Everything that Gaiman actually tried to negotiate with the lawsuit was actually settled in the 90s. That lawsuit was basically just a negotiation tactic by Gaiman to get even more money from McFarlane, since it all happened when Image wanted to make the deals McFarlane made in the early 90s more legit. In other words, Gaiman just wanted to get paid twice for work he already did (ontop of royalties he was already getting). Stuff like Gaiman not being compensated correctly was just Gaiman trying to overexaggerate to gain even more money (again, Gaiman made a ton more money from McFarlane than he would have from DC/Marvel which is all McFarlane promised) and his claims he wasn't properly credited was just plain false (Gaiman even sued and won $45,000 because he claimed damages over being credited for his work in an Image book).

What ultimately happened is that McFarlane traded Gaiman's characters with Miracleman, which McFarlane was falsely led to believe he owned. The whole ownership was a huge mess that took almost two decades to finally settle. McFarlane THOUGHT he bought the rights for the character from Eclipse (he only owned Miracleman's logo and Gaiman's run) for $25,000 in the 90s and then Marvel THOUGHT they bought the rights for a million bucks in the 00s, but couldn't really do anything with the most important parts until 2014. Two decades, 1994 - 2014, of people just blindly making claims over MM.
So because McFarlane didn't really have the rights to trade Gaiman MM for Angela, Gaiman kept Angela and some dumb female judge put the rights over Caligistro and Medeival Spawn in another legal mess.
Lotta text because fuck lawyers, greedy creators, and liars.
