Trying to get my hands on a Jaller and Gukko and the set seems to have just doubled in price. I remember being in various bidding wars for around £25 per listing about a year ago and the cheapest one I can find now is £50. Even parting out just Jaller on Bricklink is expensive.

The fact that this fandom still puts so much effort into getting Lego to acknowledge their existence is honestly pathetic.

There is even a chunk of bronies thay don’t even watch the show and are just in the fandom, because the brony fandom is a self-sustaining subculture independent of official Hasbro media.

What does the Bionicle fandom have? A Minecraft server and a handful of half-finished comics and game mods, and they can’t go a day without begging Lego to “pwease bring our elemental robots back”.

Pony fandom started back in the early 10s, back then there were a lot of people in their mid 10s and early 20s getting interest into it and the Internet was pretty much in a comfortable but limited transition between the Wild World Web and the dystopic conglomerated internet we have today where you have a handful of strong websites to get exposure plus somewhat prominent small ones dedicated to your niche. Is it really? There have been Bionicle cosplays with far more effort than "get a wig, get coloured outfit,EVA foam wings and a cutiemark and you are Rainbow Dash" type of cosplay. Of course I am talking about the high effort and actually decent or good looking ones.
Sure these casual cosplay gals dressing as the mane 6 have fun and I'll respect that but don't come up at me with the effort argument because if effort alone is the measurement of worth then the average MLP cosplay is worthless.Meanwhile to make a good Bionicle cosplay you need to put on a lot of effort and resources. There is a reason why you don't see thousands of Iron Men at a same convention unless it's some big international ones and if you add that the small size of the fanbase you can guess why we only got like two good cosplays plus others that might have passed the radar.

I like this one quite a bit and the articulation is impressive, but I think yannik's toa head is much better. Having a fake Tahu made from system isn't really all that appealing when I already have the real one. The toa head is just generally very aesthetically pleasing and I think non-bionicle fans could dig it as well. All they'd see is a cool easter island robot head.

They're both pretty cool, and way better than the dumb fucking great spirit robot which would be way too expensive and doesn't even look that good. I would be happy to buy either of them without much hesitation, unlike that awful diorama, but I would actually love to have the toa head. How the fuck did that diorama end up being THE set to represent bionicle anyway? It's not very visually appealing and the scenes it displays are shit only bionicle lorefags would even understand. It had zero appeal to anyone who hasn't spent the last 20 years obsessing over bionicle, and even then most bionicle fans don't think it looks good either.

Mata Nui is a generic robot design, I can't see an average Lego fag shilling out money for it. Star Wars can get away with selling boring grey shapes as spaceships because it's a famous brand, but no one but hardcore fans have any idea of who or what a Great Spirit Robot is. People would just think it's a blockier Iron Giant ripoff. If you take away its significance to this niche fanbase, there is almost nothing eye-catching or appealing about it.
Why do so many of these Ideas projects insist on adapting very specific G1 scenes or characters that have no meaning to an average person? Why not make a more appealing and visually imaginative model that takes inspiration from Bionicle's imagery or story concept without copying it directly? Something that even non-fans might be interested in, something that has immediate appeal and doesn't require you to read a wiki page to understand it. The diorama wasn't just boringly built, it targeted a very small crowd of hardcore fans. The brand is in such a bad spot right now that you can't count on Bionicle's familiarity as a selling point. I know fans would like something that's 100% Bionicle, a character or scene that they personally recognize as part of G1 lore, but that just isn't a realistic wish.
This Mata Nui model is the same shit. Only fans would care about it. But put a GSR-like mech in a natural setting, market it as an archaeological scene where a bunch of explorers discover a mysterious ancient alien robot, design some play features, and you have something regular buyers and Bonk fags alike might find interesting. This is just a quick idea, you could easily come up with something infinitely better, but a set like this could potentially be well received if it targets more than just a specific fan group. This is one reason that Castle set got funded so fast, it has wider appeal, you can be a fan of practically any medieval fantasy franchise or just castles in general and you'd find something to like about it.

The characters would still be modular, but by being smaller, they could make proper sets of story scenes and environments, the figures would be leagues more affordable, AND it would open the floodgates for cheap mask/parts packs full of dozens of recolors.

I finally decided to fork out the funds to pick up a Muaka and Kane Ra set from ebay. Complete aside from the elastic bands which I sourced elsewhere. Sure, I get this biting function is cool, and again the heads look very nice. But the forelimbs that just 'fall out' as the play feature? The silly, floppy tiny treads for hind legs. I feel the Tarakarva do the concept so much better, and the Rama and Jaga look more like what's they're supposed to be.

Yes. The set was a straight carryover from the old Boneheads of Voodoo Island concept that was much crazier than what Bionicle ended up being, with dismemberment as one of the main play functions. Both them and the Tarakava were first conceptualized as strange machine beast things for kids to bash at each other, and any further design choices were secondary at best. The Muaka and Kane-Ra were never meant to be a tiger and a bull, they just stuck a couple extra pieces on the preexisting models to give them some vague animal motifs and called it a day.

The Tarakarva were great too. The drop down jaw and punching was well designed. These sets were great if you had someone to play with. Anways you should try putting together the combo model at some point. Its like an upgraded version of the individuals and fixes some of the issues like the floppy treads.

I think the majority of the rest of bionicle, specifically barring stars and the QC issues of 06 to 2011, all had better sets. This includes 2015 and 2016; I think the reboot Mata are, as a whole, better than the original wave.

It's mail day today, I think I got a fairly good deal on 17 pounds of bonks for 80 burgers.

Pretty disappointed about the Jetrax because that's the only 08 vehicle I'm missing, but some of the other stuff was a nice surprise.

The spear mold was last used in 2010 before the reboot. They could have kept it for five years (note how it was the only Rahkshi spear tip they brought back), same with the Vorox/Skrall armor that was used in 2012 in Hero Factory, 3 years prior to the reboot. So yeah, the probably still had those lying around.

This was supposed to become a bumblebee, but I had to rush the build, so I failed the proportions.
It's the largest creation I did in a long while, but with using Mata torsos and a few larger Technic parts and frames I managed to build a sturdy base to then coat with parts for shaping. It's too heavy to actually stand on its legs, so instead it rests on three axles sticking out at the bottom.
I'm hoping to construct better wings soon.

Get it trough your thick skulls that you can't have a bionicle revival trough ideas, you might get fancy tombstone or one figure or so but nothing more. If you got to keep a single one of your bionicle sets and the rest disappeared forever who would you keep? Assume you can never rebuy any of them and the one you keep is all you'll ever have.

Having trouble trying to not make it look like he's in a diaper. Metrutoran chest plate almost works but it gets in the way of the head articulation.
Anything wider and it'd effect the arms.
I wanted to pull a Pohatu with the Metru Torso and I really wish it didn't look as dumb because I love the concept. I also like how the mask with the brain looks.

Uniter piece would fit there kinda perfectly, though, right side up doesn't cover the head y-joint much, and upside down it possibly just emphasizes the drop shape of the torso. Dunno if stud.io has that piece but maybe worth trying anyway.

Thank you. Funny you ask, because I intend to make a video about that topic with this particular build. It will need more time tho, so here are my steps:
I needed some reference so I got that first. Then I had an idea on what I want the legs to look like, so I built a temporary version. That was enough to determine the scale.
Then the actual build started, so I took some Mata torsos, technic frames and other technic parts with lots of connection points and thus created a frame, or skeleton if you will. Next I got my small amount of bright light orange and placed the stripes. After that, I found a place to attach the wings and then filled up with black. The head and butt came last. Head was some trial and error with shaping, the butt was basically filling with silver parts.

Apologies if this has been discussed to death, but what is the most economical way of completing lots of sets? Let's say for example I want all the original Rahi. Is it cheaper to buy them complete on Ebay? Or buy the individual parts from Bricklink? Or maybe buying incomplete sets on Ebay and buying the missing parts from Bricklink?

Parting out sets on Bricklink is usually not very economical since the completed sets usually cost less than the individual parts. Plus you'd be buying from multiple stores so you'd have to pay separate shipping for each order. I'd say that Bricklink would be the "default" price for each set, whereas with Ebay the sets usually end up selling for more but you may occasionally snag a deal.

It's annoying but canon is important for creators. and shit like contests or AskGreg ruins it.
Take this, for example, you want to write about Nidhiki, maybe because you like that character or you like the idea of him, but want to fix his personality and make him less edgy and more believable. But here comes TTV and Greg. Greg's femdom waifu could have been rescued from Makuta but Nidhiki and Krekka? Fuck no. You are now not even to allowed to resurrect them cause some random fag just had to ask Greg about it and Greg for some reason decided that's not an option. Perhaps it was a coin toss decision or perhaps Greg's still pissed about Miramax movies. Who knows?
The point is: with this shit, your story about Nidhiki became non-canon and is basically grouped with shit like tranny Tamaru or faggot Kopaka.

Personally I care about canon up to a certain point because the early mystery was one of the main things that drew me to Bonkle. And then I devoted years to seeing them unfold, so of course I would like to see where the mysteries lead. Following the story, when it was still ongoing, was part of the fun. But I can't support this sheer autistic insistence to "hard canon" that some fans have, especially when most of the fan-inspired canon additions are pointless fluff and Greg has never been shy about his careless attitude of making things up on the spot. At least people like Swinnerton, Faber or Thompson had grander ideas they wanted to see through and planned out in advance. Greg just wrote whatever if he had no one to guide him.
These post-cancellation canon additions are just being dumped on a story that ended long ago, a story that's full of contradictions and plot holes anyway. It's like adding decorations to an already sunken ship. Hell, Greg admitted he only supported the canon contests because he was the only official Lego person still discussing Bionicle. But his word could easily be overruled by other Lego employees. He's not some ultimate authority. He's also said multiple times that he'd like fans to keep Bionicle's spirit going by themselves, comparing them to how Star Trek fans have kept talking about the series after it had ended. I don't think he meant "please keep pestering me with your canon suggestions about stuff I haven't thought about for ten years."
What's interesting is that I listened to one of TTV's streams some time ago, and they expressed similar thoughts. They said it's pointless to define every little lore detail, after some goof in their live chat asked what was wrong about pressuring Greg to fill in every gap. On that occasion, I agreed with TTV. They should have kept the same attitude with these canon contest ideas.
