Here's my vintage Futuron table that I mentioned in the last thread. Needs to be dusted/organized and there's one or two sets I haven't built that belong to this theme that aren't on the table, but I've also got a few small MOCs there. If anybody wants to see closeups of this table I'll post em.

I agree that their base was really special. I have a specific memory of my grandma getting it for me, and it might have even been the first Futuron set I ever had. Something about the red Futuron figures exclusive to this set (and later appearing once in a figure multipack) is really exciting. The red color scheme just looks so great on these guys, and the fact they're so rare makes them even better.

Really nice collection! I also really like futuron, I have the monorail too but sadly no space to really set it up.

I was also thinking of remaking the Blacktron 1 base into futuron colors and having it interact with the monorail in some way, I think that base would look really nice in the futuron color scheme.

Also love the figs - a small change I really enjoy is color coding their transparent visors.

Lol, I agree Starwars is soicore. I'm not so much into SW itself as I'm into SW 1-3 Lego sets, though I have picked up a few from more recent movies, etc just because I liked the set designs or minifigs. That AT-AT is on the table because I didn't really have a better spot to put it.

It's really more about the presentation. There's just something mystical and magical about the way the 80s and 90s lego boxes look like, they have this aura that just draws you into a new world. The backdrops are just fucking kino. Of course, the sets aren't like that once you actually build them, and they're still very basic, but they have so much sovl. It feels like they were designed to inspire, not to just deliver some product that you build once and forget about.

If we're talking about the box art, the old ones are a lot simpler (prettier too in my opinion) which leaves the focus on the actual set. The modern sets always have these busy scenes with a lot of shit that's not even part of the actual set. The new City sets are some of the worst offenders, showing entire roads and impossibly-scaled skyscrapers in the back. And a good chunk is also spent showboating characters from the franchises (both Ninjago/City/Monkie Kid and licensed themes are guilty of this) because that's the only thing AFOLs, consoomers and kids care about (apparently).

I know inflation is a real thing, but looking at the new sets this year and realizing how much less you're getting these days for your money is insane.

Look at the new star wars battle packs for example, some only have 3 figures and they're $5 more for less parts and figures than you got a decade ago.

If you played with LEGO as a kid, what was your playstyle? Most of my brothers were all into cars, one of them was obsessed with Technic and trains...And then there was me, using minifigures for cannon practice targets (that satisfying sound of the cylinder launching and hitting plastic) and having a little shop/museum of all the different minifigure heads I had. Oh, and using the raised castle baseplates' hole as either a prisoner cell (it rubs the lotion on its skin...) or a treasure hoard for all the coins, bills and other valuables I had. Good times.

My excitement for the new lunar base has vanished. Initially I liked it for the glass dome and because the spacecraft reminded me of classic space Polaris space lab set I kinda wanted. And some time ago I thought "why buy lunar base if I can get that polaris station it reminds me of?"

And here it is! I actually like how there was an ongoing "evolution" of black and white space sets: Classic space -> Futuron - > Exploriens. The later had the best station with transparent dome and I own that beauty too. That leaves me without any reasons to get new city space station.

She bought me the Big Bang Theory set when it came out (she really liked the show) and I built it and had it on display for her. Eventually I took it apart so I could use the pieces for other things. She got real pissy with me because it wasn't together, acting like if the set wasn't built that I'd lose some parts. The fact that these sets were not perfectly polished or complex in their build is what made them a great toy. As a kid, I'd look at a set like this and see the blacksmith tools, castle walls and accessories and already start to imagine what I could add or build onto it or use the parts for.

I really dislike the idea of lego sets being single-use models for kids. At a certain complexity, there's nothing left to finish off and it feels like a chore to rebuild. Not to mention how even kids view sets as "rare" or "investments" today. Lego should be about making your own thing and creating your own stories for it.

The design was dictated by the limited range of parts and colors. But this also made the sets more versatile. You could use the parts of a castle set and use them for a ship and it still looked like a real set.

The result of buffing a canopy with a bench grinder. Worked really well, made it nice and shiny but maybe I need to go over it with a rougher grit first to get rid of the deeper scratches instead of just the fine finish one.

Not as good looking as a brand new piece, but at least it has some shine again.

Here's the result on some tiles. They weren't too worn out but they had some wear and tear on them and now they look much better.

Side note, look at all the fucking 2v2 tiles that broke when placing them on a plate to buff them, thanks Lego!

Based on what I’ve researched, there was a point in time, maybe a decade ago, where Lego messed up their blue pieces and they ended up becoming fragile. So it isn’t surprising that you’re getting a lot of brittle blue pieces, because they’re probably from that time period.
As far as I’m aware, that problem is fixed already, so modern blue pieces should be fine.

The fuck? See, this shit I just cannot understand. I knew this was a piece of shit kit when it came out, and it's still a piece of shit kit of grey blob pieces, completely uninspired to this day and yet consoomers are willing to pay $500 for a sealed kit. The fuck?

It's just one of those things I look back on and regret not doing it. I used to browse the clearance isles at Wal Mart all the time back then and picked up quite a few good kits on clearance, for example the original Lego Batman kits didn't sell well at all when they came out, and I bought several of the Tumblr sets from TDK that came out around that time at Wal Mart and sold them for like $400 sealed at the time a few years later.

I don't even know if you can even get deals like that anymore, I don't buy kits in stores anymore so I don't even know if Wal Mart ever does any clearance stuff like that anymore, or if the clearance kits these days are even going to be worth anything in the future considering how popular lego is these days.

It's so good anon, got it as a sister piece to my punk pirate ship and the 2 look really good together. Gonna buy more bandmates. Would highly recommend picking it up now before the price inflates too high. I think it will go down as a modern classic. My only gripe is I kinda wish they threw in a cool minifig. Usually I dont care about minifigs, but this set just has 2 minidolls that aren't really that cool.

You also get a weird brick built space cow thing as the pilot but you do get a Unikitty which is kinda nice getting one of those.

I made up GameofThronish stories with all the castle factions. Dragons and Lions were the main factions. Falcons were mercenaries that could work for either side. Forestmen held control over the forest inbetween and were allied with the Dragons. Wolfpack was a faction that raided travellers in the insecure borderlands.

There were two different main time periods: a high-tech version of modern-day Town/City that blended Town and Space, and a post-apocalyptic future with pockets of high-tech remnants that blended Space and Castle.

The Space Town scientists had invented a wheeled robotic time machine (the closest I came to having a sigfig) and were engaged in efforts to cause the bad-end future to never come about because the main villain was a product of that timeline.

The post-apocalyptic future blended Castle and Space, where the castles were full of Futurons fighting with swords and laserguns.

Pirates were a separate time period and didn't mix with any of the other stuff unless someone traveled back to that time, as it was simply the shared past of the other two timelines.

I don't think Lego necessarily had a "good" and a "bad" side when it came to classic castle factions. The closest to it is probably wolfpack, which were specifically shown to be bandits and in jail at times. I think they just left it open ended for kids to imagine whatever they wanted with it.

So finished all the 20th anniversary kits I have for now just have to hunt for the boxed imperial flyer one and the obiwan baggie.

Slightly a waste of money as I only really wanted the snow speeder and Slave 1, I like the at-rt but its WAY TOO BIGG (compared to the legion one anyways), might pick up the hoth at-st tomorrow since my backwater is finally starting to get the new stock. Custom minifig heads makes sense for non-human characters like the Muppets though, I don't see it as any different as the alien heads from Space Police 3 for example. The Simpsons heads looked off cause they were just too big for minifig bodies and could easily have worked with regular yellow heads.

Galaxy Squad was better than it gets credit for. A lot of people didn't love the bug-centric sets, but everything in the line was good. It needed 1 more wave. It performed poorly enough that it sabotaged IP Space for going on a decade now.

Personally, I like the one from 2009 the best, the one that came with the Battle for Endor set (8038). I just feel like the size is perfect and the modern ones feel way too large. There's no reason a fucking AT-ST should cost $50, it should be a $30 set max.

This exactly. It was fine. The bad guy sets were pretty obviously better than most of the actual space police, but the whole thing felt gimmicky in a way I can't quite put my finger on. When you look back at classic space all the way up through the 2000ish, there wasn't much conflict in the themes. They were more like rivals. I think there is room for revival there. Space mining or space archaeologists on dangerous worlds. Maybe a faction of space bandits trying to steal from them or sabotage them, but the whole thing needs to feel more exploratory in nature. I would be all in on on 2.0s for almost any of them, but I think TLG really missed the boat by not doing something like Ice Planet 2022 as something bright and fun for kids, but also an homage to those kids parents from 2002.

I like Star wars and am liquidating my warhammer, as for buying sets I'm not a 100% on when there are a series of "special edition" I might as well get them all, I don't hate any of the kits the atrt is less ideal and the pod racer is out of place but honestly the pod race part of episode 1 was cool as fuck 20 odd years ago. won't happen. monorails are gone in the way of the past like raised baseplates. they were made by a company separate from lego, and they no longer exist. it is highly unlikely they will make it on their own or contract it out again.

The bugs needed some more outside of the hive crawler as signature sets. It's funny cause I look at pic related and can't help think that it's a hold over galaxy squad design. I think one of the big reasons galaxy squad didn't sell well was ppc was becoming a thing and the sets had a very low count comparative to price. The Vermin Vaporizer was a $60 set with barely 500pcs, the Hive Crawler was $70 at 550 pcs. Reminder that these were 2013 prices so adjusted for inflation that's like asking someone to spend $70 or $80 today.

Why does lego hate articulation? I just got this set, the dragon is a nice build but it has dog shit articulation, the feet are fully attached to the legs and have zero articulation in the leg other than the ratchet joint at the hip, the arms are just one solid piece, even just a few mixle joints would have vastly improved the build without having to do much to any other part of the build
Nothing ever has knee's, mechs, creatures etc etc, lego is a perfect medium for getting in tons of articulation yet lego consistently refuses to take the extra 30 seconds to add it in

But the thing is, if you dumb down all the toys to the likes of my brother, to whom a brick is all they need, then the kids who like nuance in their play will be disappointed. Meanwhile, my brother could still play with bionicles that had proper articulation, but he would just ram em together.

So i feel like Lego is approaching this problem from the wrong angle.
Like firstly, kids need to be taught how to play. Some parents would be surprised that that doesnt come naturally. And thats why you have toys that essentially play themselves.
Legos are something you have to teach a kid to play with, they need to be part of the build process, and then you need to (at least early on) be there with them to show them how to play with em.

I think this is Lego having to adjust to parents who have not taken time to play with their kids, and or their "playtest" sessions are poorly handled.

Why do lego instruction books have a qr code for digital instructions? I get that digital instructions are great to have access too just in case you lose yours or want to look over a build before you buy it etc etc but when building a new set does any one honestly get the instruction book, scan the code, download the instructions, then build? Why would you bother when the physical instructions are literally in your hand?

I don't do all that, but I recently got an additional monitor to keep in portrait and it's phenomenal. the manual no longer takes up room on my desk, and I can tell the colors apart much more easily. I wish I'd done this sooner.

They were more lax with military vehicles in 2007 but in 2022 with the faggot head designer in charge, they are not gonna make any sets with military vehicles, especially not 1940s German military vehicles, simple as. Yeah no shit. Afols are lego's largest costumer base. They keep losing the kids. That's why they went end changed the packaging to black and slapped 18+ on it. Though this will inherently kill Lego.
