war.

The lack of graphic scenes isn't so bad given the movie is meant to be a prequel to Gettysburg, standing on the merits of its characters and their personal stories rather than the physical violence of the battle. G&G just failed to deliver on that end and as a consequence we'll never get the final part of that trilogy, The Last Full Measure. Maybe some grit could've made up for those failings but I doubt it, especially when they felt that cutting Antietam entirely was necessary to make the theatrical version.

We're drifting a bit off-topic I guess but I'd hate to see what kind of blackwashed pandering we'll get whenever the next Civil War-era film is made; Midway was a rare unmarred historical epic in this day and age but it feels like they'd never let a Civil War one through without some meddling.

It definitely is unfortunate that the Shaara trilogy was left unfinished. The three original books were solid reads (despite some occasional Lost Cause talking points in G&G), and the Gettysburg movie is an excellent watch. It's also a shame that there likely won't be another movie like Glory that depicts the U.S. Colored Troops with historical accuracy, nuance, and respect, all without falling into politicized pandering. Historical biopics are one of my favorite genres of film, and I'm always eager to see somebody take a swing at it. Hits and misses a plenty, I suppose.

Yeah, can't say a bad thing about Glory, though I'm sure there's something "offensive" in it to today's culture police jackasses. Historical movies are my favorite as well, keep hoping there will be a rebound of those but at the same time fearful of the inevitable political correctness/revisionism that would shoehorned in. Greyhound was a decent recent one, cringy U-boot taunts and Americentric story aside.

The best type of green army men on the market is hands down the Tim Mee Plastic Army Men. The sculpt is the best quality available on the market, it's American-made, you get a good variety of poses, and you get 100 soldiers in total (split as 50 for two different colors). They're more expensive than other cheaper alternatives, but this is the gold standard of classic plastic army men. You can get them on Amazon, Tim Mee's website, or BMC's website (BMC also makes really nice army men).

Timmee isn't just the gold standard, they're literally the ORIGINAL plastic army men company. 90% of all knockoff army men, are literally straight up copies of their molds, just cheaply molded off of the real toys and made out of inferior plastic.

You are going to find a high mark up from a lot of sellers, maybe try ebay. You can try the actual factory sight, but that shipping is like twice the price of the toys themselves.

They also have a variety of vehicles that go with the men. But, it is a small factory, so they rotate which molds are being printed once in a while, usually on a yearly or bi yearly basis, so keep and eye out for the following:

Recon patrol, 2 armored scout vehicles, one green, one tan.

Jeeps, 2 classic jeeps with 2 artillary trailers, tan or green per package.

Patton tanks. The iconic tank associated with army men, 3 in a package, either green or tan.

Cargo trucks. The classic military cargo truck with canvas top. 2 in a package, 1 green, 1 tan.

Walker Bulldog, a giant tank with rolling wheels, and space to store 12 soldiers inside, available in green or tan.

C-130 gunship. Also known as Hercules. Available in cargo or gunship variants. Includes 1 patton tank, and 12 men.

The dominator, a massive tank.

I made the classic RE1 zombie and Hunk from RE2 in a sort of deformed style based on the characters in Metal Slug. I also had army men in mind with them, especially Hunk.

good news, the chinese have been making cheap knockoffs of it for years, so if you look around various knockoff army men sets, you'll probably find a pretty close replica. I think it was originally a micro machines toy, that the chinks just made cheap copies off of the original toy.

There used to be an online toy store years ago that sold em, is how I got the green ones in pic here >>9029617 but they're long gone; the others were from a mom-and-pop dollar store that closed down just as many years ago. Had that MicroMachines set as a kid but broke it; last year found one on ebay for a good price and my life is a little more complete again, heh.

They're ok, but they're really soft and rubbery, and tend to melt if you stand them in a window or something.

Also, they're blatantly ripping off the original Timmee Toys poses, which, in my opinion, buy a bag of 100 Timmee men or Timmee bucket-o-soldiers for like 15$, the quality of the plastic, and the detail in their sculpts are much better than the disney ones, since the disney ones have fake mold marks molded onto the men looking like giant obnoxious pimples or something.

The original Bucket-o-Soldiers from the first movie had Timmee army men (pretty sure at least some of the troops in pic related are from my original bucket), guess they went with more distinct poses for the re-release. Tbf that set has a couple of more identifiable Sarge poses and overall is a closer match to the movie soldiers.

All timmee men are still made in the same little family run factory that they have always been made in, and I for one love to support them when I can, because they refuse to be bullied or sellouts to mega corporations.

This is also really nice. Great atmosphere. Feels real. Only thing I would change would be the position of the tank (moving it leftward), so it's silhouette doesn't overlap with the silhouette of the bazooka man, who seems to be the main character of the shot. I had some Cavalry stuff as a kid that was somewhat sectional. Like the heads, hats and I think torsos as well.
The bases were also seperate and I think the guns (and war bonnets) were as well. The horses they came on was a weird plastic that if you scratched it you could peel off a layer of it's "skin" like a bad sunburn.

Timmee's army men are indeed well-made, have great poses and are iconic (having been cloned/copied or inspired other army men through the years like in pic), but that's all they make in terms of actual soldiers and get pretty boring. Marx, BMC, Armies in Plastic, Matchbox, Airfix, Hing Fat/Billy V are just some of the many other big names in army men out there worth checking out.

Here‘s what I have:

Elegoo Mars 2 resin printer
Cheap plastic tablecloths/covers for the table you plan to use
Nitrile gloves (medium duty)
99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to clean the prints (I actually use 90% since Walgreens doesn't carry 99%, and it's fine. Others get away with 70% plus a longer cleaning time.)
Safety glasses
N95 masks or a respirator with filters
Lots of paper towels
Microfiber cloths to cut up and clean the vat with if you have a failed print
Tin foil roasting trays or cafeteria trays (1 wide for printer to sit in and catch any spills, 2 deep ones for used tools/as a workspace for removing print supports)
2 pickle jar containers with inner basket to clean and agitate print in IPA
2 clear tupperware tubs, 1 for cleaning, 1 for curing (if planning to cure outside)
Paint strainers/filters (the Mars 2 came with these)
Metal scraper to remove prints from printing bed and flush cutters/clippers to remove supports (the Mars 2 came with both of these)
Silicone spatula to clean vat
Old toothbrush for cleaning prints
Big funnel for getting resin back into bottle and IPA back into bottles
A bottle of 3D printing "photopolymer" resin, obviously (I use Elegoo ABS-like gray)

Because I live in a sunny place and cure my prints outside in the sun I didn't opt to buy cheap UV lamps or a nail drying station, but for folks in the UK or other cloudy locales it might make sense to get one of those as well.

I should note the need for a few of the above items can be obviated if you buy one of the branded wash and cure stations put out by the 3D printer manufacturers themselves. I opted to save the cash and do it myself, and my setup including $200 printer was about $300 all told.

I got them from TRU a couple years ago, unfortunately they were clearing them out at the time and don't seem to carry them anymore. It's possible they could be on Amazon or elsewhere but could take some digging, haven't seen them yet after a quick initial search.

Already had piles of those black and silver knights but the siege weapons and equipment alone was worth it to me. Always disliked how that particular set of knights didn't have any archers or crossbowmen, or horsemen for that matter.

The Timmee and BMC reissues really do provide a great variety. Tanks, boats, rotor & fixed wing, wheeled vehicles and artillery in all kinds of colors.

One of your best bets for finding cool stuff is Ebay. Just be sure to wash it it soap and water first. Also check local dollar stores. Sometimes they have cool things as well.

I always wanted blue and grey plastic soldiers as a kid because of Sarges Heroes (and basically every Army Men game). I think it's so cool that blue and grey are basically standard colors for all the modern reissues now. I wonder if the demand for blue and grey was spawned by people who played the Army Men games, or if it's just coincidence.

I know the gray and blue tank and truck re-issues were a result of people who played the Army Men games requesting them of the owner of BMC/Timmee (Jeff Immel). The Plastic Apocalypse group on Facebook in particular was pretty active around it.

Thanks! The Star Wars Command figs are there for scale; you can see the rebel fleet trooper is a bit smaller than 54mm, though the upscaled pathfinders are more heroic vs. true scale so their proportions are naturally chunkier.

Seriously though, going through this thread brought back memories of Army Men, the ships, tanks, jeeps, helicopters, and jets. I haven't seen many newer versions or models. Can I ask how is the coloring done now? Also I'd love to see different countries soldiers. Obviously the USA, then Japan, England, Germany, Russia, maybe newer "enemies" like Afghanistan. I saw the links for Amazon, that's my next place to go. Also the pictures you all did are incredible! Awesome set ups, and great layouts!

These are among the more recent ones. For historical armies you'll probably want to check out Armies in Plastic, they even go into the modern age with Taliban and the like - just be prepared to spend a lot, heh. Glad you're enjoying the thread, it's nearing the end but we'll keep the torch burning.

I have been away and not posting on /toy/, I actually now have enough paratroopers to do a mass green drop. Also red, tan, blue. But my toys are at home, in another country... so I won't be able to record that video until January haha
