I've bought a lot of used HO rolling stock and trains from shows and because of this I have a bunch of different couplers (pic related). I've been thinking of converting them all to one type but I don't know which is best. Which do you recommend?

They stopped making them in 2005, and the early productions of these models (the ones made in the Czech Republic) were actually made by ETS (tinplate Czech model train manufacturer). They're also best for inside track and are generally based.

The sheer size of that truck is bothering me. Its width fixes the wheel issue, but now, it's wider than the engines. The height is also weird. It's an open wagon the size of a goods van, maybe bigger. Either way, they need to either scale down the truck's body or scale up the engine bodies. Personally, I'd prefer the latter, but that would probably be too expensive.

i wish they produced it with the normal chimney to make it easier to convert into the real loco, but someone'll probably release a kit that covers that. pretty sure there's a rheneas-to-dolgoch kit that fixes the chimney

Someone mentioned its probably from Life-Like, but i was hoping someone could give me a little more detail on it.

It started out as the "Complete Life-Like Railroad HO Electric System", then they changed the name to "Railroad Empire" around 1980. Life-Like made a whole bunch of different variations of that set up until 1990. It's gonna be difficult to find yours, specifically.

In practice though, I've had more track conductivity issues with Z scale than with steel railed HO scale track that was rusty.

Compound that with the lack of manufacturers producing equipment (Basically only Marklin, AZL, MicroTrains, and Rokuhan) making it very limited in selection, and you get a very niche scale that's really only a novelty.

I was originally going to build a layout in Z scale, but after seeing my starter set engine have issues with conductivity after only a few hours of running time, I've since decided that building it in N scale will be much more worth my time, despite having to settle for a slightly less complex layout.

I remember when my dad bought two giant pieces of plywood for Christmas one year when I was like 8 or 9, and I thought "wtf?"
he then went to his truck and unloaded two giant HO scale train sets and we worked on that until my angsty faggot teenage years.

I kind of want to get back into it as a slow/long term project but I'm thinking N scale. Any personal preferences?

At this point, N scale is very sustainable and has a great amount of detail, sometimes even better than some HO models, lol.

I've been stocking up on crap like Kato Unitrack sets, Kato locos (FEF-3 and a GG1) and a Broadway Limited PRR T1, in terms of rolling stock I'm trying to stay with Kato for passenger cars, and Micro Trains for everything else.

So i decided screw it and starting making a micro layout for shits n giggles. I used cheap foamboard as a base for now and some track i threw together while i wait for Peco Bullhead track and turnouts.

Yes. It's medium grade real coal from Peco TM. I filled three wagons and sent them on their way. It looks excellent. It creates drama both visually from the increased model veracity (it just looks like how it should look, it's really bizarre). But also from the very real consequences at the next derailment. At the moment it's not something to worry about because it keeps shorting out, it's essentially static. When it is running reliably it will be a huge amount of fun. I have also made enquires into the purchase of a new locomotive but this is still an on going controversy.

Does anyone else have a problem with scaletrains lights not working on DC, I bought a DC sd40-2 from them and after a while the lights stopped working. Both the options I suggested can be had for about the same price as that Hornby (in fact the Guagemaster combi is cheaper since Hornby make you buy the AC adapter separately) and no they don't run trains the same at all.
The Bachmann and Guagemaster are variable voltage DC controllers which obviously control speed by what voltage they supply to the track, giving nice smooth operation at all but very slowest speeds.
The Hornby is a PWM controller, which uses pulses of full 12 volts and controls speed by high often it sends those pulses. A well made one smooths out the pulses and can give really realistic slow speed running, the Hornby is not a well made one and the slow speed performance is generally quite shit and jerky from how aggressive the pulsing is. PWM controllers in general also put a lot more stress on motors than normal DC controllers and will burn motors out a lot quicker, the Hornby doubly so because of how cheaply its made.
Obviously do what you want, but if you're investing money in it now and need a controller I don't see the sense in buying the vastly inferior product that will eventually fuck up your locomotives

Thanks. I shall buy a second controller, two right hand points and get a second line running. I want to avoid the usual passenger train outer, mineral train inner layout. It would be fun if a diamond crossing could be used. I'll have to see if they're insulated so two trains (separately powered) can pass. I suppose, really, buy the Hornby layout book.

Are you sure you want to do O84? I just did the math and it's nearly $200 for a full circle. Unless you plan on running purely huge articulated locos like Big Boys you could probably get by with your main radii being O60 and O72. I've got an unlocked copy of SCARM so I can definitely try whipping something up, but I'm not completely sold on O84 yet.

If you can swing it, I'd suggest even splitting your mainline into at least two blocks. That gives you the option of two trains running conventionally on the same line. If you did an operating session with friends, each person gets assigned a block and train control is handed of from one block to the next rather than having each person assigned a single train as you would with DCC.

Okay. On a simple oval of track, you split it into two blocks by using plastic electrical isolating rail joiners. Let's say in this case the oval is split into two even halves. Each half has it's own conventional controler. A train running on it can physically travel around the loop without interruption, but as it Travers it will pass from one block to the next. As long as the direction control and throttle settings for both controllers are the same, the locomotive will transfer between blocks smoothly. A conventional layout can be subdivided into as many blocks as you want. You could break down the simple loop into four blocks if you wanted to. Again the ket is to have the controllers set to nearly the same setting as. The locomotive passes between them. The main difference between this and a DCC layout is that whoever I'd controlling the block is controlling whatever train is in it. You're not so much a locomotive engineer as a switch tower operator. This is how club layouts were set up before DCC came along. One of the advantages to doing this is that there's not much power demand on any individual block section, since there will likely only ever a locomotive and maybe some lighted cars running on it at one time. I meant separately controlled block sections on the same line. Not thst it would be necessary if all you were doing is running a couple of parallel loops and a couple of sidings. Breaking up a mainline would be for a fairly large layout running multiple trains a the mainline simultaneously.

That's the problem. Even in small scales like N for a home layout, most of us are stuck with enough scale real-estate for an amusement park ride. On the one hand, you could build a yard in the space and putter around to your heart's content. But sometimes you just want to watch a big mainline passenger or freight thunder around the track. Terrain features can help break up the monotony, but you still end up with the same train roaring past your town pretty regularly.

Having the bridge work reliably sounds like a nightmare to implement to be honest, unless someone happens to do a ready to go kit for it.
Having an L or U shaped loop seems like it'd make better use of the space you have.

NBR first, third, third and brake coach and Highlander Rambler locomotive in a train! A cohesive whole. The 0-4-0 is at its limit, it's almost laboured, which is realistic. Disasters have occurred from underpowered locomotives being inappropriately used. In this instance there isn't much of a gradient so they should be ok. The next planned development is a B12 locomotive as they ran on the NBR line and they are available.

I use a mix of Humbrol and Reaper mini paints. I started with Humbrol because I model British stuff, but Reaper is cheaper for me since I'm in the US and it works just as good. For Primer I use Tamiya.

The deal is this. I can't get an NBR locomotive to pull my coaches. It's not possible as far as I know, apart from getting into one-off kit building, forget that for a game of soldiers. It's then a LNER locomotive that plausibly would have worked that line which is these three.

OO scale, you have Hornby and Bachmann, the Hornby model is rooted in some ancient tooling from when they bought Lima whereas the Bachmann one is much newer and therefore far far more detailed and also much more expensive.
If you're just displaying it then Bachmann's hit or miss mechanisms won't be an issue for you, just your wallet you'll have to worry about.

IT's because it's a long exposure because it was taken in the dark. It's exaggerating the glow. When you see it with your own eyes it doesn't appear quite like the photograph. Also, if you don't like the lights you can switch them off or by the exact same coach without lights fitted at a discounted price. I think I've seen the Hattons coaches you mean. Are they the Genesis ones?

I was attempting to make conversation, that is all. OO Peco or Hornby. I didn't understand the rest. I think the outer top line (A) needs a right handed point to a right handed diamond crossing on middle line (B). Then annoyingly siding line (C) needs two points as best I can work out. It needs a right handed point from line (B) but then it needs another point to connect the incoming train from line (A). Has it? Not sure.

Ok, I assumed it would be Hornby 00 based on the previous post. Using their track you can build that junction with these pieces. Be sure to get the proper crossing (R615 instead of R614) as the latter won't work right with this setup.

The Irish Railway Models Class A 036 and 054 have sold out so it is no longer possible to buy one with the bright neon orange nose. The white beaded versions are now also limited. Afterwards it's the plain orange and black IR and CIE versions. Which do you prefer? Personally I think the white beading is somewhat over fussy. Does it look better without it? The problem is on the locomotives without the white beading the paint line between the black strip and the body is poor in places. I can't make up my mind.
