The brilliance of the MP is in its dynamic, almost anime-inspired look--you have the broad barrel chest contrasted with the long thin thighs, the elegantly swooping calves, the high shoulders to give him that imposing spread, and a 10/10 headsculpt.
SS86 looks so bland, like they sucked all the flair and coolness out of him. All his limbs just feel thick and stodgy, and either his arms are too long or his legs are too short. The chest no longer tapers in at the bottom like the MP, so he feels fat and tubelike. I don't like the headsculpt personally, it feels squashy and limited, like it was sculpted within the constraints of a cube. And the gold and red look freakin awful, super cheap and nasty looking and bring down the look of the entire toy. They feel Playskool-esque. And I am completely perplexed as to what you mean by "cleaner backpack," it has the same backpack as the MP and practically every other Grimlock, just the entire head sitting on the back.
Now, I don't own the SS86, so I can't comment on the playability or joints. It may well be better than the MP, the MP is admittedly too hard-ratcheting and not that fun to pose in the legs. But just looks-wise? Nah, this ain't it.
