I have a few hanging up on the wall and on shelves because I don't really have a proper display set up for them or they're really fragile figures (NECA TF2 Scout). The former I'd gladly open up and display once I move into a place with enough room for a good display but the latter I'm just gonna keep as is as a nice memento.

For examples like your picture, it's because they're old (and possibly valuable, the Digimon one prob goes for decent money but fuck if I know about the others) and they probably aren't that great as figures anymore to bother opening them. Nothing is stopping you from buying a duplicate if you want to actually play with one, either.

Some I keep for a rainy day, some older figures I just keep in box because a large part of the appeal of toys as a kid was the anticipation of going to a toystore. If there's a newer, better version the old figure is best as a nostalgic piece and keeping it in package plays into that.

with me personally, its because most old figures have terrible articulation so unboxing them and putting them on the shelf, youre basically just standing them up the same way as they are in the packaging.
so its like at that point, just keep them in the box because at least you have the figure to look at and that nice packaging art.

but if its stuff like SH figuarts, fuck that shit, im taking it out and posing it on a stand.

It's basically just like hanging a poster or whatever on you wall, except more interesting. I wouldn't go as far as to call it art, but you get what I mean. Picrel for example is seemingly made to be kept in the packing and pinned up on the wall like you would a poster of the band. It doesn't seem that weird to me, although exclusively leaving your figures in box is a bit boring
