Toys, and collectibles as a whole were being seen as premium collector's items that were meant to saved and kept pristine, and "invested" in. That's how you got a fucking insane Beanie Babies market, among other thing.

And then everyone woke up one day and decided this shit was worthless, and that's why you can find most of that shit, still to this day, for barely its retail price from 25 years ago.
