This is one of the few sets with a sort of toy DLC add-on for it. They created a figure called the Cybot, which came with a new version of the character Cyber-Skull.

I remember my female cousins having Polly Pocket and I thinking the idea was super cool but I couldn't get any sets because it's for girls, I still probably played with them.
Also pic related, they had all 5 Sailor Moon castles, they weren't mini like the polly pockets but they were a similar idea.
Was also mad jelly about these (especially because I also liked Sailor Moon), wish they made something like this but for boys, like Dragon Ball or Saint Seiya would have been great.

I think this is what brought the downfall. There is no real playset in it. It is just an action figure. If you look at >>9349370 and the wave 4 prototypes, they wanted the playsets to fight with the battle warrioirs. But kids liked playsets and had other action figures they liked more.

I have a TMNT set/figure that's kind of like this, it's a big turtle but the shell/belly/head all open up into a little playset. I've long-since lost the head but I still have a couple of the turtle figures with these little bits of chest armor.

I think we should have 4 criterias to rate the sets.
Sculpting, Minifigures/Monsters, Playset-value/Playfeatures and Shell folding (Monsters incorporation, parts are part of shell and playset or how parts fold in).

Rattus spider is a clever idea to be the hairs. But playfeatures are missing. You only get a cell. Than some lasers.

Thats another good criteria
Vamp Biter and Nuke Ranger are one of the best sets were you have a monster or machine incorporated in the closed shell.

Are we sure it isnt just people trying to sell their old stuff at inflated prices to pay for food and rent? I have bought a few figures from 90s toy lines since 2020 and have noticed a disconnect between what is typically offered by the sellers when they set prices and what auctions that start at 0.01 end at at high traffic storefronts (no shortage of buyers).

Spawn figures for example--I've seen offered buy it now prices inflated by almost 10 bucks on some of the rarer figures (Zombie Spawn=~$24; Curse of the Spawn=~$23) compared to what I have seen them actually sell for at auction (ZS=$15.50; CotS=$16.05).

I guess? Since everything else is so strong and once you have one of him you get a lot of duplicates but I don't have a problem with him. The MM toys, including Max, were stellar in what they set out to do. They were extremely fun environments that gave me many hours of entertainment.

If one is rating sets I think one also has to take into account separating the price/size differences. So grouping mini sets, regular and deluxe separately. Not sure if there were two types of Deluxe however. I had Magus and it did not seem nearly as big as Skull Mountain, so its tough for me to say they are in the same class unless their msrp was the same (which I kinda doubt)

My sister and female cousin had a bunch of Polly Pockets, while my brothers and I had almost all of the Mighty Max Doomzones, big sets like Skull Mountain and Dragon Island, and a few smaller ones. When we played, we would link all of them together and had Max and Polly living in the normal world, then getting zapped into the Doomzones and having to work together to escape. It was fun.

There is a bigger interest. What i saw is that around 2018 more toy bloggers and sites covered some Mighty Max. Maybe it was just the IP renewal from Mattel that some people got nostalgic about Mighty Max?
But i can see that interest results in sellers thinking they can get more bucks for their toys.

Weak point as in too many similar Max figures. At first they gave him, different caps. At least then you had a different Max. The Dread Heads tried to have variations.
It is hard that you have to include a Max figure, because a set could be a kids first playset. And if a kid likes to buy a Dread Head to get a Max figure? Kinda gambling. And dont forget molding costs for different Max figures while he is kinda the same.
There is a weird and not easy to overcome situation with toys. If you have some main character or signature toy. On one hand you need them avaible for first time customers but dont have too many doubles. In my experience with kids, they get annoyed of double characters, if the toy is not army-buildable or the kids are not some completionists.
A problem you see with Masters of the Universe, Turtles, Power Rangers, Ninjago Barbie, Bumbleebee-Transformers.
In my eyes Power Rangers and Ninjago did the best job of presenting the main characters in new designs. I would count Barbie too for selling the same character in new clothes. And Transformers to a certain degree too.

Good point. We can group the playsets in 4 categories. Big (Magus, Skull Mountain, Skull Master, Dread Star), Medium (Doom Zones, Horror Heads, Battle Warriors), Small (Shrunken Heads, Dread Heads, Monster Heads) and figures (Heroes & Villians).
And we cant expect thesame playability or minifigures from a Shrunken Head like a Horror Head.

I can understand that each Max mold would be costly and they prefer to have a generic max in each set and use the budget for a different mold for one of new characters. I think having 8 different max sculpts is enough and just having them be different colored caps would work, that alone woud give them 8 64 different figures that would make sense.

I loved dinosaurs, seeing Mighty Max as a kid sparked my interest in Monster & Myth. This thread reminded me of Mighty Max and i got a little bit nostalgic. And sparked my imagination what could have been.

Indeed. I drew a Max in a submarine, plane and pogostick, because in my headcanon Mighty Max is mich more like Super Mario Land. So i would really like a Max in a plane to fight flying monsters.

you are not wrong, that's what MM was he would have different things to achieve his goal. later playsets that had original sculpts related to the playset, like with a gun, sword, whip,, hammer, laser gun,e tc.

Im confident MM will never be rebooted and in the rare occurrence that it does it will be low effort with shitty playsets that would die after 1 wave, no marketing etc so it's better off dead. It reeks of the 90s too much anywho, and all those cool sculpting details the originals had would never be there because they were too violent and also required talent

From my research Mattel renewed the trademark. And the voice actor for Max kinda proposed a reboot.
And if you look at Polly Pocket they achieved a revival.

When they rebooted Micro Machines and Micro Machine Star Wars (Force Awakens), so many older fans were comparing the modern paint and sculpting and showing how super low budget and shit the quality was.

And this is also Mattel, who sits on properties like Dino Riders, Bravestarr, Captain Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, MUSCLE and Shogun Warriors just to name a few and do nothing with them.

Look what they did with Street Sharks and how they just pulled down that idea after it died on preorders

Trust me, you don't want a Nu-Might Max, it would be fucking terrible.

trademarks are renewed all the time because companies don't want to lose them, not because they actually plan to do anything with it, Nintendo has renewed the Eternal Darkness trademark for decades now and there's nothing to show for it, not even a rereelase.
Polly Pocket never really left the market, it became slightly bigger and was only out of toy shelves for a short period of time like 3 years in the mid 2010s, so it's always been in toy aisles for the past 30 years basically.
Voice Actors wanting something doesn't mean jackshit.
I mean I don't want to be a debbie downer, I'd love a kick ass MM reboot, but not only is it not going to happen based on the reasons above, if it were to happen it would suck ass.

Maybe Street Sharks is a too old IP and a side collection for some.
The toy has to be good, they pay for their main collection of Turtles or He-Man so much, that they need a good reason to spend it.
And i guess if you have an evergreen line of toys, maybe constant toys over years, you are more emotional connected to the line and buy bad stuff.
Like you see sport fns support their club even if they do bad or decide dumb stuff. Too deep in the rabbit hole.

Since its a previously dead line, they arent conditioned by continually collecting the line for years and thus accepting new gradual slights, so they react differently. The drama was they send out the samples to some Youtuber reviewers, of the bunch only Pixel Dan actually OWNED Street Sharks. He was honest and showed how they were out of scale, low quality and not worth the $75.

Preorders went up. No one fell for it. They needed at least 1000 units of each preordered, it was not even close.

Indeed. With something like Street Shark, you have to address nostalgia. If you dont put it in the toy-isle and advertise it to new kids.
As a collector thing, making concept characters is bold. Making them not visual fitting is dumb.
Even the Reaction line knows they have to make the main figures to lure fans in. And they play it on old vintagge Kenner style.

When Super7 licensed the Street Sharks IP for their MUSCLES line they sold so badly that they ended up at "5 Below" and other clear out stores. Street Sharks was mildly popular (and that's being nice) back in 1993, whatever fans exist today got their fix 25 years ago and have moved on.

Check for yourself by going on ebay. They weren't preorders, you bought them and they got shipped out immediately. You can see all of them being scalped on ebay with in-hand photos right now because they sold out. They're going for over $100 each

The original British version came with an extra vehicle and alien, which acted as part of the set's gimmick. The extra alien can sit in the cockpit of the vehicle, which can actually scoop up the Max figure. You can then attach it to the underside of the ship, and flip a hatch open inside and it'll automatically fire Max out of the vehicle as a projectile, which is intended to shoot him into a prison cell that's shaped like a mouth.

The US release for some reason fucked you out of the scavanger vehicle and the extra alien guy who was meant to sit inside it. I don't know why they gimped the set like that; if it was for cost savings or if it just didn't meet safety standards because it fired Max as a projectile.

Eh, when you have a trip people focus on you more, and as a result there's one or two trolls that really used to lose their mind over it. I usually take it off when I start a thread, and post toy news or interesting photos when I find it. I keep a sort of toy catalog on my laptop where I gather photos of different toys organized together, with sometimes notations that I make with links for my own references. I also sort the toys out sometimes. With MM I have things arranged as Best Sets and Disappointing Sets, the latter of which contains sets I feel are letdowns.

skull master mega head is a disappointment for me. There's only one new figure, Skull Master seems like a slight remold of the battle warriors, virgil/norman/max are the old sculpts, we only get one skeleton warrior, compare it to other "big" playsets, not even Skull Mountain but Magus, Dread Star, Dragon Island. The megahead doesn't have too many cool gimmicks either, it just opens up, and that's it, no trapped doors or anything of the like.

Nah, the teeth aren't vac. The shading is too soft. Vac-metal (as well as real polished metals) tend to form harder, harsher-edged reflections, with much brighter brights and darker darks. The skeleton's teeth are generally midrange, the brightest and darkest spots are both too dull. Also, when shot with flash, vac-metal highlights really blow out, like look at the MM logo on the forehead. If the teeth were vac, they wouldn't be nearly as clear and visible.

I'm not sure about the toxicity of the process, but--

1. Vac-metal is not very durable over time. As anyone who lived through the 90s can attest, vac metal figures quickly get chipped, scratched, and rubbed away.

2. The process can only be done on hard plastics, and those generally are not used too often in modern action figure production. Most companies use softer plastics nowadays for durability.

Without knowing the actual intricacies of the toy industry, my best guess it that it represented a change in how toys are made. In the 80s and 90s, most action figures were very simple, and didn't need a ton of moving parts. You could clamp two halves of a body together, sandwiching single-piece legs, arms, and head, and call it a day. With such simple construction, harder plastics and vac metalizing made sense. Now, with the softer PVC most companies are using, combined with the increasingly complex joint systems, it's getting harder and harder to manage.

Some may recall that there have been experiments with chroming super-articulated figures, like Microman for example. Accordingly, they rubbed/chipped like hell, and Microman's hard plastic is none too durable either.

Also forgot to mention, you can't control how people use their figures. You can recommend them for display, sure, but people will inevitably want to play/pose because they're toys. You need to make sure that your figure can stand up to that.

Well yeah I was just speaking of how a collector would handle the figure. Obviously for a kid playing with the figure it is expected the vacmetal will deteriorate. For example, I would hope if I got the Flying Fists Heman from MOTU Origins, which is one of the few modern vacmetal figures, I wouldn't run into much chipping or the like due to it mostly just being displayed.

The guts aren't part of the head, though - the guts are more or less symmetrical with the ones on the opposite side, which, along with all the other organic detailing on the walls and floor of the set, implies they're part of the Mega Skull itself, and the tiny severed head is just lying on top of them.

I think this is a much better set than he gives it credit for, and it's original British version with it's scavenger vehicle really adds to it.

I also find the Maneater set to be disappointing, because there's not much to do on the inside of it when you open it up. It has a ship interior that takes up a lot of space when you open it, and when you retract the interior the insides are pretty bare. I was also never a fan of the squids it came with, even as a kid, because the set shows a shark, but here we get squids and no shark inside. Instead you're meant to use the set as just a vehicle really. Comparatively the Nautilus set is also a submarine themed playset and has a lot to do on the inside. He calls the Maneater the best of series 2, but I think both Cyclops and Dinolab are better, and even Scorpion is better for that matter and Scorpion is almost barren on the inside.

You can get close airbrushing Alclad Chrome. But be warned, it's not a simple process. 9/10s of chrome paintjobs are surface and under-layer preparation. You first need to sand your surface until it's smooth as silk, or it will ruin the effect. Hit it with the shiniest gloss black you can get, then wait for it to fully cure. Then apply numerous light coats of Alclad Chrome, waiting for it to dry in between. Do not use any topcoat other than Alclad Aqua Gloss, or you will ruin the effect.

You can also take a cheap shortcut by just using Molotow Chrome ink. It's not nearly as nice, but it gives a semi-chromey look fast. The only downside is, you will not be able to touch the toy after that without degrading the shininess with every touch. I mean, it just takes a bit of critical thinking. There's a bunch of organic detailing on the sets walls and various parts, so we know the whole set is at least partially organic (not dissimilar to several other Mighty Max sets). So the 'guts' being part of the set itself - hence why they're much too big to belong to the head or any of the characters included. As for the head itself - that sticker is under part of the dungeon area that is filled with skulls and bones; what's more, we see in >>9367762 that there's also a severed hand and foot lying right next to the head on the very same sticker, presumably from the same person. So why on earth would Skull Master have a doll head lying in a pile of chopped up body parts in his dungeon? Isn't the more likely answer that it's a real human head?

Why a doll head? An easter egg and part of to make it more creepy. Because a doll implies there were kids in this dungeon.
And why i thought it is a doll head is, because the design looks more like a lego minifigure. Look at the printed skulls how detailed they are with shape and nasal holes. Or look at >>9367776 how detailed the girl is. Thats a barbarian woman.
So i thought it is a creepy leftover doll head.
I dont deny a severed head makes more sense, it was just my first thought of the design.

I feel like there's just nothing going on on the inside of Maneater compared to the other Doomzones. It would be better as a Monster Head due to the lack of play features inside.

Once you open up the Maneater you get this ship piece that comes down as a plate on the inside, and it takes up all the space.

I can't help but feel that the main thing the set has going for it is the cool exterior. I had the set as a kid and I bought it solely because of the cool shark with blood on it's teeth. I was always disappointed that it had squids instead of sharks, given the shark exterior, and that you couldn't really play around on the inside of it.

And those are my big issues with the set and why I feel it's a disappointing one compared to sets like "Outwits the Cyclops," or "Crushes the Hand." And even weak compared to other vehicle sets like "Wolfship," which is itself a bit bland but has more play value, and weak compared to "Fly" and "Nautilus," both of which also have more play value.

Oh yea, - that's most definitely a blonde chick's severed head. Also, from looking more closely at the organic details on the walls, the skeletons and amazon chick being pinned to them, and those cocoons on the ceiling...it reminds me a bit of a Xenomorph nest, where people are being cocooned to and absorbed into the walls of the set itself. Like the dungeon is slowly eating its prisoners and converting them into parts of itself...creepy. Also, isn't that the same face thing in the back that was on Dragon Island? I never owned this particular set, so I don't know the story behind it.

I watched some play throughs of the video game. Honestly it really shows you that it came towards the end. It seems they stopped working and just pupkished it.

That game was a stinker. It was clearly rushed as evidenced by the fact that there's barely any gameplay, and what's there is super repetitive. I remember owning the game when it came out and never beating it, because it was all about collecting parts and carrying them back to a portal all in identical levels.

I actually finished binge watching the series recently. It's infuriating how most of the series is only available in such low quality. A few of the episodes for season 2 are so blury that it's hard to watch them. I was inspired tho to purchase a Dragon Island playset recently. I just gotta purchase a few more parts to complete the set. It's insane trying to find one with no paint ware, particularly on the teeth for the beach portion, and has the Mighty Max logo with it's vac-metal intact, along with working lights. The one I got looks pretty decent, but it has a bit of paint ware from play, and a slight scuff to the vac-metal.

Funny is that you can see that they invested work in it. The graphics are decent. A handfull different enemies for every level area. Mighty Max can shoot, crouch, carry, throw and push things. You got levers, ballons and teeter-tootzer to move objects.
But than every level in the level area looks the same. All enemies are kinda the same, just some can fly and shot. No Level boss. No Skullmaster fight.
It came out ´94, guess at that point Bluebird knew that they wont continue it. So Ocean rushed to publish it to gain at least production costs back.

Thats the Hot Wheels Adventure line. 6 vehicles that were transformable playsets. They tried to make their own Micromachines playsets with the knowledge they had from Mighty Max.

Thats why i thought it was Jazware. I didnt saw there was a license thing going.
But why isnt Hasbro confident with their IP? I mean when Jazware thinks they can make money and are interested in licensing, doesnt this mean Hasbro could make more money than just the licensing?

Hasbro did Micro Machine Star Wars Force Awakens during that hype fest and they sold badly so from their view, if Star Wars didn't move Micro Machines with kids or collectors why would a micro Porsche or Honda.

If Jazware is willing to pay them for the license and take all the risk of tooling and manufacturing, Hasbro is happy to cash the check

I opened it back then. It was too much fun to release it from its box in pristine shape and with the baggies still sealed, felt like I was a kid again. Really surprised when I saw that the eyes were tiny incandescent light bulbs instead of leds.

As a playset it seems expensive in what you get for your buck. Even for a minifigure i guess it was too expensive.
But if you see it as a small diorama or a decorative movie character head it can be ok.
Other guess is that you get a special character that is hidden in a big more expensive set?
But i think these small bucks head never sold that well. Otherwise why would Galoob pack them in 3-packs or here >>9397927 in a 7-pack. Bluebird did something similar, they put the small heads in a 2-pack or as a free one in a doomzone.
I think what they tried with the Dread Heads/Scalps was a good idea. To really make them accessoires you can clip on something. But in my eyes they were bad in that way that they were just boxes with a Max.

Never knew they had such huge bundles for this. I'd think in today's market they'd be less likely to bundle stuff available individually like this since it'd only make the bundle more likely to shelfwarm in stores due to the price

I for one am interested. Mighty Max discussion is always cool, and there are lots of pocket lines that haven't been discussed at length yet. I'm also interested in furthering the discussion on homemade/3D printed playsets of this type, I think that's an untapped well.
