Hey guys. I'm looking to paint some clear plastic red, but I've never painted anything before so no idea where to start.

I read online to use ink instead of wash to retain the translucent effect. Would pic related be the right paint?

It's a nice base but you'll have to do a bit of modifying with Green Stuff, Epoxie Clay will work too, but may not stay on after hardening due to some of the parts of the figure having softer plastics.

Does anyone know of a six inch figure with butterfly joints I can use to make HUNK? The stealth gamerverse Captain America is similar but not quite right either and has no butterflies. I figure maybe there's something in the GI Joe toy line I can use but I don't know anything about the line so any help is appreciated. Doesn't have to be spot on design-wise. As long as it resembles HUNK from any of his appearances, a black tacticool figure that has butterflies, and can hold various guns. I can just order a head on ebay to paint.

Not a bad suggestion though, but the least amount of paint on the figure the better. I could do it but the few times I've painted a figure it always looks off to me.

◉ Is that the best way to go?
◉ What's the difference between oil based and water based Acrylic markers (I'm looking for the most permanent one).
◉ Should I just buy the Gundam Marker? I can get Posca and Pebeo pretty easy at my local store.
◉ Would it get streaks over a bigger surface, like wolverines grey noggin above?

It's not exactly about customizing, but I figure this may be worth asking here. I imagine you have to deal with stuff like this sometimes.
If you had to fill gaps in between two parts in order to (hopefully permanently) remove any wobble or other movement of the parts, what kind of material would you use? It doesn't have to be something adhesive per se, the parts are held in place, just something that holds its shape and is solid enough to kill any wiggle room.

Don't a lot of people just put super glue or something similar on loose joints and just keep rotating the pieces so they don't stick together? At least that's my understanding of the process.

Thanks all. The Snake eyes and Timber came in today and he looks great for a HUNK. It's minor but the butterflies really do let him pose guns better than figures I have without them. May not be worth posting here since it'll just be a simple head paint and swap, but I'll post what he looks like when it arrives and I'm done with it. I may add some paint to the body too like buckles and perhaps straps.

It’s POM plastic, which is part of why it’s a problem, since apparently very little sticks to it.
It’s a square peg in a square hole, so it doesn’t rotate or anything, it’s purely a non-articulating connection, but while it is very secure (to the point that it’s nearly impossible to separate afterwards) it wobbles.

Hey anons, I'll be working on my first custom project. I bought the Dynamotion Greymon to turn into a Tyrannomon.I figured it'd be an easy enough first project since the two have such a similar physical appearance.
All I think I'll need to do hopefully is snip around the head and smooth it out, and add the Godzilla spine things.

Milliput if you want to sculpt. Can also 3d print the spines. If you want to DIY either of those you'll need some practice, especially with the sculpting clay. Could also do a baking clay, so you're not on the clock while you're working on it.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what I want to do with the Snake Eyes? I want to get the dirt that's on his boots and shins, and the bits dabbed on everywhere else. I figure it should help him stand out more instead of just being mostly black. Plus it fits in with him crawling around in the dirt and sewer. I kind of want to put a little on some of the straps on his vest but I don't know if it'd end up looking right. I've done very little painting outside of one body and a head before. This should be a bit easier I figure since it's just adding some detail instead of painting the entire thing.

So, I'm starting a custom figure of Jill Valentine. This'll be my first custom figure though so I'd like anybody's help if at all possible.

I bought this painted head off of Ebay. It seemed reputable and decent. I'm also looking at bodies that would be really easy to use right off the bat and saw this Jessica Jones SDCC figure, but the aftermarket prices are kinda high ($60-$100). So here's my questions:

Is there a better Marvel Legends base body I could be using that is potentially cheaper?
What sort of starter equipment should I pick up for this (paints, brushes, sculpy, etc.)

I really love the series, but Capcom's been really bad about actually having merch for this kind of thing unless it's statue shit, so any help you all can give me would be appreciated.

That's one of the bodies I thought about using when I was kicking around the idea of making a Jill. Aftermarket price was why I passed on it. Not sure what other ML body would best fit. I wanted to make an RE1 Jill so I went with the GI Joe Lady Jaye. Doesn't really seem to fit RE3 Jill so maybe it won't be of much help. You can get an idea of what I did though. This Lady Jaye is going for 16 with a quick Google search.

Sorry for the shitty display. It bugs some people that I don't change it up much. I just don't really have much room.

Yeah the Jaye isn't too hard to turn into STARS Jill. Thanks on the Barry! He's not 100% accurate but he's close enough to me. Some folks hate cloth on action figures and I like to avoid it when possible, but sometimes it's the best or least bad option. Like wired capes on some figures makes them poseable and just look better. Here it may not look perfect but it looks better than some alternative bodies I was kicking around. Plus I wanted the magnum strap to be there to hold the Python and it would have looked out of place over a plastic vest.

Forgot to mention. If you go with Lady Jaye's figure and don't want to commit the head you bought to the body you can just use a bit of sticky tack if it happens to be lose. It'll stay there solidly but you can pop it off real easy. Better alternative if you decide to use it on an a more RE3 body later instead of using hotglue or something.

Just looked them up. Seems like he put a lot more effort into his than I did. I'd say he's got more skill but at the same time there's a bit too much detail everywhere. I feel if I tried to go overboard with details that it'd just make it look worse. Like the more I'd try to replicate how it exactly looked the more flaws I notice? If that makes sense. I'm happy with my basic head swap, paint, and accessory additions. I'm not very skilled but for what I can do and how they turned out I like them.

So, I actually think I found a good couple of figures that could be used as the RE3-ish base. Having the sticky tac just incase is a great idea. But, I've also talked to my friend and he'll be able to 3D print the holsters and such. I'll just need to learn how to actually paint decently. I'm just worried about having thick globs and ruining it.

Ink's will still fog clear plastic plus without a primer they rub off really easily.

Tamiya clear and mr color clear are way way way better for painting clear plastic.

So I just tried some 3D prints of ball and socket joints, but the socket is integrated into the sculpt. To make the socket I inserted a ball that's .2mm diameter larger than the ball, then at the radius of that larger ball I added a cone shaped object and removed all that material. My issue is that I'm getting a really bad fit. The ball refuses to fit into the socket. As it was a test print, I sanded the ball down to the point where it'll fit, but the fit is so tight that it pops out fairly easily. I read that the diameter should be even smaller, at 0.1mm difference. Did the print come out badly or am I missing something?

FDM prints never give a 1:1 print from the file, print a calibration cube, measure it and adjust the scale in your slicer.
but also it may be the socket itself needs more of a lip and some expansion slots.

i've not made 1/12, but ive done some tailoring for a 2ft skeleton.
the important thing is to use thinner fabric, keep the seams thin and well ironed (i ironed them with an under volted soldering iron with broad tip) as it stops the seams flairing out where the fabric is folded.
also, keep it simple, thigh highs will be a pain in the dick to make from scratch, find some fine gloves with stretchy fabric and use the fingers as a base.
t-shirts are a good starting point though, figure out a singlet design then add sleeves instead of making it all one piece.
trying to source soft and thin materials is hard, i've had luck with good quality cotton t-shirts i've had for years until they're practically worn through, but since its so soft and thin they dont last too long if you aren't careful with your sewing.

Also beware of fabric staining!
Even $50+ Japanese import figs can have softgoods that stain figures.

Washing the material out a few times should help in most cases.

Both figures have their clothing packed in a little bag off of the figure itself out of the box, so there won't be any bleeding or staining unless you dress her up in them and keep it on for a day or so.
I think she was cheaper, but she's probably sold out at most places by now.
There's also this Tech Wear Yuki coming out with a different underpants body. However with the amount of black colored soft goods I can see her fairing a lot worse than the previous Emilys.

Note that D.Va's neck peg is smaller than most other figma, so her head just kind of sits on the body, but can fall off pretty easy if you don't do anything to help stick it on.

Giant custom-drawn stickers that only barely fit on a single sheet for printing. I've since picked up a Hasbro blue Roller to go with it. Toyhax stickers + some Eness dry rub MP10 decals- at least the few I could get to attach. Those sets are so old the material is drying out, most barely wanted to cooperate.

I wanted a sound box replica but the 3D print cost would probably be high, even if I could find someone to design one, attaching it would be tricky and with Prime there's barely enough clearance to warrant the trouble.

Nope. Not a goof. This is exactly how garage kits like that figma-like Pochaco figure are done for Wonfes. If you have the resin, molds, paint/decals, and joints you're good to go! Mind you, casting/painting takes some practice obviously.

Wire is easily your best bet, because it’s cheap and you can just crimp them into shape. You can even take it to the next level with some UV resin and fill the lenses to make it look like real glasses. If you’re willing to shell the money out, your best bet is either the retro card Peter Parker (so long as you mod them so his glasses actually have lenses and not painted circles), or the amber collection Dennis nedry. But I see no reason why you’d spend $30 on Peter or $65 on nedry when you could just spend $5 on wire and $10 on UV resin

Are there certain lines that work well to borrow pieces from? For example Kotobukiya pieces seems to be compatible across their lines.
I guess it might be as simple as buying any one and priming, painting, gluing but it's intimidating.

There's a second batch for the Leon coming at some point. I already started cutting up the genestealer, the articulation is mostly perfect for what I want. I think it won't be too difficult to get most of it looking decent since it's mostly just exposed muscle.

Are you using a resin printer or a PLA printer? Also what resolution is the printer you're using?

The different materials will determine the methods you use to smoothen it. Typically resin has finer and smoother prints while PLA has more obvious layering lines.

Finally got the centaur-body kit printed! Cross-compatible with Sozai-chan/kun (sorry, don't have any pics of the fuller Sozai-chan or of the Sozai-kun at the moment).

This is printed from Sculpteo using SLS nylon. Ball-socket shoulders, hips, tail, 'human' torso connector and hooves. Hinges for the elbow, wrist, knee, and ankles. I'll be putting together an assembly diagram pic and have that available on CGTrader for downloading the files.

I'm only going to sell the STL and STEP files with a ReadMe doc about how to print stuff from Sculpteo, since Shapeways might be too pricey from selling this printed. I'll post a link when it's ready.

I've not worked with cloth a lot myself and I don't think this is quite the advice you're after, but a fun trick for making fabric look like leather is to just coat it in a couple coats of gloss paint. It's what I did with this Punisher when his jacket immediately disintegrated into a mess of peeling vinyl straight out of the package. Obviously you can do this with any color you want too which is nice.

And unless you’re willing to pay out the ass to get those exact three figures used you’re not getting one like it. Well I got him done, or at least as good as I think I can get him. He's more like his RE2 remake version than the Rev2 one I posted. Tried to muddy up his boots and give some of the holsters a drab color. The head doesn't fit on perfectly and sits a little high but it's not too terribly noticeable.

Acetone is really harsh and will cause at least some damage assuming it contacts the figure, I don't recommend it for much in the realm of toys, but I don't know if it will remove the mod podge or not.

Isn’t mod podge extremely safe? You can remove it (depending on what it’s bonded to) with just warm water, maybe add a little soap, it’s not even water resistant. IIRC it seems to be PVA glue with stuff added in to give it it’s protective qualities (also known as wood, Elmer’s or school glue depending on your region). Acetone on the other hand is a strong solvent for many plastics, i.e it will melt the fuck out of the many things import figures and Gundams are made from. Just chisel the mod podge off if it’s really crusted on or soak it for a while.

First, Wash figure with warm and soapy water is possible.

Second depending on the type you plan on using.
-Apoxie Sculpt/Fix-it tends to stay on the best from my experience as it's basically a clay.
-"Yellow/Cream Stuff"(Japanese brand) sticks semi well but it's easier to crack it apart, so it's best for smooth areas.
-Green Stuff tends to peel off on me more than most, but the ideas ive heard was super gluing the base of the putty before applying it to the figure(Havent tried myself)

Basic rule I do to prevent from breaking is making sure you have enough(Not too much) as a support and/or reinforcing it in layers, but making sure each layer sticks and filling gaps.

It might be, once I was desperate without tools to take the face tampo from a PVC figure so I swabbed it off with cotton and acetone nail polish which worked as intended, you’ll easily feel how little you need to apply. My advice - if you want to do some changes to the model (different hand positions, facial expressions, etc.) then get 3ds max 2014 on russian bast shoe weaving sites, the source files have a lot of booleans which makes it problematic to port for blender

Have no idea when i'm gonna continue working on this, fighting with chinese bat aids is not one of the most pleasant life experiences

Took an exacto knife and was able to slowly and gently peel the paint away. Looks a lot better with nothing there so I think I'll leave it be. Tried dinking with the eyes a little but I think I'm going to leave them alone. They don't look too bad and trying to get in there to is a bit of a pain with the brushes I currently have. I'd post a comparison but it'd just be the same image but minus the ugly brownish ring.

Personally I would try to redo the red on the eyes completely and then clean up the edges with a toothpick and some black paint. It shouldn't take more than an hour and some patience, and that red paint will lay a lot better once it's thinned. Maybe add some silver dry brushing to the front of the mouthpiece too.

When I try to apply a wash on something it doesn't turn out right. Anyone know why? I'll do 1 part paint to 2 part water. I don't have any pics since I either give up on the wash or completely clean it off after an attempt. I asked about the different shades of black too but had forgot to ask about the wash. I doubt I'll be able to explain this well but there's slight different shades of black that I was kicking the idea around of mixing up some shades on my HUNK here >>9620470 like someone had mentioned. Though the more I keep looking at him the less I want to piss with what is a really simple but effective custom.

Speaking of that HUNK since that one anon has been pretty kind and happy with how it turned out I may try to do the eyes over again. An idea I have kicking around is to perhaps use some sort of thin red plastic to place into the eyes so they stand out more but don't look painted on. Any thoughts on that or is it a bad idea?

I think you might be better off using different finishes instead of shades. Like a gloss coat for the boot and gloves, matte coat for the parts of the figure that look like fabric, etc. Washes work best when the intent is to add shading, so the wash color should be darker than your base color. If you want to add highlights, you should try dry brushing instead.

I'm more about finding relatively easy little projects to do that are fairly cheap to keep me busy and give me a figure that doesn't exist. I really like it. Did you do any other RE characters?

What you have is like just a tiny bit away from hitting it out of the park. Maybe dry brush or repaint the body a closer grey, dry brushing is easier and you don't have to be as thorough. The straps and vest can all be painted a little more.

You're doing great, you just gotta give yourself time to improve, or y'know, some projects are always a little wip. I retouch old figures pretty constantly.

It could since a clear topcoat tends to act as an evening layer that will make the surface appear more uniform. You could even try a brush on matte finish with a cheap flat brush for more control. With a spray may be too thin unless you only want a finish

the hands could be magnetized, that's how I'd go about it. I think the hands in that barbie doll are plastic and I've never worked on putting magnets in palstic before, but for big, unwieldy hands like that it's what I do.

Snag some Mr Hobby flat topcoat in the blue can. If you can get it the Mr Hobby Premium topcoat in the teal can is the best but hard to find. It'll make cheap plastic look like figma factory picture quality.

Here's a continuation of developing that one coomerfig I made a few months ago. I kinda hated the scale and the style of articulation on that figure so I redesigned everything from the ground up. I'm still working on a solution to smoothly blend the elbows and knees into the sculpt.

For the most part, acrylics can be used to paint over most figures provided you give it a clear coat that's either matte or semi gloss depending on how you want the finish.

As for the hair, it would help if you posted an image of the defective area so we can suggest an appropriate tool. Most bootlegs either have excessive seamlines or thick, globby paint which needs to sanded down in my experience, preferably with fine grit sandpaper.

yeah that's fine, just thin your paints, for acrylics you can use isopropyl alcohol + tap water (i don't remember the proportion), another way is getting a paint marker and leave the hand brushing for details like handles and stuff, for very small details you can use a toothpick

I remember many threads back either in /customs/ or the Shinki thread that you can melt model kit sprues with plastic cement and then shape it (the Shinki anons were using it to make bigger tuts for their FAG and MD girls, I believe). My question is if the liquified sprues can be molded using silicone molds to replicate parts of a kit? I have a blank female figure (pic related) that has a bunch of spare sprues and wanted to make modified copies of parts like the face and chest.

You don't have to specifically use plastic cement. Acetone or MEK might work if you're on a budget.
Look up Sprue Goo molding on youtube.
Be warned though, it's a lot of waiting for plastics to melt and harden even if you're using some other solvent to melt the plastics.

If you're not particularly interested in literal Doom designs McFarlane has released some bonkers looking Warhammer40k and The Witcher monsters. Pic related could look really menacing and fit right not the whole Doom demon thing with the right paint job.

Finished customizing Pattinson Batman. Mostly a simple suit repaint, the paint looks better than the bare plastic I think but I may have mixed the grays here a touch dark. It gives him the right kinda look on a full bright shelf like this though, and the matte finish helps separate it from the boots and cowl which thankfully come off much darker. More work than I expected him to be, and his belt isn't taking silver paint or sharpie too well, but he'll do just fine for me.

Sculpt first, clothing if the sculpted figures don’t exist or are too cost-prohibitive is generally how most do it. If you’re handy with resin and molds another option is to splurge on the figure(s) needed, cast resin copies of sculpted parts, then resell the original figures to recoup most of the cost. Essentially the difference in money you lose in the process is like a ‘rental’ fee for the figure. Sometimes you can break even on figure costs or even make a slim profit depending on if you ge a good deal.

I’ve been eyeing a few figures that would make good templates for DOOM-esque designs, not 1:1 from the game but in that style.

ML Kro, ML Surtur (Cyberdemon), that spider-thing from Witcher, Neca Aliens and Genestealers for fodder parts to unify the designs.

One anon earlier mentioned using Kro as an Arch-vile and I think a Genestealer head would work, maybe with a closed mouth. Some chitin-armor sculpted over Kro’s musculature should make for a fun project.

Hello friends. I have a blank figma bootleg that I'd like to turn into something, but I need to repaint the joints black. For some reason, every seller is either out of stock or selling basic black joint sets for like, 60 bucks?? I realize that articulation brings the risk of chipping paint so what's the best way to go about repainting joints without clogging them with paint?
