Never was a Bionicle guy past the Phantoka, not super into Lego anymore since they rarely put out themes I enjoy. This is a genuine question, not a shitpost, but what keeps you tethered to a toyline that is dead? Is it the sense of community, nostalgic resonance, the fact that it's a building toy so new things can continually be made? Have you found similar toys that have equally piqued your interest?

For me it's the flash games. Unironically more SOVLful than any of the movies. IDK why but playing as a regular matoran, doing normal villager things like gathering seashells or listening to the le-koro band, and fending off wild Rahi, is way more interesting to me than any of the superhero shit all the later sets were about.

To this day I haven't played MNOG 2 past Ga-Koro because it keeps falling apart. Farthest I ever made was when Nokama came and made you the kolhii player, which allowed me to leave Ga-Koro but after that every other NPC outside Ga-Koro just disappeared. MNOG 1 is still 10/10 though.

The word you are looking for is comfy. Which honestly is still ok.
I think the reason behind that has to do with both how MNOG fleshed out life in Mata Nui as well as wanting a world somewhat different or even alien compared to our own that is otherwise calm and tranquil (minus the fending off giant panthers with tank treads that is).
It's a matter of preference I think some people out there love LOTR for its epic but others would just prefer to enjoy Middle Earth and chill on the Shire for a while if they were able, the man Tolkien himself included.

Now that you mention it, excluding Bohrok-Kal animations and the ending of MNOG, Toa never really got a spotlight in any of the Templar stuff. They were there. but most of the focus was with the villagers and their lives.

That's cause MNOG was never intended to be anything special by Lego. They put most of their effort into the cancelled PC game which would have focused on the Toa, which is why the could only show up briefly in MNOG as per Lego's ruling. Lego didn't give a rats ass about Templar, they were the underdogs who barely had anything to work with. They had to beg Lego and the Saffire game devs just to let them see what the characters and world were supposed to look like. That's why there was a confusion in MNOG between the Pakari and Ruru masks, why the Tohunga had prototype arms and also why some areas looked like the early alpha levels from the 3D game.
Templar took these limitations and whatever info they could gather from the very early pre-Maori controversy story concepts, and made the kind of exploration game that they liked while Lego and Saffire were fucking about with the 3D game. The only reason the Toa and Makuta were allowed to show up at the end of MNOG was cause that game got canned and Lego needed to wrap the story up somehow.

New building toys suck and CCBS was an awful replacement for technic action figures. I don't even like most of the later bionicle years that much. To me peak bionicle will always be the original Rahi sets and all of the titans up until the inika torso apocalypse began (Maxilos is good though). Once it all became humanoid liftarm frames that only serve to pop armor pieces onto it I lost interest, and that's fucking all CCBS is.

But I still like bionicle because nothing has replaced or obsoleted bionicle.

Takua was the main character in Mask of Light and he even referenced the game, so it was moderately influential. I read somewhere that MNOG's popularity was one of the main factors why Mask of Light was more focused on Matoran than the Toa, I just can't recall where. Lego even wanted to do a CD release of MNOG that for some reason never happened.
On the other hand, Lego never took the game as "true canon" and didn't acknowledge its events until years later. That's why the first novel doesn't tie into MNOG in any way, the writer wasn't told to implement the game's story into the book, they are completely incompatible with each other. I'm also sure Greg had little to no experience with MNOG, he even refused to accept taxi crabs because he thought they were too silly for his "super serious" sci-fi story.

Mainly cause their focus was always the Toa, as those sold best, they were the faces of the brand. Bionicle appealed to different sorts of people, some of whom may have liked to see more of the franchise's "comfy" side and explore the fictional settings and cultures, but most kids just wanted action figures they could smash into each other.
Reminder Lego used to refer to their main target audience as Bully Bob, simple minded kids who wanted simplistic robot action figure sets. These kids were Lego's primary focus group, not the long-term fans who cared for stuff like worldbuilding.

It's not even that Bionicle's story was complicated at all, just that there wasnt any centralized place to engage with it, you had to ingest EVERYTHING. According to Faber this was by design, making the kids who were engaged feel like an actual ancient legend was being uncovered in real time and they had to keep their eyes out for where theyll get more info next, be it in a comic, novel, or even a movie. Problem with this is obvious, most kids (and adults) don't fucking have the patience for that.

If Bionicle came back today with the exact same plot it already had, beat for beat, but reinterpreted as an animated series, then there would be way more people that would be both familiar with the story and actively following it instead of "liking the red one."

Greg has said as much in an interview from a couple years back. On the meeting where Lego announced the plan to revamp Bionicle with the 2009 stuff and leave the ongoing story behind, Greg was the only one who argued in favor of keeping the continuity and the characters. According to him, everyone else in the meeting room wanted to move on because they believed no one was following the story anyway. They thought fans wouldn't notice if they replaced all the characters and started up a new plot. Supposedly it was Greg's idea to tie the Mata Nui-related story into the Bara Magna setting and have Makuta win for a time instead of being killed off at the end of 2008.

there are a few 3d MNOG recreations that died out fairly quickly and never got anywhere, but there is also a MNOG "1.5" which is a fan made flash game with its own story taking place after the first game during the Bohrok saga, using existing MNOG assets as well as new ones made specifically for it. they only released two chapters until they put it on hold but what they released was actually really good, you should give it a try if you liked MNOG

Why was he so deadset on a limited color palette? No idea, but probably because he was being idealistic and wanted the limited parts to be brought out by kids' imaginations, or something.

So I’ve got a few hundred Bionicle figures in storage. I have painstakingly sorted through my entire collection, I reckon about 8 years went by before I opened up the bins and attempted to make sense of what was in them. I’ve listed all of what I have by name and lego catalogue #, most are missing box and instructions, some are missing a few pieces that I have also gone through and listed according to the part ID and linked to Bricklink. I have the majority of figures that were released between 2001-2007 with varying completeness, but many have been kept in good condition with no missing parts except for the canisters which are what carry most of the market resale value. Stupid ADHD and parents messy hoarding and being unable to plan for the future when the complete figures would be more valuable, but there’s still a hefty haul here that I’d like to sell. Is it worth selling them individually? I even finally went through and took pictures of all of them. The data has been compiled in a doc which I will also be converting to a spreadsheet. If I tried selling the entire lot in bulk I’d ask for no less than $700, but I feel like I could get more. Anons?

Heya anons, what kinda stuff are ya into that partially helps fill the Bionicle-shaped hole in your hearts? Any other toylines (or hobbies in general) you've gotten into or experimented with since Bionicle ended, to see if they'd click?
For me personally, I've always been into regular Lego and Transformers, but I've tried getting back into both as of late with middling success; only pick up a small handful of each a year (usually Ideas+Creator and Generations), but when they're good they're aight - doesn't really fill the same pit though. Over the past few years I've also tried out both plamo and regular action figures; model kits are fun but they're a huge time investment, so I still only have like 5 and they're all unpainted. As for regular action figs, I find myself gravitating towards either robots or armor-wearers, I always found those sortsa designs more attractive for toys, but other than that I don't stick to any specific line; a figma here, a robot damashii there... this year I've mainly been attracted to marvel legends because they seem to have gotten to what's in my eyes acceptable quality, compared to what superhero toys were like a decade ago (babytoy garbage). Keeping my eyes on Black Series and Spartan Collection to get better, but they're just shy of being quality to me so I mostly haven't dipped in them yet.

How bout you guys?

Eh, I still build Bionicles a lot.
I like some other Lego themes too, like Tiny Turbos and Drome Racers. I mainly build Tiny Turbos that I sometimes incorporate other themes in.
I also try to build something new to me every week, as I'm in some art group chat where we get a word on a weekly basis and then we have a week's time to do something with it / for it.

It's just been Lego and Bionicle.
I tried to dabble into other Lego themes for a bit but most of it doesn't interest me any more. Hidden Side was the last thing, it's basically technic figures or spooky shit for me. Without that, I'm out.
Lego's recent quality failures have only pushed me away further, so I stick with Bionicle or older themes.

Otherwise I just stick with other creative hobbies. Writing, cosplay, etc. Hell, cosplay is where my Bionicle obsessions continue to this day.

I like the rest of your Matoran, too.
The hands on my guy are heresy. I had some cracked joint sockets and cut the cracked end off, sanded it down and the glued a part of a modified 1×2 plate with bar on. Not the prettiest solution, but it works. I might end up replacing them one day, but as of now I haven't found a solution I was equally as hapoy with. Haven't tried 3D printed hands yet, but they tend to be expensive.

I’m sitting on about 130 figures to varying completeness. I’ve documented everything and want to begin selling them to save space. Too much potential value to simply give away. What are my options? Do you think anyone would pay up to a grand for the entire haul? Missing parts all documented via bricklink so one could theoretically order a smart cart of everything that is missing (besides the containers) and finish the incomplete sets. Well I guess I was dumb to think getting back into Bionicle would be ok and not be filled with Trannies, LGBT fags, and generally autistic pieces of shit. Dear lord, the bio discord servers are filled with these assholes and you can't even have a normal conversations without them getting in the way.

I've spoken with some other members in the community about this and there's a silent majority that dislike those people have to deal with them. There is an underground server that allows you to atleast have some fun and not be annoyed by the those people and other bullshit that happens in the community.
