Probably a bit of both. The fact that Talking Heads had a song called Psycho Killer seems like it'd be a bit of an influence, especially since TH's largely dealt with how media and popculture affect society and the Joker in TDR is a commentary on pop psychology sympathizing and glamorizing a lunatic killer.

Yes, if you wanted a highly paid skilled sculptor hired by a professional studio you would buy high end figures.

If you want a cheap figure, that occasionally has an ok sculpt, you get McFarlane. This isn't the McFarlane of 20 years ago that was putting out great sculpts at ridiculously low prices.

Lots of B and C tier characters are popular and had good book sales. Almost every DC cartoon has gotten good ratings, even when made up of B and C listers

Problem is that Mattel ruined the license for everyone and WB/ATT are also running their property into the ground by allowing clueless gits handle their characters.

One of the reasons given to the GL:TAS series being canceled is because toy sales were poor. ... GL movie toy sales were poor, which meant they couldn't make any GL:TAS toys.
And then Cartoon Network moved the DC Nation cartoon block around, because they didn't like that they got any royalties from those DC cartoons. Which led to DC Nation being canceled. Basically the same reason why the original Teen Titans and Justice League cartoons were canceled.

Honestly I don't think it's quite Mattel's fault exclusively. I think it's more to do with WB running the property into the ground like you said. I feel like they're actively trying to kill the DC brand and that extends far beyond toys and into comics. Ironically they're imposing the kind of overreach that people were afraid Disney was going to do to Marvel when they purchased the brand. of course it's not EXCLUSIVELY Mattel's fault, but what they produced helped nothing and actually helped poison the well.

Check out the GI Joe line right now, where the Snake Eyes movie was a bug in the road, yet the toyline itself was selling so well that it's hard to find on toyshelves.

The fact is that Mattel squandered all the good will they had in the early DCUC days and every DC property was hurt. Mattel did nothing to help every DC property that came and went on TV, streaming services, and theaters.
There were so many Direct to DVD cartoons released that sold fairly well, but where were all the toylines? Mattel couldn't capitalize on that shit.
How about all the cartoons that came and went? Without toy sales, they were destined to fail, especially since Cartoon Network striped away ad sales as much as possible. So of course those cartoon series were cut short and led to the failure of DC being able to make series to grow the popularity of their characters.

Obviously, WB itself is at fault too for all their stinkers, but there were popular series nonetheless.
So many avenues that could have popularized and made DC characters known was squandered for a decade because of Mattel's failures.

Mezco is knee-capped by the no-guns rule too, since those are without a doubt their best accessories.

Also they tend to have "meh" articulation, so characters that should pose dynamic from them, just don't. None of their Batmen can crunch at the waist for example.

Mattel wasn't very good, but I was really liking their character choices in the last few year. I started being interested in DC in the early 2000s so a lot of the retro pics and designs in DCUC didn't interest me, especially coming off DC S3 which had a much more modern styling to it. I wish McFarlane was doing more stuff like the last few DC Multiverse waves and now a bunch of AU Batman characters.

No, because action figures are toys and toys are supposed to be for kids.
The only reason collector toys exist today is because of McFarlane deciding to start his own toy company and produce toys that he also liked, hence raising the standards that most toy company copied and directly selling to the consumer.
The only funny thing about this is the fact that childrens toy companies are able to produce toys that satisfy collectors who also buy pricier collector lines.

A lot of this is I think down to artistic choices and down to unique sculptors/designers. One sculptor or designer may hit on something over at McFarlane that no sculptor at the high end lines do, either by accident or by general savviness. There are definitely some old McFarlane toys that

1. I can't believe were ever sold for like 9.99 or 12.99
and 2. are better than many collectors items put out at $50-80 today which is far over just inflation and production costs increasing

That was a WB specific thing, not just a general idea that cartoons that don't sell toys are failures. WB's spent the last decade and a half running DC into the ground with unrealistic ideas of how successful something should be, and how that success is measured. Most of those shows that failed to sell toys and were considered bombs, were never given toys to sell. WB never made it happen then blamed them for its failure.

They have more of a standing shelf presence than MLs, GI Joes, TFs, and SW. At least in my stores. I haven't had a SW restock in ages. I haven't seen an ML on the shelf in 2 months at 2 of my local Targets, meanwhile the same Joker and Batmen keep sitting in the shelf. That's not even including the wall of WW84 shit rotting over by the NECA section.

This absolutely is not true. Stores were absolutely flooded with the last few years of Mattel product. The McFarlane stuff is constantly selling and being restocked. I've never had an easier time finding new product. If anything, it's been mostly empty pegs and disappointment waiting for the new assortments lately.

Fair enough. In my area I have the same handful of Batmen and Jokers sitting in the shelf. I get new assortments in but they don't get restocked due to the copious amounts of stuff already in the shelf. I was surprised to see Darkseid from the Snyder Cut sit for a few weeks. Almost bought him several times before deciding I wanted a more classic look.

DC had something phenomenal in Super Sons. That could have been a never cartoon to run on CN or HBO Max. Superman's son and Batman's son get in hijinks around the DCU is a concept that could have been milked at the macro pop-culture for decades, and they could not help but fuck themselves over by ruining it as an exploitable IP damn near as soon as fucking possible.

Mulletman's hair isnt long enough and i dont think he comes with a gun. ( couldve also come with the wet long hair alt head)
JPV bat's helmeted head is too defined, his nose and iirc you can kind of see his mouth. The mask shouldnt have those details be so heavy imo. And the shoulders are wrong. It looks like spikes glued on the the shoulder instead of the armor seamlessly turning into a point. Otherwise he wouldve been awesome.
Cyborg supes uses the hush supes as a base. Dumb. His S doesnt have the cyborg half be black/metallic like in the comics. He couldve come with a jawless head to recreate the final battle with black suit supes. Shouldve come with an american flag and a gunhand with a smoke plume to recreate Superman #79 cover.

I hope they make the rest of the supermen though. Maybe theyll turn out better.

If you pick up a small ML that has good poseability it will feel better than an unwieldy larger figure with worse posability. Posability really helps. That said some MLs fail in posability and some McFarlanes succeed in it, but 6 vs 7 inch isnt a huge deal

The main thing that killed Mattel's DC Classic line was the New 52

DC decided to be cunts and ordered a contract change that went into effect forcing Mattel and other licensers to only use the New 52 versions of the DC Universe characters. If they were not in the New 52 they could not be made and EVERYONE had to be made in their New 52 costume.

Mattel was pissed the fuck off, and barely managed to get DC to let them release a bunch of figures that were supposed to be part of a wave of figures (Red Robin and Superboy Prime) as a stopgap wave but DC ordered the figures not to get a wide release, so they were impossible to find.

THEN DC backstabbed Mattel, by churning out a ton of DC Direct New 52 figures and cited the fact that because Mattel balked on switching to do New 52 stuff only, they couldn't make New 52 stuff. DC DID throw them a bone however, in the form of allowing them greater access to media properties; leading to them getting the toy rights to the CW shows (Flash, Green Arrow, and Supergirl) along with throwing them a bone letting them do Dark Knight Returns figures to tie-in with the cartoon adaptation of the story, along with doing a 4 inch line based on the Batman Arkham video games and the Burton Batman movies.

Sadly, DC and Mattel fucked up AGAIN because truthfully? NO ONE FUCKING WANTED DARK KNIGHT RETURNS figures. Battle Armor Batman and Carrie Kelly Robin (along with CW Supergirl) didn't sell PERIOD and pretty much killed DC's new revamped 6 inch line as stores over ordered the Dark Knight wave and they sat on shelves for YEARS unbought, causing the other waves with CW figures people WANTED to be outright impossible to find.

At this point, shit was going bad, super fucking bad. New 52 toys weren't selling for DC and Mattel was pissed; so a deal was struck: DC allowed Mattel to re-issue non-52 JLA toys under the Super Friends banner, along with letting them do a direct to consumer sub club of Non-New 52 DC characters. They also got the rights to do movie figures for the JL/Wonder Woman movie but they also fucking flopped.

Shit got so bad that DC finally caved and let them go back to doing regular waves ala DCUC, though using the DC Rebirth redesigns. We got several great waves but again, because the movie and Batman DKR waves fucked shit up, a lot of places didn't order them and finally Mattel said "fuck it" and let the license lapse.
