I finally have some summer holidays so I can get some work done on my homemade Porsche 919, it is getting close to a paintable finish. I did a coat of primer to check out the progress so far, and it is not too bad.

You can tell how rough the finish was before the sanding and putty work inside the wheelarch where I haven't bothered to do any sanding work since it will be hidden from view anyway

SpeedChampions were a mistake. Barely got the look and have no functions. How come LEgo was able to make 2-seater Jeep in 1998 and can't come with proper 6-wide 2 seater car since then.

OP here just to answer my own question i'd like to see a secratary bird witch would be a little hard to do but I think if they used battle droid legs painted dark red and mad the top half have a clip on the bottom and an aardvark with a special mold would be nice.

Bought this thing because it was like 15 bucks and I was morbidly curious just how bad it actually was - oh boy, it's even worse in hand.

Almost every segment feels like as if you stop building it halfway through and nothing feels properly thought out.
Especially the thighs look like as if they forgot about half a dozen parts on each side and I still have no idea what the deal with the giant boat hull piece on the left shoulder is.
Is it supposed to be represent some shoulder armor version of one of those one-sided capes that cover one arm?
Well, one thing for sure: the space inside the hull isn't used at all and could've been where you'd store Lloyd's katana and fins when he's inside the cockpit or something.
Oh, and speaking of the cockpit: the figure doesn't even fit in properly thanks to its oxygen tank and the panel with a divider in the center that Lego keeps using to secure figures in vehicles isn't enough here to hold the fig in place, especially if a kid would play with it.
The designer probably even had a "well, shit" moment when he realised this which is reflected in the product images: nothing but the front image of the box actually shows Lloyd inside the mech and even the instructions end with him put only halfway onto the aforementioned panel and the canopy half open.

There are also some other issues like the really poor katana build for the mech that looks and feels like the designer was really scraping the bottom of the barrel for parts (probably after adding that fucking large boat hull) or how the entire arm sections are connected through 2x4 plates with frictionless pins on the side, you know, the ones that are normally used for stuff like cars, so they end up kinda wobbling around when you handle the model.
I honestly can't shake the feeling that the mech was once intended to be another 2in1 set like the vidya-season one, with the second mode being a fish-shaped submarine (boat hull as head with the seachlight as eye, claw as tail fin, skirt armor as pectoral fins, etc.) but somewhere along the line that feature got gutted.

tl;dr: I guess it's a decent parts pack if you're in dire need of a giant dark olive green boat hull, short golden blades and that dual-moulded canopy but even then you're better off bricklinking those.

Kardas really is a cut above the rest. Sure it's Bionicle and a combiner at that, but what they were able to accomplish with the parts given really is quite something. Still looks imposing to this day.
That said, I think as far as brick-built goes my pick might go to the green ninja mech dragon from the Ninjago movie. Ever since that once Ninjago has really been wiping the floor with dragon builds, it's great. That being said, anyone know of what the earliest brick-built dragon was? I can't think of any prior to Ninjago so long as you exclude Bionicle from the equation.
Anyways speaking of dragons, here's a dragon I made. Lego needs to make more Dragon parts in more colors that aren't widely available in sets. The white queen dragon was the best for that but naturally it costs a ton nowadays.

Really feels like they were trying to fill a quota for a cheap set here that fit the theme. Potter stuff is pretty reasonably priced for a licensed product. Those two sets are a bit redundant though - best to just get the current one as many of the figs in the Great Hall are obsolete (inferior Nick, inferior McGonagall compared to 2021 version, inferior Richard Harris Dumbledore, figure slots wasted on common ron/harry/hermione, only real key figure is Quirrell). Build of the Great Hall is nice though, but right now you're probably best grabbing the Chamber of Secrets and connecting it to the Bathroom and Fluffy kits from the same wave since they're all designed to be neatly modular and stackable, close to the original 2001/2002 Potter kits.

There are some weird contractual issues with making sets based on the good movies. I *think* new sets could come out but they would be about the gay new movies. Can any trainfags redpill me on Lego trains? I recently got a used lot that had most of set 10015: Green Passenger Wagon from the early 2000's theme "My Own Train". Doing my own research if I really want to build this out and run it I can get the other cars that came from this theme in the same year and also get the 9V tracks and the Transformer and Speed Regulator too. But is that my only option? Were there later generation of Lego train tracks and transformers that would be cheaper and I would be able to use with this thing? Looking at the original MSRPs on these it looks like you used to be able to build a whole awesome train set at a very affordable price.

I built alnost every dragon Set and Dragon Queen from Elves and Green NRG dragon from ninjago are best two dragons.

The new water dragon has nice design but its really horribly basic set compared tho those.

My current fav- Overlord dragon. Its not screen acurate but really solid and cheap dragon

Medium sized mechs are some of the most kino Lego sets.
Patlabor or Votoms in Lego form would be great.

on the topic of vehicleshit, 8 wide Initial D would be a cool excuse to get JDMs

Ghibli Lego would be the most aesthetically closest to Lego playsets. Otherwise, a lot of anime is something I think suits Mega Bloks better, simply due to the darker themes. Most anime licenses for brick toys would just be glorified minifig lines anyways. The concept of Dirty Pair minidolls is highly amusing to me though,

What I mean was both themes had been retired by then (Classic Space in 1988, Pirates in 1997). Space had some similar themes like Insectoids and UFO around then, but they're far removed from Classic Space.

Nostalgia but also very well done. If the set itself were shitty, people would be more upset by the homage aspect than if it were just some new standalone thing.
The rebuilt ship is almost exactly what I always wanted as a kid, perfect blend of realistic detail while still having that "play value" soul.

Some progress on the pirate's el dorado ruins

To whoever asked if I plan MOCs/wing it, it's a bit of both. I know what big clunky parts I want to use like raised baseplate, panels, rocks, bridge, etc. and figure out where I want them placed, then I wing it by filling in the rest with smaller details.

Since no one replied to my post I did some more research and discovered the main differences between the 9V trains and the modern "Powered Up" ones. It doesn't look like I need more than three pieces to change my Lone Ranger train into an electric one and I could just attach the passenger car to that and it looks like it would fit. I am tempted to get the newest City passenger train though. People are selling it on ebay and bricklink for a lot less than MSRP and it is still available in the Lego store. As someone who already spends way too much on Lego, is it wise for me to start dabbling in trains? Also I really have no space to make a nice long train setup. If only my selfish girlfriend would let me take over the guest room. But Nooooo where will people sleep when they come visit us?

Like you noted, the biggest thing with trains is the space. You need a massive table / area to have a permanent setup (same with monorail).

With the non-metal train tracks its really easy to convert any train to being powered. Honestly I'd recommend looking at some robin hood bricks YT channel for some of their train stuff to see how they do it, they have a good setup going on.

I am limited to building things on just a few baseplates to store on a shelf, the dream is a basement with a giant table but that won't happen.

I don't recommend getting into trains if you don't have the space, unless you are fine with temp setups or having a locomotive on a shelf.

As far as your gf / guest bed goes, I think it's acceptable to use it as an office space. Lego existing in a bedroom isn't keeping anyone awake. If you have space, do your hobby, guests don't care.

As /lg/'s resident trainfag I'm gonna tell you right away that you're right about the biggest trouble you're gonna have with trains is the space.

When it comes to powering your Lone Ranger train with either 9Volt or Power Functions/Powered Up, the biggest question you want to ask yourself is "Do I prefer train power coming from the track or remote controlled trains powered from a battery pack?" I'll be upfront and tell you that getting into 9V in 2021 is going to be expensive as fuck (With the current prices of used 9V train motors you're better off grabbing a new Powered Up Hub and just using that). Powered Up is still relatively new so I imagine it'll be about another decade before they drop it like they did with Power Functions.

As far as size concerns go, a loop of standard curves will be roughly 2 feet in diameter. You can fit a modest trackplan on a 5' long folding table that you could fold up and put away temporarily whenever guests come over. If you don't have the space to set up a 2 1/2' x 5' or 3'x6' table in your guest room then I'm not sure if trains are something worth getting into.

And actually because of the downloadable app, I don't even really need the remote control right? I guess that is an improvement over the Power Functions system... There is an informative review of the latest passenger train (60197) on brickset where the guy says the new Powered Up is dumbed down compared to the Power Functions. Below is a paste of part of his review. Do you guys think this is accurate?

"The new Power Up system as it currently appears in this set is very rigid. One remote or device can be used to operate one battery box/receiver, which in turn can operate one train motor. All of the flexibility of the old system seems to be gone. You cannot set two or more receivers on the same channel so they can be operated together with one remote. This eliminates a lot of the creative play that was possible with the old system, for example to make longer trains with more than one locomotive. What that dude's referring to won't matter if you're only planning on running one train at a time. Power Functions worked off of a 4-channel Infra-red signal (If you set the remote to Channel 3, it will only be able to control items connected to a receiver set to Channel 3). What that article is complaining about is that you can't put two receivers set to the same signal in two different locomotives and control them both simultaneously with a single remote with Powered Up, but you can still connect/control multiple trains at a time. The latter part where it says

will only matter if you're making huge ass locomotives that need more than one motor, and you can't stack motors to a single port on the hub like you could with power functions motor cords.

Still, I think his point stands. During the early 2000s even with the introduction of Star Wars Lego still had its core identity somewhat close to what it used to be.
What was being offered as a product was largely designed in-house and had no external link to other IPs and licenses. Further, the models weren't trying to be replicas or realistic models and instead builds were clearly a "lego" approximation of the things they were meant to represent.
With time that changed and focus shifted from play to more detailed representation of the target item. Is that good? bad?

tl;dr: Lego used to be its own thing and not model kits, but it sure is that now.

I have a $1 min lot avg and 100 max lots, but I feel like that's reasonable?

I've almost never encountered other stores that have stricter requirements than that though, most seem really reasonable other than the maybe 40 max lots which can be frustrating, or some dumpwads with like $50 min order.

My biggest complaint is stores that don't have auto-checkout enabled, then randomly invoice you with like an extra $2 fee or some shit. Trash. I basically don't buy from stores that don't have autocheckout (unless its a big 1lb+ order that requires calculated shipping anyway).

I also only order from international stores with auto checkout. Usually it's in germany and around 20 bucks shipping.

I was captivated by the box when I saw it in the store. It ended up being one of my favorite sets as a kid. It didn't stay together long but it turned into a lot of different MOCs. a civil war fort, a castle, a space ship. That staircase was so good. Minifigures were great too. I lost the ghost years ago but I still have all the others.
