Hey /toy/
Might be a british thing here but any of you remember these?
Back in 2010 there was a huge round up of Gollywogs in our town and everyone burned them for being 'racist'.
Now the remaining few just so happen to be collectors items. Any other examples of this? A toy/plush discontinued for some culture reason which ended up just making it more valuable?

I'm a black bong and I remember these as well as the jam jars. My grandads 2nd wife's daughter also used to collect them.

I actually walked into a local crafts store selling homemade toys about 2 years ago and I couldn't believe they were still making and selling them. My wife and I couldn't stop laughing.

I remember them, still see them sometimes too, my town never had a mass burning though since most people don't seem to care not even the small black community we have here.
In fact there was a house I would see on my way to work everyday that had one in the window of their bedroom.

From the OP pic they have a certain charm to them, but it just seems like they are either a gag gift or for niche collectors. Either way glad I got to learn what a gollywog is.

You don't really need the inverted commas; they were racist, just not in any malicious way. I myself was an avid collector of pic related as a child. Burning golly dolls sounds completely unnecessary (definitely never happened near me), but it made sense to stop making them.

They were reasonably common throughout the 80s and 90s in New Zealand. Sort of fell off for obvious reasons but you can still find them around the South Island. Not uncommon at second hand stores.
