As a whole Japanese society and culture are pervasively xenophobic, conservative, and conformist.
They have rampant pedophilia themes and normalization entangled throughout their pop-culture.
The way they socialize their youth is so disfunctional that they have a literal epidemic of young adults socially traumatized into being complete shut-ins.
Parts of their culture still all but Encourage suicide in various circumstances, which explains the shear number of cases they have.
And all of that is after America blunted the edges off the worst parts of their culture by nuking two of their fucking cities.
(WW2 atrocity rehashing, feel free to skip/skim) An action which was only necessary because they’d rather hold the line long enough for their own civilians to throw themselves off a cliff then allow them to be dishonored by actually surrendering.
Also worth noting that Japanese killed 11 million civilians in that war, a large number by the fucking sword. Killed 1/3 of all of the POWs they captured. And committed medical experiments so gruesome they’d have made the Nazi blush. All while teaching a generation of Doctors how to practice by observing human vivisection. And now, unlike Germany, a large portion of their population likes to pretend none of that ever happen, and WW2 was just something that happened to them. So frankly, there’s a fair argument that we didn’t steamroll their culture thoroughly enough when we won, and we should have gone a bit farther.
(In-before someone thinks this is CCP propaganda or something, despite all this stuff being throughly documented by American and Imperial Japan’s own records and testimonies.)
So yeah, Anime and manga are great, and a lot of the quirkier parts of Japanese culture are fun. But their culture is still pretty deeply fucked in a lot of ways. And they’re only as not shit as they are because they had half their entire culture torn down.
