If it's something like a 1000toys Synthetic Human, Acid Rain, or Mezco I tend to just put them in poses and pull them down once every now and then to switch it up. Now if it's something like Mega Construx, Motu Origins, Zbots, Imaginext or something with play features or gimmicks, I definitely pull those down and have them punch each other and make pew pew noises.
Some toylines are just made to be played with, usually I find the less articulation the easier it is to do so. I find other toys, especially if they're on the higher end, just serve best with their intended purpose. There's no right or wrong way long as you're having a fun time messing around with your figures.
