I tend to get multiples of cars I really like, usually ones I like to play with and know might get damaged from stuff like falls and boosters too much. I wouldn't hoard 100 at the same time as a scalper, but I'd make sure I'd have enough stunt doubles for a film, if you catch my drift.

Look at it like this:
The Gulf livery has been put on some of the world most venerated race cars. If you ask someone an iconic racecar and it wasn't from F1, chances are it has either a Marlboro livery, a Gulf livery, or for modern people Red Bull. Sure the Lotus colors of different decades is iconic and Mercedes being the ones known for silver arrows; but that's more like a factory racing livery, not a sponsor based livery.

Maybe you just like cars with more personalized liveries like what old stock cars of the '50s used to be, I don't know. Most people tend to gravitate towards they brand themed liveries because again, the historical association of that livery. I don't mind the Gulf theme if done right, however like the Red Bull colors, youthful dipshits overuse it and marketing just loves to oversaturate merchandise with those colors.

Any others you'd recommend? I've always wanted something cool based off of an old stainless-steel panel motorcoach like they made up until the 80s. My dad used to work on them and sometimes he'd take us to his garage. I had the ferrari and nascar team sets. They were so damn cool; the blue pontiac grand prix #44 was my favourite. The fact that you could actually store the cars in the trailers was neat. I gave them to my cousin which still store them with all other micro machines in the tin box (pic related) i gave him. I also got this lovely couple. Shame the big boy has a bit of a rear axle issue. This happens with most raised off roader castings nowadays and I really wished the QC wasn't so sloppy. Just opened these a few hours ago and barely did much outside of pictures and already the paint is starting to chip.

What's funny is how traditional paint remover has trouble with new paints now, yet the sweat of the human hand can deteriorate it in less than a few hours. Mattel what damn chemical mixtures are you using to make paint this finicky?

I can tell what >>9612601 meant by Roadster Bite looking a bland and unoriginal. It looks like you took 3 early 2010 castings and threw them in a blender, and didn't hit the puree button. It lacks it's own identity and reminds me of more distinct castings like Imparable.

The description of it being based on a snake gives me wannabe Viper vibes, which was already done better with Ballistik and Muscle & Blown. Its livery doesn't help, it has the, "Too Toyetic Syndrome" that I feel most of the 2010 fantasy castings had; where it picks the obvious attention grabbing colors like one should expect, but creates an effect of it being tacky because of the plastic body and odd blends of colors. (Can we just stop with making track cars have orange tires? Why not just go with rims in orange or just do what early 2000s Track Aces did and have a less scatterbrained palette?)

I will give it credit, I do like the blue variant even if I couldn't find it. Plus its probably really good for the track given the somewhat balanced shape.

The main problem is we're at a point now that Hot Wheels have made so many designs over the years that it's hard to be original. You can introduce complexity, like in the case of the Steam Punk Truck, but then you wouldn't be able to mass-produce it. Car design itself has plateaued, so it's not really as though you could make fictional designs based on portmanteaus of the era like in the '00s, so what HW are doing now (and I'm glad they are) is making fictionalized retro designs like the Dimachinni Veloce, GT-Scorcher and Erikenstein Rod.

You mentioned the Ballistik in particular, and I find that interesting, because I find proto-Acceleracers designs like that and 16 Angels to be the beginning of the end for fictional HW car design. Ever since the Acceleracers, every second fictional design put out by HW has been some ultra-sleek, all-plastic curvy lump of aggressive nothingness, because they know it worked the first time.

I think the #1 car to be blamed (though the Power Pipes was introduced the same year), is pic related, the Power Pistons. Terry Choy, if you look at the rest of the work he did, was evidently a big fan of a certain superhero's personal transport and based its design off of it. That design (along with Power Pipes) became a massive success and set the blueprint for future fictional castings.

But one could argue these castings specifically are like the 2000s castings? They're some of the first in awhile to look like cars of believable design that take obvious inspiration from real cars people loved.

I don't think it was around Acceleracers when the ball was dropped. I pin the major shift in the brand around 2012-2013. Almost everything you see from the last decade had been starting to get phased out.

I feel stuff like Speed Blaster were more of the genesis of modern fantasy, as it's taking contemporary super car design and fusing it with a hot rod attitude. Heck even if the '80s was a weak period in the brand's life, stuff like Shadow Jet and Sol Aire CX-4 are the style of fantasy we eventually got in the '90s and 2000s.

We never got an S13 style casting.
Things like XB Falcons or early Monaros are interesting cars Mattel barely touches.

They used to not just make one casting off a real car, but several back in the day. Rapid Transit and Fast Fish are all inspired by stuff like the Plymouth Barracuda. Super Tsunami and Track Tune are different takes on a Supra style design with riced up modifications. You could probably have a dozen fantasy castings which are obvious Mustang customs and clones. (Rivited, Boulevard Bruiser, Pony Up, and Fast Fish to some degree for examples.)

Quite the opposite honestly, this was the last Bel Air Gasser on the pegs. I managed to get 3 of the Bel Airs from this year, one was a dud and all 3 were the last of their kind on the peg.
The Tooned' Golf was a pegwarmer though. Saw around 4-6 Golfs. I can already tell what the pegwarmer this time will be.

Much the same. The store I usually find a fuckload of cars in got rid of their dump bin, which was the best spot to find cars with how barren Wal Mart and Target have become. I had to go to a different lesser supermarket to find pegs with any life on them and even then it wasn't a dump bin. My safe spot for collecting is now gone and now I have to find a new one.
It's like the companies are trying to get people out of the hobby that makes said businesses millions.

Reminder that collectors lost their shit when Mattel bought MBX because of the thought that Mattel would choke MBX out like they did with Corgi a few years prior. Personally I don't want MBX rims on a mint HW car. Just customize it if you don't like that.

They have the power to change the colour of the wheel so they could have used the wheels I have & just painted them black. Making my mod if they used the wheels at the factory all that more accurate. But they used some flat unrelated wheels for the car itself & they still are.

Also its a work in progress. So it's not a final Mod.

I plan on using a different set of real Rider Wheels. Deep dish type. I'm going to sand down the plastic wheels to the edge of the rim & place the rim into the Real Rider Wheels then colour them black.

I mean what did you think part of the reason people hated MBX's 2004 year was about? Think from the perspective of a guy who collected this stuff for decades, where the it was consistently good minus the '70s.
It doesn't help when MBX lost alot of its notoriety because of HW to begin with. Before HW, a toy car was coloquially called a Matchbox; that changed when Mattel introduced their toy cars in '68. Ever since Matchbox just lives in the shadow as the boring cars brand.

Kids who liked Matchbox instead of Hot Wheels after HW's rise to popularity are by default oddballs, because it says something when the kid doesn't want a fun colorful toy based on a real car that's been customized to hell and back. Now MBX is probably better off thanks to having marginally better QC and overall nicer looking stuff compared to HW. (Fitting because I'd argue the '80s was HW's worst period and MBX's slow return to being good after the mess of the '70s)

I just found 4 cases of my old hot wheels from when I was a kid. Looks to be around 200 cars.
I have $30 in my bank account and I'm desperate to make rent for April.

Anyone else hate how obnoxious Hot Wheels or car enthusiasts can be commenting on whatever Matchbox does or releases on some instagram blogs like THunted? Stuff like lack of interior and recent recolors for carryforwards instead of older ones for 5 packs sucks (Mattel is to blame for cheapening it, hate this trend), but I've seen some of the most inane complaints of Matchbox making common cars which is boring (like that isn't their bread and butter to begin with and I like the variety and realism of what cars you see more on the road than just the coolest looking cars), and even complaints of EVs happening more this year and that's the end of the brand?? (Yeah EV cars are going to be a common thing and already are, doesn't mean other cars aren't going to be made into new castings in the future), and even the complaints of the Lexus LS not having a lower stance??? This isn't supposed to be a lowrider, looks perfect.

I love Matchbox a lot, same with Hot Wheels. G and H case looks like they're loaded with a lot of quality recolors and new castings (Lindsay Lee is becoming my favorite designer, that Lucid Air and GMC Hummer EV look fucking nice, she also made the Kia Stinger, I fucking love Kia's designs), but I think so far Matchbox has won in 2022. Kind of annoying how some fans want Matchbox to exactly be like them with constant exotic and sports cars with real riders and chases that are overrated and don't roll as well (though Matchbox Collectors ironically are better to me than Hot Wheels Premium since they do feel less sticky when rolling them), Matchbox has tried to be like Hot Wheels on the fantasy side twice under Mattel, it was the worst times for the brand since Tyco. Matchbox should ditch working rigs and sky busters and maybe they'd have more budget focus to not sacrifies interiors and bring back old casting recolors we haven't seen in the past few years. Besides that, they're the best they've been since Ryu Asada's reign in the 2000's.

Though diecast in general is very varied that I say it is a golden age, as long as the Metal/plastic doesn't feel flimsy like Maisto's do due to their 75 cent budget (I still collect them sometimes lol), I personally don't care if everything isn't metal/metal.

Second and only pick up from 2022 serie, the first one was the gray 500E. Both really lucky strickes considering many cases completly skipped, most likely an employee cleaning the cases, fuckers stealing cars (a big problem here). Damn even fantasy casting aren't spared.

Some resin for the bed is fine, doesn't have to be printed either.
Swapping wheels is perhaps on of the easiest custom jobs. (Unless you're me and you want to replace axles without needing glue and tubes)
I don't care if this is hyperbole, modding diecasts is less about skill and more about monetary and time investment than anything else. That's why Gaslands was blew up, it was piss easy for people to do.

Not really. Most releases have different color/wheel combos, and the Hot Wheels Wiki generally has pictures of almost everything listed by year. All you have to do is match things up.

Here's the problem, they don't always have pictures of some variants like you'd expect them too. Plus that site gets edited so often that bullshit flies under the radar and you get things that don't belong anywhere on the page yet somehow have been there for months without a soul spotting it. With how many toys they have to work with, they still haven't gotten pages for all the mini-toylines and playsets.

Really, I wish more info on sets was on the wiki, since it would help people when they want to try and find it by name, especially the more obscure stuff. This fandom has so much autism and yet no one weaponizes it for the betterment of everyone. If I had the data and an account I'd do it myself. (Then get banned because the wiki is probably run by massive control freaks who 'nuh uh' anything they aren't familiar with regardless if it's true or false)

I've used the wiki to ID the release year for almost every car I had as a kid. Even where there aren't pictures, the descriptions are usually enough to pin down the listing as long as you have a vague idea of when your car was released. Seems reliable enough, but whatevs.

Finally got a decent car transporter truck in the form of this Scania made by Kengfai. Really great quality, lost of metal construction. Just a few issues with it like not being able to hold the doors open very well without a tool, and the cars need to be kind of low to double stack them like this. Still a pretty great buy for under $100 on ebay, and I filled it up with a few of my RLC cars.
