>>9047232We are a fairly captive market and have been for a while. We get X-plus, MMS, SHMA, the HD Gashapon figures, and a few other things, but none of those are really in competition with each other. Even when we had NECA making Godzilla figures, they barely qualified as competition for SHMA, because a.) they only shelled out the money for licensing Godzilla and the KOTM Kaiju. b.) in most cases they were so massively outclassed by SHMA that it was obvious that if you were a collector you were gonna be buying the SHMA figure. c.) NECA aren't that cheap outside of North America so if you are an Australian or Japanese collector and you are going to be paying pretty similar prices for a NECA and an SHMA then the obvious choice is going to be the SHMA.
With no competition, consumers don't really get to decide where they are going to be putting their money if they want kaiju. They have to go with the established options and more or less be content with it or miss out. The Mezco stuff, the Super7 forking over the money to license all the Godzilla kaiju, and the recent rise in third-party 3D printed figures gives me some hope that it might be changing.
