So when exactly did toy collectors in the modern sense start existing? I always got the impression the hobby really grew in the 90s but this figure being advertized as a collectors edition makes me think it started even earlier then that

There's an old news video from around when Return of the Jedi came out where some adult is buying the action figures for himself to collect, so the collectors have definitely been around for a while, but toy companies didn't really start courting those adults until Playmates' Star Trek line.

You still saw some occasional weirdness even before that, like the coins that came with the OG Power of the Force figures. I can't imagine a lot of kids being excited about some coins, but apparently it was around that time there was this huge coin collecting bubble going on which might've been why Kenner chose to go with coins as a pack-in bonus.

Collectors only value the integrity of the packacking, the figure is completely worthless to them. In fact, the packaging would be worth even more if the wrong figure were inside of it.

So, comics fans where buying and trading Golden Age Comics and listing ad for them in the back of 1960's Marvel and DC books. Robert M. Overstreet published the first edition of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide in 1970 and annually ever since. Similar things happened with LP's, Toys and other stuff.

The collectables boom really started in the late 80's and into the early 2000's when all the Baby Boomers where settled in, had spare time and disposable incomes and wanted to regain their youth. From what I understand, Mego dolls, 12 inch G.I. Joe's and Barbies where already collectable by the mid 80's.
