Lets ballpark and say they made $900 mil during the original run of the 80's toyline. Adjusted for inflation, that would be around $2,173,230,633.80.

Would it be fair to say He-Man is a billion dollar franchise?

It would be fairer to say masters WAS a billion dollar franchise. Mattel poorly stewarded the brand after it's initial decline resulting in new adventures getting the green light. While new adventures isnt horrible, it was a far cry from the MOTU kids of the 80s grew up with. Worse yet is that it was too sappy and safe for 90's kids, and ultimately it just cemented the franchise's vegetative state. 200X was GOAT, but because it pandered so hard to the original fanbase, it didnt seem to bring in much newblood. For the sake of the conversation, compare that to transformers. A franchise which under went drastic revision after drastic revision only to end up becoming more financially successful and globally iconic than it had ever been before.
I think the big lesson to take away from all this is that Mattel had the chance to continue MOTU's legacy after the financial failure of the 87 movie. But their incesant apprehension and lack of direction or confidence in the brand always resulted in their shitting of the bed. I feel like 200X could have had a real shot if they hadnt flooded the line with heman and skeletors. Likewise I think some of the concepts they had dreamt up prior to new adventures would have kept the brand going for longer. But they always made the wrong calls. As for the brand's future, I dont have much optimism. Culture is in a bad spot right now, neither of the netflix offerings particularly interest me, and eventually the oldfags will die out leaving the most powerful man in the universe wholy forgotten.

I agree with everything else, but I'm cautiously optimistic.
As a new fan myself, I can say Origins successfully brought me in, and I'm sure there's more like me, and the new CG kids show is really great and should get MotU to a new generation.

As a kid, I watched a few episodes of the Mike Young MOTU revival, but never really got hooked on it.

Strangely enough I like the kids show, but dislike it's toys and am "meh" on Revelation but like it's toys.

IF He-man manages to find success again, I agree that it will be the CGI show that does it. It's fun, and it's different enough that success for it will also mean confidence from Mattel in constantly reinventing the brand to keep it fresh.

Of course, the flip side being that if it fails, MotU will most likely just remain a nostalgia brand only able to sell product through vintage updates ala Classics and Origins, and it'll die off with its original fan base.

The rev figures are pretty nice, the battle cat actually has joints as compared to the origins version. Evil lyn and skelegod are the best but ive had really tight shoulders on them all, especially skelegod and faker.

Oddly I haven't run into that. I've run into loose right legs on Evil Lyn and Skelegod though, although not bad enough that they have any issue standing. Just a bit concerned for long term as I'm not sure how modern double jointed, non-ratcheted legs will hold up for 7 inch or taller figures. I have some old Spawn stuff without ratchets that's ok as far as stability over the long haul, but totally different company.

I do love that they are pinless and tend to come with a good helping of accessories for their price though, very nice

I think it did well enough with new blood which was there goal as initial sales were strong, what Matty keeps fucking up time and time again is one of the factors that they think failed the OG line is some cemented truth and won't let it go: The belief that a lack of core cast (ie Skeletor and He-man) being available to buy sank the brand. True or not, they have taken the message to much to heart and with New Adventures, the 2002, Retro, and even to a lesser extent Revelations have drowned the market with just He-man and Skeletor and even today they refuse to think that they keep killing the lines by offering 4+ He-mans and Skeletors to 2 new OGs a case is crippling it's own brand strength.

Not an expert, but I recall reading that they sold too much product to retailers in 1986 and then retailers would not purchase any more in 1987 because they didn't manage to clear the inventory. Which is why 1986 has such amazing numbers. Maybe they could have coasted selling those $250 mil amount year after year but they overestimated the growth of the line and clogget it.

A combination of factors that have been brought up numerous times. The show was no longer making new episodes, so new characters were no being advertised as well. Mattel kind of shit the bed when retailers asked for more He-man and Skeletors due to demand, but Mattel thought they wanted new characters, so we got the 86 wave with minimal tooling. Then in 87 we got the movie which flopped hard.

People do not understand that pegwarming is how things SHOULD be. If things are selling out like crazy, it will be near impossible for a normal person without autistic commitment to find the figures they want.

Bread pegwarms. Pepsi pegwarms. Cheese pegwarms. If they don't pegwarm, there is something wrong, like when psychos made a run on toilet paper and sanitizer/liquid soap in 2020. I don't want figures that I want to buy to be impossible to find or cost over msrp.
