Wasting a Haslab on a Black Series Rancor... what were they thinking? They probably wasted so much money already on this project. It should have been a TVC Ebon Hawk with a promise of doing more KOTOR figures, with pack-ins being two of the figures that would later show up at retail.
Anonymous
>>9458145 The whole idea of Haslab is to gauge interest in big projects with almost zero risk. 3D modeling and 3D printing a prototype costs basically nothing for a company like hasbro.
People that think this is some disaster for Hasbro are fucking stupid and don't understand the expensive part of making toys is production and distribution.
Haslabs failing is going to happen and should happen.
Crimson Commander !!uoqqXVkn8aK
>>9458166 I'm sure Hasbro doesn't like to waste money regardless. Brian Flynn of Super7 quoted that he personally spent $18,000 just to make a paint master for his TMNT Party Wagon that he's working on. They have to have spent money and man hours making prototypes.

>>9458166 I think the big take away if the Rancor fails (and it truly is looking like it might..) is Hasbro's ego. I don't think any of the Haslabs have failed, correct? How they can't get backing, for an iconic design in the OT is kind of pathetic. All they had to do was include Oola and Malakili for their stretch goals. That's it. Everyone knows it, but Hasbro. It doesn't help the actual Racon's paint apps look really crappy and charging 350 for everything is just daft

Then right after the backlash they announced Unicron, which had settled people down some, who didn't expect there to be two different Haslabs, which then sort of competed against one another, with most people backing Unicron instead.
At least that's what I recall of the situation.

>Price (yes it's big but it costs significantly more than it should) >Paint looks like basic shit despite them boasting it has over 900 paint ops (which goes into the price, it should look as good as a Sideshow/Hot Toys figure) >Stretch goals are completely tone deaf by not being new figures of the two most wanted characters associated with the Rancor that probably couldn't be sold outside of this context; Oola and Malakili >Salacious Crumb being a tier unlock on his own makes no sense since he's largely irrelevant to the Rancor and you can just get him in the Galaxy's Edge pack now >Luke being a new figure is neat and expected but it's not as if they weren't going make it anyway and use the tooling to release as The Mandalorian version >Packing figures on yet another style of vintage card which just encourages them to not even be opened >Cardboard backdrop and random skulls and bones should just be included to begin with Anonymous
>>9458094 The shade of the plastic makes it look like it is made out of chocolate. The eyes are just plain silver, with no pupils, as if the rancor was blind. The shading is abysmally sloppy, how does this thing have 900 paint decos? Where? This doesn't look like a 350$ figure, it looks cheap.

While not as bad, it reminds me how the Victory Saber Haslab was mostly accesories the toy should have gotten from the start. He first tier was an weapon that would leave the toy incomplete. And this is most likely a hand painted prototype they're showing off so the actual production one is going to be worse. Look at that mouth, it's like someone just took some red and used the fill tool in MS Paint. They could have at least used a matte finish on the skin and then a glossy in the mouth to make it seem like a different surface. Fuck even the G.I. Joe Classified Snake Eyes used that to separate parts of his suit so even though he's completely black, you can pick out areas of detail within him since armor areas are glossy and undersuit/fabric areas are less so.

I mean that scale goes back to the seventies and the reason they made them that small in the first place was so they could make manageable X-Wings and stuff for them. If they had cancelled the traditional line and only did BS then it would make more sense but it just seems so pointless to do it in this line when they have TVC.

And then when he revived TVC he just repacked all the same shit that wasn't selling in the Walmart 3.75 Black Series-- but on a TVC card, which he figured people like Paul from JTA would eat up. >>9458471 I think even with new and improved articulation, a TVC Rancor would probably be a hard sell as a Haslab, given that as recently as 2015 you could get it in a set that included Jabba and some other figures for $130. If they tried doing a TVC-scaled one for Haslab and tried to charge $250-300 for it I still don't think people would bite, especially if the add-ons are as shitty as what they're doing now.
Though Paul from JTA would be cheerleading the fuck out of it if the tier unlocks were stuff like Malakili on a vintage card. The only reason he's not sucking Hasbro's cock over this one is because he hates TBS and it infuriates him when TBS gets vintage cardbacks for figures that don't yet have them in TVC. Even if the unlocks were literally the same ones we're seeing now but in TVC scale he'd be posting article after article professing how amazing the project is and demanding that everyone buy several just to ensure that they hit those numbers to unlock them all.

I remember the POTF2 one warming the pegs forever too. So they probably don’t want to make him because they know he isn’t worth repacking as a regular figure later. But they know Oola will sell, the only reason they wouldn’t want to make her is for similar reasons as to why they don’t want to do slave Leia anymore. I have no doubts Disney does not want a figure like Oola on shelves though and that probably factors into why Hasbro didn't want to make her for this haslab; they won't be able to easily resell her and any other figure capable of reusing any of her half-naked body like slave Leia is similarly not going to make it to retail shelves.

I feel like they should have just done a Jabba's Palace figure set instead. For all the money that went into engineering and making a Rancor, I'd imagine we could have gotten a few unique figures out of that. Would be nice to get a Ree Yees, Yakface, Tessek, any of the Niktos, etc. A mix of unique sculpts but also parts and pieces they could reuse to make other background characters or kitbashed Rebel troopers for Gaming Greats. It seems like they have an aversion to not doing lesser characters in Black Series scale and this would be the perfect avenue to give them to the collectors that want them without risking retail loss.

I can't really think of anything that would justify a Black Series Haslab, though. It's a line that just doesn't lend itself as well to large items like TVC does and most of the stuff that you could put put for it are either vehicles (which are awkward at this scale) or large creatures (which are usually very scene-specific and not really crucial to the collection). Look at what Marvel has, Galactus and the Sentinel are both large characters with long histories within Marvel, hell the Sentinel is easily the centerpiece of an X-Men collection because of how often they fought these things. The rancor isn't as big a part of the Star Wars universe, it has one scene and dies. It's neat to have but your collection doesn't feel empty without it.
Anonymous
>>9460187 The only thing I could think I'd want at this scale in terms of big vehicles and the like is a 1/12 AT-ST. Probably just because it'd be one of the only things that could fit in any kind of detolf or similar sized display, and I'd love an excuse to just have a pilot figure to go with it. I would wager that most Black Series collectors might not be into getting big stuff like vehicles or giant creatures as big as a Rancor because of space/display issues, but a lot of people would certainly be into more eclectic assortments of aliens that aren't major characters. Like what's the point of getting the Cantina set if we only have a couple of figures to populate around it? A lot of people want all of those characters present in the scene but Hasbro will never get around to throwing them into normal waves and retailers might not want the risk of being stuck with them.

All Haslabs go the same, anon. People hold back pledging until they see all the tiers, and then there's a huge push in the last days of the thing. Star Saber barely got funded until the last 4 days or so and then jumped to all tiers. It achieved this by making all the tiers shit that would make the figure useless if it didn't get them. Rancor on the other hand is disgustingly overpriced, and didn't come with anything that people would want. Early pledgers assumed, rightfully, that it'd come with Oola and Malakilli since they're iconic characters that couldn't survive retail, and would have to come with the Rancor. >>9460657 JarJar is a main character though. Even if he is negatively viewed, he was important to the movie. And he got clearanced heavily anyway. They just seem to not want to make minor characters ever. Only time they seem to make anyone else is shit that can be made of easy reuse like Imperial officers. I think they're scared of another Zuvio situation.
Oola and Malakili would just be tough sells at retail because of Oola's "problematic" design with her sexualized outfit and Malakili is just a minor character that doesn't have much context (unless he shows up in Book of Boba or something). I think they would be perfect for fan channel exclusives though, especially if the Rancor does get funded. I was thinking that if they were to go to retail, they'd be single packed and that could become a huge pain the ass. Oola would instantly be scalped and piss every collector off and Malakili could either get scalped as well or wind up pegwarming next to all the Landos and Greef Kargas.

Only reason they're tooling for that new Luke is because it was most likely already in the pipeline for the ROTJ anniversary and to throw out as The Mandalorian version too.

It's one of the reasons everyone I know up here skipped Unicron. Shipping and taxes and exchange plus a severely weakened dollar meant I would be paying around 700 to get him. Star Saber ended up running me $270 and god knows that ain't gonna be worth it.

If Hasbro likes making Mandalorians so much why can’t we get these two? Both significant characters that lead the planet at one point and both look like they were designed with action figures in mind. Hell, Almec was a pretty significant recurring character long before he got the armor.

I wonder what version we're going to get first from Hasbro. Re-Armored Fett from The Mandalorian or his new Book of Boba look.
Anonymous
>>9464046 It's crazy that before each prequel movie and before TCW 2008 we had entire lines ready to go and on store shelves for weeks before they premiered and nowadays Hasbro doesn't even have a Boba Fett ready for the launch of his tv show and they are only getting to a toy of him from the Mandalorian an entire year after he appeared on it.
Anonymous
>>9464055 True. Though I think part of that is due to Disney being uncooperative about sharing assets with Hasbro because they're paranoid about leaks. Lucas seemed to be more transparent with them about stuff because merchandise was how he made his money so he wanted to capitalize as early as he could on the hype.

>>9464064 Previously, most licensors did a pretty good job keeping details locked up until they were actually in stores.
Don't know why they can't do the same thing nowadays. It's especially odd, since there's a ton of leaks for Disney's stuff that just happens from their own people, so it wouldn't really hurt them too badly to let the toy guys know what they should make.

>>9464207 Yea it would be nice. I think part of it too is that designs seem to change a lot more often now into filming something these days, especially with CGI assets. So to save themselves money and headaches, the Hasbro SW team just waits until things are released so they can get screen accurate details instead of going off concept art that may be outdated and Disney doesn't tell them about changes until the molds have already been made. I can kind of appreciate that because I hate getting figures of shit that's inaccurate and triggers my autism. That's partly why I stopped buying MCU based Marvel Legends. And it also saves from having to buy multiple versions of the same character.
