==ZAKU GROUPBUILD==

Build and customize a mobile suit from the Zaku family in any way you can imagine! Any suit that has the word "Zaku" in its name is fair game, meaning you can use any of the following:
>Standard UC Zakus such as the Zaku I or Zaku II
>Variants such as the Act Zaku, Desert Zaku, Zaku Tank, etc
>ZAKU Warriors and their variants from the Cosmic Era
>SD Zakus
This means you cannot use the following for the main part of your build
>Other Zeon/ZAFT mobile suits (ie: Goufs, Gelgoogs, GINNs)
>Zaku expies from the Universal Century (HiZack, Geara Doga, Den'an Zon, etc)
>Zaku equivalents from other Gundam timelines (Leos, Grazes, Borjanons, etc)
You can still source parts from other kits for your builds, but the basis of your entry has to be at least 50% Zaku (ie: Swapping out the bottom half of a Zaku II with a Dom to make a Zaku II High Mobility Test Type would be acceptable, but throwing a Zaku head onto a Dom won't cut it). The 50% limitation refers only to the body itself, you're free to do what you wish with your suit's equipment.

Send all photos (Both WIPs and Finished photos, with multiple angles/poses) and a short description of your build to [email protected] once you're finished. Additionally, please state whether your home board is /m/ or /toy/ when you're submitting your entry. This information will remain private and won't be referenced with submissions, I just want to know which /gpg/ each entry represents.

This is pretty good, especially if you've never done traditional model kits before.
You do need a better lighing setup for your photography and to make it easier on the auto-exposure system you might want to use a slightly darker background :-)

If you're not doing the HDR thing, camera sensors can't expose bright whites and dark details at the same time. Either you get overblown background and properly exposed subject or properly exposed background and underexposed dark subject.

shit I actually sort of like the overblown whites except for the fringing, but yes too much contrast currently, doesn't help that everything is being lit by 3 fucking flashes and boosting up the shadows too much just makes the entire image look unnatural. pic related is directly out of camera.
gonna try out some textured backdrops I got laying around later, yours looks nice by the way.

I was fiddling around with this thing I built a while back 'cause I was annoyed by how much like a riding lawnmower it looked. Slapped GA tank treads on it; still doesn't look like an ATV but at least it isn't a John Deere any more. The new legs make his arms looks really scrawny now though so I'm going to have to do something to bulk 'em up.

After 3 months, it's finally time to showcase the Zakus from the Groupbuild!

First up is a pretty straightforward Char's Zaku II using The Origin mold. Built by a certain Gelgoog Guy, he matte coat really gives it that war machine vibe.

The MS-05B Zaku I Atmospheric Operations Test Unit was a short-lived experimental unit Zeon was developing that was quickly scrapped when it was decided the Zaku I was not adequate as a mainline unit. It was equipped with an winged pack and heavy thrusters mounted to the back of the legs. This makes it capable of extended atmospheric flight and advanced aerial maneuvering. The pack is mounted with a pair of Zaku machineguns as well as rockets or micro-missile pods. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, Gabby Hazard was deployed to the North American front and was assigned a customized Zaku II FS. Created with one objective in mind, the MS-06C Jabber Zaku II was hastily thrown together by a pilot with very little self regard. The result was the Jabber Zaku, an MS-06 C-type with additional manoeuvrability and almost all armour replaced by lightweight alloy. Even the standard armament Zaku Machine Gun was cut down, reducing its range drastically.
The Jabber's main weapon, though, was its devastating pile-bunker, built into the same array as the gun. Equipped with only one napalm-embedded javelin per sortie, the pilot was to get to the bridge of the hostile warship with as little engagement as possible. Slamming the front of the weapon against the glass triggered the sensor, launching the javelin and eliminating the enemy command in a blaze of fire.
This glass cannon approach wasn't intended to last long, and it didn't. With a handful of kills to its name, the Jabber was unsurprisingly destroyed in action during the One Year War.

They will need glue. You can also use N scale railroad buildings. Theyre 1/150 so close enough. Think for mg it was ho scale or 3mm scale. Check for outland models, prezza and some if the railroad shit.

You're complaining about the color of paint he chose for the build? I get where you're coming from by saying the paintjob on the others aren't super that good, but if that's all you have to say regarding the Psycho Zaku then you're just nitpicking at that point. It's a clean paintjob where the only immediate flaw I can notice when looking over the larger image of it are 1 or 2 stray seams.

I'm thinking this was an attempt at candy coat that he botched and then covered up with flat topcoat last minute but he hit everything with it including the gold verniers that should have just been regular metallic.

I don't usually butt into these sorts of conversations, but considering you guys have been arguing about this for the better part of this thread, I feel like I should say something on the matter. I wasn't trying to "make the /toy/ thread into the /m/ thread" or anything along those lines when I brought the groupbuild to both boards this time around. The main reasons were 1) Bring a groupbuild to these threads again since the last one here ended around December/January or so & 2) to see how builders from both sides of the site handle the same challenge/prompts.

I don't do these builds out of a desire to see super high quality builds meant for GBWCs, but rather to get people's imaginations flowing and to let people try new building/painting techniques (Which is why I prefer to go for themes that are more open ended than say "Build something super specific in a hyper specific colorscheme"). It's normal for me to receive a bunch of builds from people who are submitting their very first custom (Be it their first time painting or their first time kitbashing), and in the case of this build I got new builders from both /m/ and /toy/. Overall, I do these to encourage people to build and share their progress on their buillds and encourage discussion in threads. That "argument" I mentioned you guys having is the exact sort of discourse I like to see after posting the entries for the build. Moreso the "This build is good/bad because of X/Y" rather than the "X builders are better than Y builders"

Whatever the next theme ends up being will be open to participants from both boards again. The duration might bump back up to 3 1/2-4 months though, depends on what theme gets voted on.

If anything, these threads got slower over the last few months with new threads being made every 10 days or so instead of the 4-7 it took earlier in the year if a quick glance at the archive is anything to go by.

While I agree that /m/ were being retarded in your example, I have to ask why you'd post your work in the /m/ thread when /toy/ is also competing. Choosing to post your work there not only exposed it to harsh (and sometimes unwarranted) criticism, but also skews people's perception slightly to make them think that all the entries are coming from one board.

The /m/ thread devolved into discussions about whatever series was the shit post topic of the day. SD BB Senshi Nu Gundam and Sazabi. I added in SDCS frame components and styrene spacers to get the proportions I wanted then painted them and added stickers from the RG kits before sealing them in a clear varnish.

If you want to build these, ignore the SD EX-standard line versions. Those have far less detail, no working fin funnels, wimpy single part weapons and gaping holes that show up on the finished models.

Varies depending on what kind of color scheme I'm doing. Generally I'll separate pieces into different boxes/areas of a box for different colors. I also tend to use a separate styrofoam block for different colors if I have a lot. If it's just a few pieces at a time I just sorta know what's what.

I build my models without instructions most of the time so I just have an innate understanding of how everything goes together. This makes it easy when I separate everything into piles based on color to spray. I use tiny spray clips with metal arms to hold the parts while they're being painted and a large square of pluck foam to set them into while drying.

I usually paint in batches based on colour so I don't have to clean my airbrush multiple times. for example if the main kit is grey I'll paint grey, then mask and paint the orange sections at the same time as painting the orange parts
if it's an MG with a full inner frame I'll paint that all first, though. if I forget how anything goes together I'll just check the manual but that's rare.

They are called "lacquers" in a sense that you need to use lacquer thinner to thin them, not alcohol and not water.
I think only Tamiya makes true lacquers (and maybe Gaia). Doesn't matter though, Mr Color behaves like a lacquer for all practical purposes.

Ha, yea do that instead. Small, flat brush thats at a angle works best from my experience. Light pressure, thin your paints, 2-3 thin coats, 20 mins at least in between coats if using acrylics. Vallejo works well. Also, I always have a paper towel nearby to dab a good ammount of paint off the brush before I apply it. No one asked, but yea do the above if brush painting

yeah? depends on what you mean because if you're just talking about the average build people don't really care that much but for decently built kits you don't really see any nubs at all.

Just topcoat anon, it makes such a huge difference in the overall look of the kit, and its simple as hell. But if you dont wanna, for whatever reason, get good with a hobby knife. Easyest way to remove nubs. Get one and practice on your older kits

I sand from 400 up to 1000 for most lighter colors and up to 12000 for some of the darker bits. Though sometimes I just take the black or dark grey panel liner and knock most the fluid off the brush and just give a light tough of it on the marks. This zaku fz has some awful marks in the arms. Bad seams too, but even with sanding it left awful looking marks on the green plastics. Main reason I didnt bother to submit for themgroup build. Anyway on the gelgoog most nubs cleaned up ok and a touch of that dark gray panel liner helped blend any of the white stress marks left after flush cutting the nubs off. A couple waterslides and a topcoat and youd never notice any of that on the gelgoog, but the zaku would need some paint to look decent.

hello i have a question
is it okay to use clay to replace a piece that has been damaged? I don't think i want to try casting the piece or buying another kit to replace it, it was very small, so i thought of just using normal clay, or do you guys know the type of clay that would work best for replacing a tiny piece?

Or you could try getting one of these and see if it fits since the base of that kit is an MD knockoff anyway. If it doesn't, just widen/thicken the hole and ball until it does.
