Ditto, I hate being a CADfag because it's more fun when I can autistically touchy feelie my pieces.
Speaking of mata style, I went back and rebuilt an old moc. Tried using CCBS for the first time and also attempted adding fingers. I like how it looks even if the legs will have odd articulation and the arms are in black despite me wanting to make them gray. If I can try making a mold and making a yellow bootleg for the mata torso that'd be good, that or I finally consider giving her a proper element. What do you think?

If I had to guess, the original sin was trying to take the cold, robotic toy designs and rework them into something warmer and more amicable (more organic and expressive) to the general public.

In fact the Rahkshi and Vahki, which aren't remotely warm or amicable, got IMHO some of the best designs in the movies.

Yeah the legs feel too short even without the armour, I would personally probably replace the thigh pieces with either 90617 or 90609, even the slightly longer 90611 feels a little too short. >>9379824 is right in that it looks more like a big Matoran.

I disagree, I think the Kaukau looks great and should have been the baseline for how all the other masks looked. She managed to be plenty expressive with only her eyes and didn't need a mouth or eyebrows to emote with. Most of the masks for the non-speaking characters like Macku looked pretty good as well, since they didn't even bother adding the humanoid facial features.

There aren't any "rules" to combining CCBS with G1, other than "can you make them work together without clashing?" Really the only obstacle when it comes to using CCBS is the armor shells, which are very straight and smooth compared to the greebled look of G1 armor. The G2 Uniters worked pretty well because they used several G1 and Technic parts in combination with CCBS. The shells were kept to a minimum and they had several new armor pieces that fit CCBS but look more like the classic G1 style.

They're the same size overall. The one thing I'd avoid is putting the friction extenders on older sockets, but other than that things seems fine. The used hordika and glatorian necks interchangeably with G2 CCBS so I see no reason the others can't work.

As someone who built a Tahu with CCBS before, the balljoint at the hip is higher than the balljoint of a standard Mata set. Think of how they use a hand piece that the leg then clips into, while your moc is directly attaching to the torso. Use the same bone as the shin bone and it'll be roughly the same height as an 01 Toa.

Normally I'd think not, but I did end up with some hairline cracks on a G2 head connected to a Hordika neck. Not sure if it's from the pieces themselves or some outside factor though.

Ew. Bohrok limbs do not look good as an upper arm. As a general rule of thumb pre-bent limbs like the Mata, Nuva, Bohrok or Av-Toran limbs look fucking mutant when used with another piece to make a functioning limb. At the very least 'straighten' the piece out first by bulking up the negative space so it doesn't look like a deliberate bend.

I would recommend using a Metru Forearm piece as the upper arm instead.

There's a way to make Tanma legs look good enough for a shin by filling out the back of it with some technic beams and Inika/Piraka thigh armor on top, but that's the only one I've seen so far that 'bulks' out the piece.

There's been a few Krekka mocs that give him Mata legs as the bicep area which don't look bad either.

Agree to some point with the Rahkshi even if they could be improved imo.
But the Vahki look like shit compared to their set equivalents, and they didn't even feel threatening unlike in the flash animations partly because they were manlets. And yes I know sets were also short but isn't an excuse since the 04 titans were upscaled and are like twice as big as the Toa in the movies

Overall not really worth it, but at least now I have a third Takanuva that I can scrap for parts, and Tuma that I'm not impressed by. He's not a fancy torso (like Axonn/Hydraxon), but he has a permanent hunch and a permanent slouch.
Also dislike how essentially every large 08+ set uses the exact same hip and double shoulder setup.

Friend, we're both retards. But at any rate, I'm well aware that the Toa Onewa set has dark blue eyes- not to be confused with the lighter blue that toa of ice often have.
With this in mind, in the film, BIONICLE 2: Legends of Metru Nui, Toa Onewa is depicted with bright orange eyes and heartlight. Given that the setting of the image is the Dark Hunter Prison from the film, I found that orange emmissive areas would be fitting. Note the presence of the set-inaccurate (and truthfully, impossible) heartlight in the model's chest.

There have been tons of Bionicle happy meal toys but the Tohunga were the only good ones. It seems weird that they completely abandoned the building aspect of it after the first try and opted for barely-poseable figures without compatibility with the sets. Especially considering how hugely successful the Tohunga were; I remember every kid having them and I know a lot of people today who still remember them (which is more than you can say about 99% of happy meal toys).
I guess it just shows how important brand recognition is; people will buy something just because it has a logo they recognize, even if it's not a good representation of the original product. Still though, would it have killed them to have continued to make happy meal toys with at least one actual Bionicle piece? They could have easily had something with recolors of existing Kanohi a la the Tohunga with a buildable cardboard stand, for example. The funny thing is, there were some Lego Racers happy meal toys in 2009 with a few real System pieces. Even the weird hockey ones could attach Lego bricks to them.
Sorry for the autistic rant but I spend a lot of time thinking about wasted potential.

I do seem to recall something about that. Not sure how much of a fuss was actually put up about them; could have easily just been an excuse made up by McD's (or Lego's) PR department because they weren't cheap enough to produce. There's also the other Lego toys I mentioned that seemingly didn't have the same problem.

Money could play the part. Keep in mind that with Tohunga, only the disc was existing part, and good chunk of those were never used for anything else. You could also consider Maku, who didn't have recolored Kaukau, but I don't think transparent plastic was that much more expensive when compared to other parts.

My theory with Macku's Huna is that they didn't have any recolors they could have done the Kaukau in. If you look at the Tohunga, they each share one color with their respective Toa plus one new color. The only exception is Macku, who has the same colors as Gali because there weren't any remaining colors that hadn't already been used on the other Tohunga. So instead they opted for a different mask entirely in blue, which you couldn't get from the mask packs.

The only reason that I can think of is that LEGO didn't want to make new color mold for Medium Blue Tohunga Feet and decided to change his look just because they already had dark gray feet from Boxor set.

I think it's probably because they didn't want kids to get confused as to what Kohlii team he was on, since the two Ga-Matoran were already blue. And probably the mold thing too, since all the other 03 Matoran had feet in existing colors.

By the way, you can make Kapura and Taipu from existing pieces
However in case of others I think the problem was that Kongu /Tamaru and Taipu/Onepu used different body colors
also Taipu looks almost the same as Hafu
also all Onu Matorans use Pakari

Based on that theory, I assume that is also why a Ga-Matoran character wearing a Kaukau wasn't introduced until year 2 with Hahli. Perhaps they couldn't get the color of her mask right in '01 or producing a transparent mask for a free toy in large quantities would have thrown the Happy Meal budget out of balance.
All other Happy Meal Tohunga had masks corresponding to their Toa, except Macku. Each village in '01 also had two "sets" of named Tohunga, the six from the Happy Meals (Macku, Jaller, Hewkii, Kongu, Onepu, Matoro) and six secondary ones (Kotu, Kapura, Hafu, Tamaru, Taipu, Kopeke). No other Tohunga was given a name back then, even Takua was nameless until the very end of '01. Ga-Koro's secondary named Tohunga was Kotu who almost never appeared in any media and was sidelined when Hahli appeared. Hahli even got a set in '01 while Kotu didn't. The plot of MNOG II was also about this newcomer Ga-Matoran with a lighter-blue Kaukau who we never saw in '01 suddenly taking over Kotu's place.
So I imagine the plan for a Kaukau-wearing blue Tohunga model already existed in '01, but they just couldn't produce it, and so they gave other types of masks to Macku and Kotu. By the time they did find a way to produce the Kaukau in an altered blue color for the upcoming '03 line, they hastily invented Hahli, pushed her into the story and shoved Kotu aside.

I'd argue they at least got their shit together by the third film. I'd prefer more set accurate stuff overall but the hordika, the rahaga and the visorak were all pretty spot on. I'll give early Miramax credit for looking more professional than whatever 20 cent budget legend reborn was working with. I loved collecting Kraata as a kid since they were supposed to be little independent creatures on top of being accessories. I was aware they had powers but I just assumed they gave the Rahkshi they inhabited whatever power they were associated with.
I had no idea they each only worked with one Rahksh in canon until recently. What was the decision making process here? It just means a majority of Kraata have nothing to inhabit. Seems like such an arbitrary thing to decide.

It's probably because the Rahkshi don't have any powers other than the one from the Kraata, unlike the Bohrok which had elemental powers based on the shell that could be mixed and matched with different Krana. So if you allowed any Kraata to go into any type of Rahkshi, it would essentially make the different colors meaningless.
Personally I think the smart solution would have been to say Kraata + Energized Protodermis makes a "generic" Rahkshi armor that then shapeshifts slightly depending on what is piloting it, but maybe they didn't want to do that because shapeshifting is already one of the 42 powers.

Thanks for that. After downsizing considerably last year for a move, I'm working on rebuilding some and seeing what new ones I can find.
Recent acquisitions have brought me a lot of duplicates and some nice new ones like the Bahrag and Jetrax.

For Christmas 2005, kid me decided he wanted the playsets, instead of like, real sets. I got the ram and tower, and they do have some cool parts, but the coolest I ended up losing so it’s a sore subject.
Then with the money I got on Christmas I got the Visorak Gate. A set that didn’t even have any cool parts whatsoever.
Mortifying to think that for what those 3 sets cost I could have gotten all 3 2005 titans, the four Piraka I never got, and still had money left over.

Currently in the process of rebuilding Axonn and Brutaka, have to go through bricklink to fill in some gaps since I'm using some of their parts for mocs. I'm definitely rebuying Lhikan and Kikanalo at some point, same for another Keetongu + Roodaka so I can have TSO exist with them simultaneously.

They aren't really any more expensive than they were. The biggest cost is just the import from Russia, but other than that you're looking probably around $20 or so. It's about the same I paid back in 2016.

How the fuck tohunga arm is supposed to stay on boxor's back without it being damaged?
The piece has to be bent at over 180 degrees and the arm has also has square edge on the other side, making it even harder to attach the thing

Yeah I have it, and yeah it damage the arm over time. Mine was brand new a few years back though so thankfully the issue hasn't happened since I took it apart. Definitely something that one should be cautious with and probably could be modded into a better solution.

Buying used is like whatever. I doubt anyone really hot glues their Bonkle. From 06 to the end the joints can and in some cases will crack, so keep that in mind. As far as feedback goes, as long as positives outweigh the negatives, you're good to go. Just be sure to always read the terms, so you don't end up with surprise feed. Most sellers describe the stuff, and some use actual photos. It never hurts to ask.

/biog/, what are the biggest armor/weapon pieces out there? Mostly no, this is a from-scratch frame I planned out in LDD and then made some minor adjustments to when building it for real so I could use the rubber sockets instead of what I'd had in place in the software, and fix the feet since the ones in this image didn't quite work out. I did borrow an idea or two from that frame, most obviously the choice to articulate the torso with pistons, but there aren't any direct copies of that frame's structure here. Currently this clocks in at a bit over 2 feet tall and stands and poses great without any stands/help, and if I'm right about my assessment of the joint strength, it'll continue to stand on its own just fine even with more weight on it.

you're reading an implication that isn't here, someone thinking "this is not X" does not mean they thought it was X beforehand. the only physical-detail implications we get here are that she looked like a 'person' to him ("the figure") as opposed to a rahi or some such, she was visually clearly a woman, and she didn't have a mask; none of this implies her body looked like a toa, or that she was the height of a toa, or anything else like that

The original idea for Keetongu was that he'd be a King Kong-like giant even compared to characters like Roodaka and Sidorak, so in that scenario it would make sense for Matoran to categorize him as a type of beast, since most of the truly giant creatures they knew were also Rahi. The size of the set doesn't reflect that idea though.
Keetongu also lead a reclusive life in the wilderness without interacting with society, he mostly spoke a language Matoran didn't understand and faded into myth over the years, essentially making him the Matoran version of a cryptid. I guess even after he was discovered, he didn't mind that he was still labeled as a Rahi, probably because he didn't care about labels.

I know this sounds stupid, but they really could've explored during 2005 the different districts of Metru Nui. What I mean is that they always show it as just green fog and ripped up buildings, despite the fact that each metru is suppose to be distinctly different from each other. I would've been cool to have seen different ways in which the city was decaying. Ta-Metru factories rusting with massive holes in the walls and fire slowly fizzling out; Le-Metru and it's deteriorating pipelines and tunnels; Po-Metru and eroded statues, etc.

If you think about it, Hunters like Devastator, Vengeance, Gladiator, Darkness, Eliminator, Tracker, Spinner, Subterranean and Savage all seem to be taller than The Shadowed One.
Although I'm making this assumptions based on the wiki images, there isn't a picture where all the Dark Hunters are aligned in a height chart line.

Shadowed One is about the same size as Voporak and Sidorak, so he is the size of an average Dark Hunter. That does make him kinda small compared to some of the larger models.But that's how it is when you have teenagers designing canon models, some of them are just unreasonably big

Good point, but there's no part where it specifies that working with the hunters have in any way been uncomfortable to them, check Phantom for example, who has to be sent to certain missions because of his moral compass, you could argue that Prototype is just too stupid to realize what's going on and Savage is agressive because of the Visorak venom, but maybe Spinner just needed a little push. We know Nidhiki's story

If you're interested, there's an RP blog called "Dark-Hunters-Inc" on tumblr, as cringe as that sounds, they are the only source of writing that cover the Dark Hunters in depth, with some nice and edgy stories

So I've been longing to make some accounts to upload my creations and general toy pics, but I've been scared to get my foot in the door. I've noticed some creators I follow primarily use Flickr, Insta, maybe a TTV account, and Custom Bionicle Wiki, and they seem to simply copy/paste the same uploads amongst the different sites, more or less. Would this be an okay way to start putting my work out there? It's just for the sake of sharing my enjoyment of the hobby. I'd also be using the Insta and Flickr for my general toy pics I think. Any tips/advice you guys could give?

In the same way that Roodaka's Mutation Rhotuka reflects her mentality of deals and exchanges (the greatest crime a Vortixx can commit on Xia is to make a deal that does not turn a profit, with the punishment being execution on the spot), TSO's Madness Rhotuka, too reflects his own mindset regarding others.

I can't really say why, I guess it has mostly to do with the fact that we don't see much of her, and like Lariska, we can fill some holes of her personality with our own thoughts. You can also argue that the fact this was written by a fan instead of Greg helped a lot, for you can really bring down the personality of most of the females as a "dominatrix-esque character".
Varian just feels different, there is a more feminine approach with her, the fact that combat missions seemed to hard for her and being less battle-hardy than she'd like to admit just gives some kind of vibe I feel female character are missing in today's media.

CBW and TTV are a lot more close-knit+story focused imo, but is also a decent place to actually get feedback. flickr and insta thrive off of constant posting; up to you if that's shit. I also hate insta conceptually. overall just do it because worst case you still get people looking at your shit

I wish there were more orange masks that really work well on Metru heads. The Hau still fits the rest of his greebly surface, so I think it works.

Love your work anon. As a pointer to improve your pics though, try experimenting with the legs a bit when you pose your Toa. Try having one weight bearing leg, or just shift the feet a little more apart and angled slightly outward. Straight up and down makes them look a bit stiff. Mocs are still top notch though.

I live in Germany. The Ruhr area was very big in coal mining and steel industry, so at some places there are still remains. Some of them get preserved, but this particular one you can't get inside of. I'm hoping to return to a complex a few cities over soon to take more pictures. It's much more accessable and I can take shots like pic related.

GoBricks, they're pretty good. I have Technic and System parts from them and I plan to order more in the future. It really helps to get rid of grey mixel joints, plue pins and what not. You can really clean up your colour schemes by getting fitting axles and pins.
It's not 100% like lego, sometimes there is too much friction imo.
