Anyone else getting priced out of collecting?

Price increases have been happening for a few years now, but it's gotten particularly bad in the past year. Imports are regularly over $100 now and even cheaper domestic lines from Hasbro and NECA are skyrocketing quickly in the past few months

Considering the QC's been great for a while now, it's not a crazier jump in price. It's just how much everything's going up. Plus the cloth goods, plus all the accessories, plus two $30 figures.

I'm getting there. No way in hell do I want to start paying nearly $30 for basic Hasbro shit which is about to be the reality soon. I stopped getting as many imports a few years ago, and have only grabbed three in the last year or so. It's not even a matter of not being able to afford them, it's just stupid to spend so much on dumb plastic when half the time the quality isn't meeting that price or they're barebones in terms of accessories.

Not yet. I was shocked the NECA Frankenstein was $30. I almost didn't buy him, but knew I would regret it if I missed him now. I try to group my overseas purchases to save on shipping. Otherwise I have naturally been slowing down collecting because my main toy lines have slowed down, and I ran out of room.

It's the combo of price increases with bad QC for me. Figuarts used to be rock solid but now every other release in the Dragon Ball line has had a major widespread issue. I'll pay for quality, but more and more I feel like I'm gambling, and it's a pain in the ass to get replacements. A few retailers even started sticking "no refund" notices on Mafex figures.

Honestly yeah I am. I am very picky on what I collect these days. It's a sad state when at the rate of prices soon I will only be able to afford McFarlane and Legends shit. Since most import companies are close to a $100 a fig. Even some domestic companies are close to 60$ a fig.

I think we are close to a burst in the bubble for toy collectors. The past couple years have been a great time for toy collecting when it comes to selection, but the prices have been creeping up steadily along with that.

I have a room full of toys and decent articulated versions of most of my favorite characters from my favorite franchises. Individually there's plenty of characters I could get a newer, better version of..but taken as a whole I'm happy with what I have for the most part. Do I want to keep buying a better Spider-man, a better Goku, a better Optimus, every couple years forever? No.. what I have now is better than what I had as a kid and thats alright with me.

I have a few of friends with dads who collected who I'm friends with too and they all generally stopped around their 40's and 50's but still happily owned and displayed their stuff from the 2000's and older. a lot of them quit around the time Sam Goody and Suncoast went out of business.I've shown them newer stuff and I've given some as gifts to them and they think its cool and are happy to get it but don't feel compelled to keep upgrading.

Goodsmile lost me. Nendos and figma were in the low 30 range not that long ago. The re-release of levi is the best example of how far they have gone. 25-29 in 2014 aftermarket those same figures have fluctuated between 65-115. The Goodsmile reissue wholesale on levi starts at around $70. I do not need any figure that bad.

Honestly I feel bad for NECA buyers.
Recently bought the trio of Aliens that just came out and all had QC issues, swapped one and got another and the damn thing also had QC.

The best figures Ive gotten from them were the 100th Predator and Shadow Master Super Shredder.

Back on topic, honestly at this point I do most my shopping on ebay or 3rd party sells/trades. Marvel Legends are $24(After Tax).

Not entirely, I'm still restricted more by space than money because I live in an apartment in a city. I rotate my displays but it cuts down on the impulse to buy stuff when I know it'll end up in the figure/accessory closet if I don't like it enough to display it over other things.

But rising prices, bad QC, and cutting corners on stuff like accessories are definitely issues affecting my enjoyment of most figure lines.

Now you look online and all you get are either the overpriced brand name lines or cheap dollar store tat. The middle ground toys are all drying up. It's like with video games. Cheap, sometimes fun shovelware is now a thing of the past and all you get are either AAA titles or indie projects. Shit sucks

I have collected toys for 20 years. I’m really thinking at this point, aside from any outstanding preorders I have at AmiAmi, I’m done with the hobby. My last purchases were the Project BM Kaneda and Bike, and honestly I think I could sell off most of the rest of my collection and be happy with just those two and my Macross stuff at this point. It’s reached the stage where the quality and selection of what’s being produced doesn’t tally with the prices for me, I would rather spend that money on something that presents better value. Maybe I’ll get back into model-making or collect rare books instead.

Not so much priced out, but I've kind of hit my limit for amount of space I'm willing to allocate to my manchild Dragnball and pokemon shit and if I continue it will just detract from the aesthetics. Doesn't help that the Dragonball Figuarts quality of figures is going to shit since they switched the factories to Vietnam.

So If I wanted to keep collecting I'd need to switch stuff out, sell stuff, but with the $600 ebay change next year where their apparantly going to tax the fuck out of you for hitting $600 that makes that a less appealing option when it comes to reselling stuff you are tired of/no longer want.

I've sensed this for at least a year now. I decided to stop being a completionist and just sell the figures that I don't feel too much attachment to without bothering to get their newer versions. Also brand loyalty ("I'll buy most or every release from brand A to support them so they can make more, because I love [insert particular quality the brand does]") is a horrible thing in the long run. I understand but I have been able to find cool statues or miniatures or collectibles of my favorite characters here and there.

when you open yourself and you open your hobby style, you can find all kinds of cool things.
the good thing about this hobby is that there are hundreds of collectibles. even a cool keychain can be amazing to have.
it depends. figures are cool,but is not the end all of the hobby.

The pricing is definitely starting to be a concern. Hasbro's stuff I barely feel comfortable paying $20 for, so its already dangerously close to me cutting it off at $23. I buy a lot of S7's stuff, and its gone up $10 a figure in the past year. I had intended to go all in on the thundercats and silverhawks but decided to cut back to major characters and just skip the silverhawks entirely. Import price creep has been there for the last decade or so but combined with the shipping increases that stings more than usual too.

From my experience people only go to BST, forums, facebook etc. as bargain bins where they want the figure to be like a third cheaper of the way cheaper. otherwise they just buy ebay. Not to mention it's so much more of a hassle to sell on those type of mediums because you don't get nearly the traffic as ebay where you can just upload it and let it sit for as long as it takes. even after the ebay fees you still make more there. I'll probably end up using them in the future when I'm near my $600 limit(although I believe paypal will also have this limit) because fuck giving this government additional taxes, but my solution is just going to be less buying/selling as a whole because theres no getting around it short of in person/cash transactions and that comes with its own can of hassle.

Mercari is probably the worst of all. You get the worst of both worlds. The bargain bin shoppers who lowball everything with the ebay fees to go with it. In fact their fees are even worst than ebay since the shipping is more expensive.

I used to collect Hot Toys figures, but between their insane price hikes and everything they make now being from films I hate that one went out the window fast. The same goes for a lot of the Japanese companies making 6” figures, they stopped making things I have any interest in.

I disagree, it depends on what you're selling. I pushed my Kamen Rider Figuarts/SHFSS and some Transformers really fast through local classifieds.

What did you buy before? I used to collect Ultra-Act and Kinnikuman Figuarts but those lines died years ago and I'm still a bit better about that.

It's mostly because I moved to collecting 1/6 scale figures. I always liked to have figures from the games I played but those are very rare in the 1/6 scale. Mondo announced a 1/6 Doom Slayer and seemingly forgot about it. Hot Toys could make some great Halo or boomer shooter figures but they'd rather do Disney stuff. On the anime side I really only collect the figures I'm not allowed to post here. But most of the anime I end up liking never gets any merch outside of acrylic stands or keychains. I commissioned a 1/6 scale Duke Nukem and another figure I certainly cant post here, and I think that is the way forward for me. Personalized custom stuff either commissioned or kitbashed together by me.

More recently I've been buying Moncolle figures from TOMY to fill out my Pokemon collection a bit more. The following for them state side is almost non existent these days making it easy to get most of what you want for retail assuming you don't wait ages to buy it and know where to buy. They do have figures that sell for $40 - 80 but I got them at retail years ago so there's no need now. There's always the shipping fees, but I just don't even count them anymore. It's just a part of life now.

The moncolle line is obscure, Pokemon in general is not. I even made sure to specify that it was the line that was obscure and state side. Products are scalped to shit when they are desirable across the globe. Moncolle is mainly only attractive to the Japanese making it cheap and affordable for me. I don't collect Pokémon myself but even I'm very familiar with the Moncolle line. Before Scale World(?), it was your only decent option to collect Pokémon at its detail (ie. Not kid toys) and the diverse selection. If you aren't wanting to collect plushies or trading cards, Moncolle was your option.

I'm not arguing with you for the sake of it, I'm simply disagreeing. And I would still say the fact that it's a toyline from one of the most globally successful franchises with an adult and kids market wouldn't make it obscure whatsoever.
You say it's poorly stocked, and then say it's scalped and desirable across the globe... Which makes it the *opposite* of "obscure". It's popular.

It's reasonable to believe a user of /toy/ would be acquainted with a toy line. Also reasonable to believe a Pokemon fan knows of it. It would even be fair to say that if you grew up in the late 90s there's a chance you would be aware of the existence of the TOMY toy company. That doesn't mean the general population knows that the line exists or that it's still being produced but not sold commonly in the states. I've never met a single person in the real world who was aware of the line and you certainly can't just walk into a store and purchase them which only drives down awareness. Either way, the entire point was that the line I currently collect is affordable and thus not phasing me out of collecting which is accurate.

Lol I know that feel bruh, there's a couple dudes in my local TF community whose hobby is patrolling TF groups on FB and TFW for arguments that they can autistically nitpick on. Some months I buy no toys or games at all. More to buy is more to store and move and more to dust, and less money in my pocket when I need it for emergencies.

Besides I already have a reasonable collection that I loved when I bought it and I still love now, so I like to go back and enjoy what I have and be content without feeling the constant need to add more of the same characters or stuff I never really wanted.

That's no fun. What's more fun is creating your own toys. For all the bitching about NECA quality control issues, you're definitely NOT going to get better with 3D printed toys. Posing is going to be a bitch. So as toys, 3d prints will always be frustrating, BUT as dioramas / pure sculpts, they're great. But as an additive to your existing collection they're incredible.

You have to paint your 3d prints, so why not just buy a beater off ebay and paint it like new? At least then the joints will handle more wear.

I'm sick of Marvel Legends. When they're good they're good, but some designs just leave me cold. Have been cherry picking instead of buying full waves, have abandoned all MCU crap, as well as more modern characters, will never buy their diversity hire crap like Riri Williams.

I'm still buying NECA's, but only stuff I like. I'm still buying $18 ReAction figures because I love the aesthetic. I'm only buying OT Star Wars. But lately I'm far more interested in buying vintage toys. I always wanted Kenner Super Powers, never had any, now I have almost a full set.

I just HATE "the chase". The constant spamming of never-ending waves of shit trying to evoke a Pavlovian response of "gotta get it NOW!", which is far less satisfying than enjoying what I already own.

My favorite line right now is the new Marvel Retro 5POA line at $10 each. I love the style, I grew up with it, and the scale means I can make more epic dioramas with limited space.
