Reality is, merch takes time to make- sign the deals, work out prototypes, get stores interested, get the factories, produce, ship to stores. Half these cartoons end before anything can get out, the networks won't bother with merch for a dead show. It can also be hindered by being unable to find an interested company to make the merch or a lack of interest from stores. Few companies bother with DTC marketing even now.
Calvin & Hobbes was the same few stories over & over. It was repetitive & Waterson had a way too high opinion of his work. Nor does making a toy of something from it devalue it. The guy was just a fucking prick.
