So the guy at Super7 said they can't do a hooded head for Cobra Commander in the Ultimates line, as it's not allowed by Hasbro. Retarded as hell for a collector's line but I hope that doesn't stop them from doing a hybrid version like Sigma Six for a future Classified design.

To me this one seems the most harmless because Snake-eyes is just a strong silent type and to be honest growing up it I thought he was always Asian because I grew up with the cartoon and never read the comics.When you look at the controversy over the film most of it is the fact he talks and shows his face most of the time.

All of this is even more comical when you know the original Snake-eyes was just planned as just cost saving filler for the 82 line.

Yeah the second they said it was an origin story with a lead speaking actor in the role, I kinda just wrote it off entirely. Having Snake Eyes talk so much and wearing a helmet that can literally retract its visor to show his eyes is just fundamentally against the point of the character

Almost the same with the comic except Larry Hama kept insisting upon shoving him in every other issue. It completely shits the bed by around issue 50 or so with how much focus is on Snake Eyes and how little focus Larry gave to Hawk despite being such an autist over the character when Duke was introduced, so he kept trying to force Hawk into stories instead, only to consistently sideline Hawk for Snake Eyes at every turn.

This is why Sunbow will always be the superior version.

Hasbro wouldn't allow it. Brian specifically approached them wanting to make o-ring, and Hasbro basically said they want to squat and hold onto the concept of o-ring figures even though they have no intention of making new ones. Brian was likely going to make Sunbow accurate versions with new sculpts like he's doing with the Reactions.

I'm going to see the movie just out of curiosity and just wanting to go back to a theater. I hate the casting decision but whatever, I'm a Snake Eyes fag. I'm curious what his actual backstory will be now because I hope he at least served in the military. Also the fights at least look cool and am hoping for at least one bikini scene with Baroness.

I recently snagged a Firefly and Cobra Trooper. Firefly might be the first figure I've returned since Golden Angel Predator. The mans torso is a brick and the legs on mine were super flimsy and finicky. Is this a common issue? I haven't opened the Cobra Trooper, if it's going to be the same as Firefly I'm just going to return him as well. The articulation on this guy just felt like it needed some refining or something.

The vest was a huge drawback for me, this was also my first time dipping my toes into the line. I may crack open the Trooper, but I'm not sure I enjoy the feel of these based on Firefly. I'll at least return him, but having a lone Cobra soldier hanging out will feel a bit odd.

Unrelated to toys but I stopped reading the comic around issue 30. I got attached to the original 13 and got more and more annoyed every time they got sidelined for shiny new characters. I also got tired of the shitty dragged out storyline that started around issue 23 or 24. I did enjoy the Snake Eyes origin though. Might try getting into Sunbow...got nothing else to watch right now.

I've been going through sunbow Joe. It's been a good ride, which surprises me too because Transformers felt like they didn't know what to do with sentient space robots and its cursed with David Wise scripts. GI Joe has a lot of marvel writers I recognize, and it feels like they just give a shit.

That said, if 23-24 is the swamp arc like I remember, you ought to get back into it. That arc does kind of drag, but there's still a lot of good stuff ahead. There's an issue I love where Rock n Roll and some of the greenshirt joes go on a roadtrip.

I opened the Cobra Trooper and what a night and day difference from Firefly. Really fun figure, the goggles are really neat too. I almost wish he was a lighter blue kind of similar to the guy you posted. My one criticism is I love the vibrant and crazy colors G.I. Joes have, this line could use some.

I think eventually Snake Eyes was just his best bet for a focused protagonist, especially with the reader response he got. There was still a large swathe of the comic where Hawk disappeared and Duke filled his roll, nearly twenty issues worth. And then Flint came in and could be field leader.

I just got mine today as well and I enjoy both. The loose hips thing is pretty common with Snake Eyes so I wasn't too shocked and I can fix that easily with pledge.

My only regret is not double ordering on the Trooper he was up for another few days.

I agree, i also felt he was too light on accessories and shouldve included more of them with him. Like i love how he comes with a stick of dynamite and i love all the little details in his backpack, but i really wish he came with another gun or two and a knife

Sorry it's just speculation, I should have phrased it better. To me it looks like we have a greedy GI Joe fan as a Target CEO requesting his personal favs and Troop builders because they know what GI Joe fans buy.

I actually like the bomb vest. I know thats a hot take and alot of people hate it for obstructing articulation in his body especially his ab crunch, but the bomb vest looks cool and i love all the scuffs and battle damage on it and all the grenades and magazines on it.

That said i do hope the regular release is more like a traditional firefly and doesnt have it either to make it different enough and to justify me for buying the second one.

They are allowed to do their own shit and the fact that people are so adamant is pretty dumb, especially since they're never going to do Larry Hama's GI Joe ever.

Hasbro themselves are probably upset at the fact that Larry Hama's GI Joe endures as much as it does and has it loyalists, which prevents them from doing anything new. They really should have tried harder or done multiple takes in the 90s, to grow another fanbase, before the people from the 80s all grew up to force Hasbro to continue retreading the same old shit. Now even 90s and 00s kids want Hama's take.

The changes to Snake Eyes just come off as shallow. Riling fans and garnering woke points are both beneficial in their own way, and I don't think the changes offer anything else. So it's shallow marketing and profiteering creeping into art as per usual, and I see no reason to stand for it.

It's okay, had some good set pieces and moments. Its similar to Renegades in that it basically focuses on a core team of Joes (even though for whatever reason they never call themselves Joes). Most bitching just seems to be upset that Snake Eyes isn't a white blonde guy and it seems people believe he already couldn't talk when he was at the dojos? His deformity and voice issues didn't happen until after that. And i don't think it's shallow at all.
It's them realising you can't have some mute character being the main character and if they want to center the franchise on him, they have to have a charismatic character whose face you can see while he talks and they're choosing the most known named character to do that.

Like i said, they have to pick at what Larry Hama did, and mold it into something that works for a mass audience. They really can't do their own shit because of the built in fanbase.
And then here's Hama saying people shouldn't be so anal and hopes that they do something good (seems he's only read the script), so maybe you should too.

Hasbro isn't allowed to do anything differently and must follow along your very specific nostalgia as best as they can. If they need to make a "shallow" change, it's better than doing the Adventure Team or have it starring Quick Kick and Spirit to fight their archnemesis Storm Shadow (fuck the 80s cartoon) if they really really needed to use non-white characters.
Seriously, the 80s cartoon was brain rot and i'd rather rewatch all the GI Joe movies than put up with that retardedness.

That's funny, because i never saw any of the movies in theaters nor paid a single cent for the DVDs, because why would i support something i don't like? I'll probably do the same shit for this movie, unless one of the trailers shows more promise or the movie has good word of mouth.

You don't have to, EE, and BBTS as well as others sell their products, Amazon will get small cases of it too. The Preorder from S7 just ensures you don't miss out. And looking at the buzz a lot of communities are had to preorder to get most if not all the Classifieds and they still missed out on so in irony Hasbro has made Super7s model the more attractive to collectors

The best part of Sunbow is all the different Joes you get introduced to, many of whom have episodes just about them and were neglected in the comics. And certain Joes are always paired up together. Shipwreck episodes are always high tier and some best.

The question was why Snake Eyes, in 2021, if the character himself is allegedly so bad to center a story around in 2021. I feel that's people just being hyperbolic. At it's core people see a line that gives a month window to secure your items when they are released vs a company that cant even get it's distributors to hold items for special events so now you have to put aggressive time and energy just to secure a chance at your item.

Not the case at all. Many prefer the cartoon or comic accurate looks over the package art. A common gripe in the 25th line was packing the toon colored B.A.T in a a box set because a lot of people prefer that look.

A bigger question is why even consider this is the narrative and not people buying what they want or what they find more joy out of? I question anyone that wants either brand but I do question why either said gets uppity what the other collects.

That's exactly why I did that mod. I ended up cutting a piece of styrene rod and gluing one of the magnets to that so that I could just insert the rod into the hole of the vest and can remove it if I want to. Or if they come out with some sort of accessory that might also plug in there.

These are the magnets I bought but like I said, they're aren't the strongest, and being attached to that spot on the guns tends to make them want to flip over themselves. I usually just get them resting at an angle against the rear pistol holster.

There's always going to be fans who want things other fans don't. There's plenty who want toon accurate, there's those who want toy accurate, there's a group who want comic accurate, I'm sure there's some who want package accurate and of course there's those out there, like myself, who want new figures inspired by the original characters.

The more lines with the more variety they make, the better. There's really no competition between these two lines because they're targeting different collector interests, and at best they can cause fans to double dip into both lines.

The ironic part is that the Trooper gun IS an actual Nerf gun and the Nerf gun itself doesn't even have that peg. The sniper rifle is also an actual Nerf gun that has a bolt action, but the bolt doesn't look nearly as bad as the peg either.

I love that they can stow their guns, I just wish there was a better method to do so. Flint's little shotgun holster is a great example of what they could've done with the trooper, even if it was only able to hold one gun.

The fact you have to put "few decades" is rather telling as they have greatly shrank their space and product amount over the last decade alone, hell in the last five years over half of their mainline brands have been exclusives to stores and online showing how great the shrinkage has been.

Incorrect, for awhile they would just return the unsalable inventory back to the stores, it's why many Target and Walmart's have started to limit or out right refuse returns when the scalpers roll in with their unsaleable merc. I mean, scalpers are not smart people because toy flipping is a waste of time that hardly holds enough profits, if they played that aggressively with crypto, the market and other outlets they have more to show for their effort than making the same profits as a taco bell worker in a year but now almost every thinks them a loser.

There is no dedicated mass market toy store (in the us at least) anymore and the big box department stores don't care about toys. When that line died, it wasn't because the figures were bad or the fans didn't like them, but because retailers didn't fully support it because the figures took up too much space for not enough profit per sale. Some of the best quality figures came about during the Retaliation run, but it saw little distribution because of retailers just being awful.

it was actually because of the second movie being delayed an entire year, leaving behind a toyline based on the movie without a movie to market it.
Basically, the movie line bombed, because it didn't get movie sell through numbers.

This is why by the time was actually released, all the major stores had stopped carrying GI Joe anything except for TRU.

So because the GI Joe movie line bombed, stores didn't want ot order anymore GI Joes.

That entire "space to profit ratio" is bullshit, especially since other 1:18s lines continued ot exist on store shelves.
This is actually Hasbro being greedy, trying to force their customers into buying a single scale. It's why they sabotaged the MU and even tried to sabotage the GI Joe line the same way without even having a 6" line replacement. They just wanted to increase profits without introducing anything new.

At the time, the only other line at that scale was...Star Wars I believe, and even that one went Wal-Mart exclusive. Fortnite was the first 1:18 line to really succeed, but that was due to being toys for a massively popular video game as well as having a variety of products in different scales and play types. Halo is *trying* to also bring back 1:18, using the same "based on a game and having scale variety" method, but it's barely on the shelves at this point.

At no point did Hasbro "sabotage" their Joe line, as they put out some fantastic stuff in the 50th line, at some great prices and values, while being very well stocked. But only TRU would carry them, because again, 1:18 was a dead scale at that point (aka pre-fortnite).

They've gone direct to consumer, they've done special mission packs, they've done retailer exclusive, hell, they even went odd scale weebshit, all to keep the line, and the fantastic figures going because fans *wanted* these figures. I'll give you Sigma Six not doing well, it was a...polarizing line...but still had it's fans. But both the 30th and 50th had fantastic figures and did very well considering the circumstances. Both lines did very well, with the 30th being a bridge line leading right into the Retaliation line and the 50th essentially going down with TRU. I don't know how you could consider either of em as a failure as the 30th literally ran it's course and the 50th had multiple extra waves running from '14 to '16 when it was only supposed to last a year.

Most of what you listed was either not actually 1:18 stuff (TTG, Hanna Barbera), not at retail (Powerlords, Outer Space Men) or based on big blockbuster movies (LotR, Robocop). The most enduring lines you listed, the ones still going to this day, were online/import only.

Except PTE, they still show up from time to time on toy shelves. There was also technically the True Hero stuff, and all the other Chap Mei things, which I kind of forgot about myself. Ironically that stuff makes up the bulk of my Joe and Cobra motorpools. Sadly that line also died with TRU, though Target does get random Dino sets from time to time.

After 94, Joe moved to Sgt Savage and Extreme. After those lines failed in '97 they started doing Team and Multipacks at TRU and Kaybee. There was a hiatus in 99, but the old builds came back from 2000 to 2002. From 2003 on, they did Spy Troops, then Valor v Venom and that stuff actually ran along side the Sigma stuff right up until 2007 where the 25th line came in and kicked everyone in the teeth. From there it was a solid run of releases all the way until Retaliation screwed things up with retailers and Joes went back to TRU exclusive. That lasted for three years until TRU itself shut down.

You were trying to argue that Hasbro switched scales because of retailers not being happy with price to shelf ratio, when that is not true at all, since they carried many other lines. ARAH GIJoe was created with the help of Hama, he was not the only source of it as countless documentaries and interviews with Hama show that much like Transformers Hasbro had the toys already made up but did not have the creative juices to personalize them, so like Zeus with clay Hama gave them backgrounds and personality for their file cards and comics.
Also all the brands success came from the 80s tv show more than anything else and that was a wide crew of people but Ron Friedman did all the writing that created the characters as we know them.

Hasbro has always been doing there own thing but just like Transformers the 80s TV show hook the cultural zygote in a way we have never left and looking at how they handled the brands they like it that way.

Most everything is a joint venture, but you can't deny that Larry Hama had the most input.
Unlike Transformers, Hasbro didn't even have bad guys for the GI Joe line when they were planning on relaunching the line. Cobra was invented by the people at Marvel, including Hama. Characters like Baroness didn't even exist until she was written into the Marvel comics.
If you look Larry Hama's credited work, you'd know that he was also involved in the cartoons as well, which you mentioned. Guy was key to GI Joe's success.

Cobra Commander himself was characterized by Larry Hama, and what would he have been without the characterization? Go look at all the generic bad guys from the 80s, including Transformers, to understand why Hama's characters are more long lasting and known than generic world domination bad guys like Skeletor, Hordak, Megatron, Shredder, Mumm Ra, and many other villains that got revamped without any problem from their fanbases... unlike CC.
See also the people in these threads, bitching about movie Snake Eyes and how much they've changed from it, because they expect him to be the silent ninja Larry Hama wrote (which Hasbro just had as a generic masked commando, looking like he's ready to bust IRA holdouts in Ireland)

Lemme just point again at GI Joe EXtreme as what Hasbro does when they put their creative juices together all by themselves. Does anyone really want that?

Also, Ron Friedman a shit. I can re-read the Marvel GI Joe comic today and still enjoy it. Can't do that with the 80s GI Joe cartoon, because shit's retarded. Like most 80s cartoons. Even if the characters are all following the character bible that Larry Hama wrote, the writing was still mostly shit. So whatever Friedman did, it's like bad fanfiction to me.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I legit cried when I got the newsculpt Joes. Their legs didn't move as well anymore, a lot of their arms couldn't sit in a resting position, and they didn't look right next to the hundred-something figures I had gotten from my older brothers and the handful of "Collector's Edition" I got.

I don't think every problem would've been solved, but I just feel like moving away from the O-ring was a huge mistake that has never been fully rectified.

That era was meant for me, but I just wanted to go back in time to a vague memory of seeing an Alley-viper and Street Fighter Joes on the pegs.

Larry Hama didn't create G.I. Joe. The original 13 pre-existed and Jim Shooter was the one who invented Cobra as bad guys for them to fight, because there were no bad guys. All Larry did was write the file cards to help him keep track while writing the comic. Jim Shooter created the concept of G.I. Joe for ARAH.

Also he was indeed there to write the comics and in the Toys that Made Us it's explicitly said that he was GIVEN the job of writing the file cards, because he had already made some for working on the comic and somebody at Hasbro like them.

Another take is like saying because Jim Shooter coined Transformers name as well as named their planet and factions that he created all of the Sunbow G1 cartoon.

The cast of the comic was nothing like the cartoon and in turn every remaining did it's own thing. GIJoe GI Joe resolute CC was a full blown Sociopath, but in Renegades, he was a Bond villain. I remember earlier someone asked about giving Classified Snake Eyes a Littlearmory MP7.

I gave one to Classified Firefly and it looks pretty good. His hands are a lot more playable than Snake Eyes' though so it may not be as easy to make it fit for that figure. Otherwise it should work. I've given my Snake Eyes plenty of other LA kits in the past and they've all worked well. I've seen people say that LA kits look too small on classified figures but I think they look great. Guns aren't as big IRL as most people think they are so I think it's pretty accurate.

I watched that waste of time that was Toys that Made Us and it glosses over a lot. If you read http://jimshooter.com/2011/07/secret-parts-of-origin-of-gi-joe.html/ you an actually piece together the short blurbs TtMU edited together and how that fits with what Jim Shooter wrote, which is much more detailed than what the childish episode said in 20 minutes. Stuff about the vague soldiers that designer that Hasbro created. funny how they only had a single guy doing all that from a toy company, right? It's no wonder they hired Marvel to help out and actually make it more than just the generic soldiers Hasbro's GI Joe team had done for the relaunch.

Marvel wasn't there just to write the comics and also produce the cartoon. If they were, it'd be just like any license, where everything is already finished and the materials on what to write has already been produced.
Hasbro hired Marvel for their "creative services" and it's why Marvel created the very concept of Cobra.

The insinuation about Hasbro being upset about what Larry Hama wrote is because fans want everything that he literally wrote. People are mostly completely fine with characters being redesigned, but NOT use Cobra or Cobra Commander? People bitching about making Snake Eyes some asian instead of that blonde war vet? Again, that's all shit Larry Hama wrote. Do you think people would bitch about Destro and not making him an arms dealer? Or how about not using Baroness at all and bringing in their OC?

If people only like the design, that's a load of shit, because of what people are literally bitching about in these threads. How many times have characters like Destro or Storm Shadow been redesigned? Lots and most of their designs are well liked... as long as the CHARACTER is based on the 80s comics, toys, and/or cartoons. Larry Hama had his fingers in each one.

ANYWAY, to get to the point, if people weren't so attached to that, it'd be much much much easier for Hasbro to produce whatever they wanted, just like we see with transformers. Just stick in a few nods toward the 80s source and transfags cream themselves. You can't do that with GI Joe, because the lore and characters are more valued.

Why do you make shit up? They wrote out so many characters because the original director walked over differences and those actor wouldn't agree to work with another director. That was a massive reason the second film was like as it was.

Biggest complaint was the looks and the hypersuits(which they got over because they more or less threw them away in the same film). Most were fine with the story for the most part with all the ire being at the ending many feeling they should have just let the bad guys get away for the sequel bait.

they still could have kept the original ideas and plotlines intact. instead it was basically a soft reboot where we get new characters and most of the old ones/old characterizations are ignored

it was more than that. basically Cobra Commander, Baronness and Duke had a shitty storyline. Destro wasnt used well. Duke wasnt a great leading man. Heavy Duty was crappy. Besides Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, most people thought the movie needed a lot of tweaking.
