Lariska is Dark Hunter and a cliché domina character. Greg will piss and shit in anger if you call her Vortixx but everyone agrees that she definitely is one.
Marendar is Toa Killer Robot build as a safeguard by (probably) Velika. He woke up when Mata Nui merged the three plantes.
I think that both these characters should have stayed obscured and I hope that whoever faggot included them in contest will die with his head in toilet. We already have perfect Lariska model you can build from Nidhiki and Krekka

It's heresy and whatever, but I'm curious, has anyone else tried sanding down the mata eyestalk so it's more easily removable?
I tried it on a whim on a spare just now. Blunting the inner eye hooks a bit still leaves a pretty secure connection, but becomes easily yanked off with a brick separator or something. There is a really minimal amount of wobble but I think you'd need strong autism to be put off by that (I am put off by it somewhat). Still more of a hassle than it's worth and it's not like it can do anything for shit already stuck together anyway, but eh. Having to keep buying more is also a pain in the ass.

Their colors match my idea of them, sans Bomonga/Pouks, whose armor colors I envisioned switched. But I figured a black/gold Bomonga would win, it was by far the most popular option. My reasoning for a black/gunmetal Bomonga was that it would be more appropriate for his stealth fighting style, but this is good too.
Now, I hope artists don't change these TOO much. I know Kodiak gave permission to change anything about his Hagah, but don't fix what's not broken. I'd especially hate to see the armor colors being changed (especially Kualus's), or Bomonga's ridiculous proportions normalized.

On the other hand, things I'd like to see changed
>Kualus's mask (never been a fan of the Mask of Sensory Aptitude and its silly google eyes. Just don't give his mask an eyescope, for the love of God)
>Pouks's mask (that Kakama looks cool, but give him the canon MoE design, as a final fuck you to TTV admins)
>Gaaki's armor/spear choices (I've always liked Pridak's shark blade for her, but I've also always wanted Gaaki's design to somehow reference fire, as a direct opposite to Norik)
>Pouks's spear (kind of underwhelming compared to the others, and doesn't really communicate "Avalanche")

The other things can be changed or not, doesn't matter much. Kind of wanted one or two of them to use a Rahkshi spear for maximum irony, but I'll take whatever wins in the end. I'll use the winner designs as a starting template for my own versions anyway, like I've always done.

Is flex tube supposed to be basically completely inflexible? I got some to try the Mata neck thing, but this shit is stiff as hell. Especially when cut into the proper neck length it has virtually no give, just feels like solid plastic. Even when forcibly bent it doesn't hold well, and looks like it's just getting dented/damaged instead of just being elastic. For such a widely touted method I expected something less annoying.
My one thought is maybe I got abnormally strong ones, but the stuff on my Boxor doesn't feel much different. Have a gunmetal tube from an incomplete bahrag and that feels marginally better, but doesn't feel like it'd work that well either. Don't know if I'm missing something or what.

Do you mean click hinges replacing the #2 connector? I’m not into that. I think the bushing protruding from the neck is an integral part of the aesthetic.
I’ve been using those pin hole with axle pieces to give them side-to-side motion for the past couple years, but I figured it was worth trying the tubes to get some other axes in there. Guess I’m just sticking with that though.

Because Lego encourages fan creations and the game is basically just that. If they took down the game, they'd have to take down MOCs too. As long as it's free, Lego's okay with it, that's also why they let BioMedia freely archive and distribute their old media, including the official games and movies.
The older fan game though, Quest for Mata Nui or whatever, is in a muddier legal territory because it's technically a mod of a Starcraft game so Lego is not the only company whose property is being used.

I imagined that the actual ball would be the bottom piece that plugged into the body, and the socket would be the top piece that plugged into the head, so that movement wouldn't be blocked. That being said, the person on shapeways who made that piece also is selling a socket with a bar, if that's something you need.

What's the best way to make custom parts? Like, if you can get a hold of the 3D models of pieces. I know some people like Socketball do custom resin casts for masks, but he's very sporadic in his batches, n' I want more than just masks lol.

Ended up building the Exo-Raptor. It's definitely not as impressive as the Toa, but I like it. Would probably look best with something a little smaller than a Toa though, maybe something built with a slizer torso

Because they use a new mold after old ones have expired and lego molds as durable as they are expire faster than other toymolds cause they gave to ensure they are compatible wirh everything previous. A warhammer statue mold can have microfracture in it's hand yet still be printed 10k units afterwards

This is unrelated to bonk parts or lego parts turning shit as it's due to plastic quality/type more so and the cooling process etc.

Not sure what you’re getting at my point was that unlike some conventional toy like an action figure were the mold wears out, and they never remake the mold, lego I feel makes new molds all the time even of old parts that have been in circulation for decades- so if they have a way to accurately do that with system parts they can probably do that with technic pieces.

Yeah, it was the "Bionicle Day" fan interview. Wasn't as in depth as I'd have liked but seeing and hearing Bob Thompson again was a blast. He also showed off his Takanuva statue made out of junk that he got as a gift.
Other than some interesting things mentioned here and there, it was kind of a mediocre interview, most of the guests barely talked, just sat around awkwardly. At least Bob made it clear that the "20 year Bionicle story bible" is just a myth. There was no all encompassing story document, no real "seven books of Bionicle", they just made stuff up as they went but kept some basic ideas that they carried across multiple stories. This is of course not a surprise, since we already knew that their plans were always changing. For example Bob admitted Makuta wasn't meant to be evil, but that idea was abandoned by 2005. Greg said his favorite thing about all of Bionicle was rewriting Makuta from his 01-04 persona to the "evil mastermind" character we see in the later years.
Faber shilled NFTs as usual and said he'd like to make a virtual Bionicle museum. Swinnerton said he was very proud of coming up with the name Mukau.
The main they all remember was how Bionicle became far bigger than they imagined, and the idea of combining CGI imagery with storytelling opened up new potentials to Lego. They listened to Jurassic Park music to get the desired atmosphere. Bionicle was meant to be an ancient mystery that would inspire kids to interact and theorize, and not just play with the toys. Swinnerton thought both the audience and the in-story characters should feel the same surprise whenever they uncovered a mystery.

You're phrasing this like there's some kind of mystery technique at work here, but I really doubt that's the case. They probably just take the data for the piece (no reason to ever delete that) and make a mold the same way as the first time, except way cheaper because the entire design process is skipped.

There would have to be some secondhand bricklink type shop that orders massive quantities of custom color parts on its own expense hopping to get rid of all of them. Even if you order 2-3k pieces from China you'd stil have to jack up the price quite a bit on top of needing to sell out.

The second one with members from Templar and Saffire was much more fun, plus especially the solo stream Sayger did at the end of the first day; all of those folks definitely gave off the feeling like they were pumped to be talking about Bionicle, like they appreciated it just as much as us. I'm disappointed they wasted the questions about Kapura on the Templar guys rather than asking Bob or Swinnerton about them. Greg has said long ago that Kapura's oddities were probably Bob's ideas. Also, Kapura's portrayal in MNOG was more so a holdover from the PC game, not something that Templar had come up with.

The metru torso with the levahk kal shield are the only bits from the original build. Granted Ravager is probably one of the harder characters to revamp since he is just a bunch of sets cobbled together with no defining features. Like the other anon said this works better as an infected tahu.

Sure, I'll elaborate.
I'll start off with saying it's excessive. The 5 torsos thing is cute in concept but the actual moc itself is just unwieldy and a proportional nightmare. The forearms are big, but the additional shaping provided by the fuckhuge fingers make them even bigger. The thighs are miniscule in comparison to eveything else, both in width and length. When knees are bent it soldom makes any discernable difference to the figure's height, so a crouched pose is laughable. The shoulders are spaced weirdly thanks to the gear and 'posable shoulder' gimmick which makes the torso itself ironically too small. The way the finger sockets are attached is retarded. You can splay the sockets out but that just causes them to wobble around and is easily remedied by just linking them together with a 2 long axle(so why Double didn't do that who fucking knows). As far as I can tell the spear is just rested in the figure's hand so it just wobbles around and falls out. There's no reason why it couldn't have been anchored in like with Axonn. The shield is attached with a single pin into the forearm, which means that it spins freely and has no place to attach a Rhotuka spinner as there's no space for it - so the shield can't even do what it's canonically supposed to. The ankles are flush to their connection point, so you can't angle or tilt them sideways without the balljoint moving off the axle. Not really a problem per-se, but the Metru chest guard is held in with friction and a half-stud technic liftarm under the Metru foot on the chest. The axle that holds this liftarm on is a half-stud too long, but the piston on the Metru foot gets in the way of it, so for the foot to rest flush with the body, it pushes the axel out the other side of the moc.

I'm also just not a fan of the armor choices as I think they're lazy. (We've seen Metru builds with the same thigh and shoulder armor a million times). Lastly fuck that shitty redesigned "Metru style" Faxon.

Ravager is probably one of the hardest mocs to revamp because he is just so boring. As bad as most of the Dark Hunters are, they have something unique and distinct going for them. Even the really basic builds Shadow stealer or Amphibax have some semblance of a personality that can be capitalized on.

Damn, I've been looking for a (possibly Japanese) MOC that someone made. It's a CHONKY military mecha made of tan CCBS torso shells (which is pretty cool because the "head/sensors" is implied to be the collar of the shell) , and I just can't seem to find it after 3 days of looking. I wanted to say either Moko or IGU took a pic of it at a convention but I haven't seen it on their blogs or flikr pages.

If you want some serious criticism, I think the hook is a bit too wonky for the rest of it, and it appears obscured as well, so I would keep that in mind in the future. I also don't like the generic mask choice. Otherwise, I'm with everybody else, this is really good, you did great, and I'd like to see more of your work.

I agree with >>9248201 about the composition. Looking at the official renders, they usually placed objects, lights and colors in ways to make the characters stand out and be visible even when the images were scaled down to small thumbnails for toy adverts. So for example in your pic, if the hook is meant to be a kind of focal point, it shouldn't blend in with the dark background stuff. The official pics also used a lot of 2D photoshop effects like painted-in dust, steam, light rays or motion lines around the characters to make everything distinct, but those could be harder to imitate with just 3D.
Other than that, Gali with hook arms will always be the best, no matter what Greg said about her having hands. The guy probably has aphantasia, I don't trust what he thought about characters he didn't even design.

Yes I agree the hook is hard to see. And it's got different proportions from the real set. But at the same time I was intentionally trying to make own version. Will have to make it look "meaner" and more deadly somehow. Current design is underwhelming

So. Would it be possible to export Studio builds out to Blender or CAD and then 3D print them for painting/army building? Not in 1:1 scale, but shrunken down. Would this be possible? It seems like it'd be a much more cost efficient way to make mocs in physical form.

Curious, were these sorts of promotions ever very popular for their art style (set along with 3d/photoshop elements as seen with krana and turaga in your photo)?

I'd wonder if 4channers or even the saner elements of reddit would actually make a good thing out of some sort of competition to recreate scenes from the Dark Hunter MOCs everyone is constructing, then to use them in creating photos/setpieces to create the mixture to replicate these 2001-2003 photo elements.

Serious answer, I think the first 7 years were great but year 6 and 7 started some figure problems that really crippled the remainder of g1. 08 was the beginning of the end though, that was when it started feeling stale (though I still liked it then and still now, even up until stars.)

04/05, 08/09/10, and g2 are the most controversial periods of bonk imo, with 06 coming up behind as a number 4

I think the titans of the Voya Nui saga were fucking insane. Vezon and Fenrakk are arguably a perfect set together. I know umbra's just a mishmosh of leftover parts (including the yellow pincer parts from battle of metru nui) but even so his design was sick as fuck.
In terms of uniqueness the barraki take the cake for canister sets.
In terms of old school soul and design, nothing beats the exo-toa. The playability, the imposing features, the orange highlights. Recently built one from an open box w/ sealed bags and it was so fun. Wish he had knees or ankles but hey, can't have everything eh?

05, because it feels a bit more edgy than it needed to be. Sure it wasn't 80s anime levels of dark, but compare 05 to the previous years. They balanced out the darker stuff with the rest better and though I do love alot of the new rahi content, it had alot more misses than hits.
On the bright side, we got Piraka the year afterward.

After a certain point I ended up with a fuckton of sets and I figured I should sell the duplicates. I got an exo-toa from a facebook marketplace purchase that had 2 out of 3 bags (i think?) sealed and building it was so much fun. It's a good time.

fun fact, a momma deer got spooked by a dog in the neighborhood when i lived in pittsburgh ages back and left her baby deer/ran away. I got to play with that baby deer with my cousin who was visiting from the motherland. We ran around in the back yard after we checked that deer for ticks and we saw the fourth harry potter movie in the living room with the baby deer falling asleep next to us. Before I got up though my grandma saw the momma deer who came back looking for the baby deer and she let him out. The baby deer (that we named bambi) stared back at us then at the mom, unable to choose. My grandma carried him closer to the momma deer and they both galloped away. I saw him last summer and spoke to him for the first time in 10 years. He still remembers that memory.

Also his younger brother stole my G1 gali mata and his aunt beat the shit out of him. I have like 2 sealed galis so it's all cool now.

I wouldn't say it was a full on decline because I did like plenty of stuff from the later years, but to me 2005 was the big turning point.
It was an unplanned arc with no guiding vision. Most of the earlier stories built upon each other, but the Hordika stuff more like a diversion that didn't need to be set in the prequel. It had too much going on and felt directionless. The quest for Keetongu, the quest for the Makoki stones and the Mask of Light, the quest for airship parts, the quest to capture Rahi, the Toa fighting their animal sides, Vakama going insane, the pointless double twist of the Metru not being destined to be Toa but actually they were, Roodaka scheming, then the Time Trap subplot stuck on the end as an afterthought. I also hated how they already set up the return of the real Dume the previous year, then completely forgot about him and introduced another short, wise, elderly red guy to lead the Toa around.
Bob Thompson left Lego and Bionicle was without a story leader, Templar Studios was also gone, most of the comics and books fucked around with meaningless side plots because any real plot development was held back for the movie. The story tried to be dark even though we already knew the Toa would win cause it was a prequel and Greg's shortcomings as a writer and his love of edgy material really began to show. Some say '04 lost the old atmosphere and the sense of mystery, but I think it was still there. There was a lot of good world building and environmental design design in Metru Nui. '05 was just generic ruins and green spider cum, the world outside of Metru Nui was arguably more intriguing but the story couldn't go there.
Sets were mixed, I liked the titans, Hordika were a decent idea executed badly, the Visorak were neat but nothing special.

Even if you don't believe me or think I'm being too hard, and you wanna email him, guaran-fucking-tee that he can take an exact picture of the sets you're "buying" from him alongside an EXACT timestamp date and time. And again, you're paying this guy through Paypal - make sure you at the very least pay for it as a "goods & service" transaction instead of a "friends & family" transaction - the latter of which you are incapable of disputing if he takes your money and runs. The former DOES let you dispute.

I posted some of the pics ages ago several times in the past you smoothbrain but I didn't sell anything at the time faggot. It's easier for me to type and post at the same time on a mac rather than my phone, and some of the photos were taken w a fuckin iphone se gen1 rather than my galaxy fold so some of the photos fucking suck lol. Worst part is I gotta resize photos from the galaxy fold since there's an image size limit. It's dumb but sending myself the photos through insta means the photo size will get reduced/easier to download onto then posting from the mac.
