I find it ironic that this got full support on Lego ideas back in the day, but they didn’t go through with it, but now, they’ll make it.

Vintage stuff might be overpriced, but it's because they're very cool and hard to find in good condition. You can always buy the new stuff when it comes out, but vintage won't be getting any cheaper if you ever want it.

Do a bit of both. Maybe just buy some iconic vintage pirate parts and make a classicly styled MOC if you don't want to straight up buy a set.

picrel is IMO the best value vintage pirate set. You get a good smattering of vintage parts, an island baseplate, classic figures, and you can get it for literally $70-$75 which seems heinously cheap. Buy that and a raised baseplate for $40 and you could make your own pirate island base for under $150. That's comparable to the creator pirate ship, and significantly cheaper than the barracuda bay.

I really don't think most vintage lego is 'overpriced' when you consider new large lego sets are $200-350 on the regular, and a 25 year old classic set can still be had for sub $150. The pirate ships and sets with raised baseplates are inflated in price because the sail conditions are hard to find, and baseplates are awesome, but you can just buy one seperate. If you want a boat, just get the bay.

It's one of my top 5 for sure, and the fact it is a good value is icing on the cake. It's the first non ship set I'd look into getting if I was collecting.

According to secondary average market, it has over $200 of value packed into a $70-$80 set.

Palm tree, two long rigging, mast, large pirate flag, multiple minifigs worth $10, monkey, parrot, island plate, cool vintage stairs.. the density of awesome vintage stuff is insane. It is the perfect pirate base MOC starter pack, and noone can change my mind.

Compare to picrel's price which is nearly $250 instead of $75, one is the obvious value winner.

So last thread people were talking about Mixel joints and how they only come in light/dark bluish grey, but it got me thinking on two things:
1) Why don't they at least alternate the colors of which parts come in dark grey and which come in light grey? The bottom left one has seen a few releases in Dark Bluish Grey, but it's 9 sets vs the 400+ it's shown up in light bluish grey.
2) The tow bar is mostly in dark grey and trans orange via Nexo Knights, but it's seen a few releases in Red/Dark Red/Orange. If the word from lego is "We can't do Mixel joints in other colors because the pieces break" then how come this much smaller piece that's functionally similar to two of the mixel joint pieces can be released in other colors?

I have both 6270 and 6273 and think they're both excellent sets. 6273 definitely feels a lot more substantial and special with that raised base-plate though and warrants the price difference imo.

Those pirate bases are some of my favorite sets, and overlooked compared to the ships. I do want to add a Perilous Pitfall to my collection as well, but those later pirates sets are hard to get a hold of. Pre-covid, I had a chance to buy a unopened one for $200, but the price has basically doubled, as is the case with most vintage sets.

The older and bigger a set is, the more I value having the box, and I am absolutely willing to pay a significant premium for a set with the box at this point. Original boxes and instructions are easily damaged and only getting rarer.

With the flaps, luckily my parents had the foresight to at least cut and keep some of the front flaps off, even if it wasn't the whole thing. Can you tell what I liked as a kid?... I am very happy to have at least something from them.

Now the prized pieces of my collection are having original boxes for the Blacktron I base, the M-Tron Mega Core Magnetizer, adventurer's anubis temple, and the unitron monorail. I'm still looking for an OG box for the Aquanaut base, just to have for my fav set of all time. I once sold a sealed copy for $150 and it hurts to think about.

For some reason I've found it easier to find boxes for space stuff rather than castle or pirate, I think those are just more widely popular and cherished, so more expensive.

Those series two pirate sets with the armada are for some reason so, so much rarer and expensive, the most I have of them are the interesting color pirate ship hulls, and the $50 fig with the chrome breastplate. I'll make some custom ships with the hulls one day rather than buying the sets.

honestly I tossed most of my instructions too. Wish I hadn't. The ones I still have from my childhood are very damaged too and missing pages, and most are all fucked up just because they were stored in areas with moisture and the papers are all deformed and starting to fall apart.

So many regrets honestly, I had some expensive sets too when I was a kid like black seas barracuda and many other classic pirate sets that were either thrown out or lost during the many times I moved as a kid.

The awkward thing is that the boxes alone aren't worth a whole lot, and hence a PITA to sell alone, but when selling with a good condition set it can act as a value / premium multiplier, especially for the giant sought after sets.

Your boxes are a great example of something I'd love to own, but likely isn't worth the shipping cost or effort on your part to sell, like you mentioned. You could flatten them all and sell as a lot, but it'd likely just cover the shipping cost.

A lot of my OG bionicle canisters met a similar fate - I basically asked if anyone wanted to pay for shipping and sent them all to a collector, as the alternative was a recycling bin. Worth more than garbage, but also partially charity work to get rid of.

I've been selling my entire lego collection on ebay. pic related, though that amount of money is WITH shipping and without fees. In reality I've made closer to $13k since a few thousand of that is shipping and a few thousand is ebay fees which is close to 13% these days.

Worst part about ebay though, they are charging fees based on your final value PLUS shipping and fucking taxes. It's complete and utter bullshit.

Ah, that's a little sad to me, I specifically look for listings with boxes and am willing to pay a premium. For example, if you had the box for that sphinx set, I'd actually be interested in it rather than totally ignoring. I've seen hundreds sold, and a box only pops up once every few years, same goes for most anything from the 90's or older.

Ebay is good for a quick buck with high fees, BL is better for the long haul. You can set a price and forget it. If you are patient, it can be way more lucrative, just depends on how desperate you are for cash.

I've been buying and selling LEGO actively for over a decade so I have a cache of boxes to reuse, it only becomes a real problem once you get into 2ft + dimensions, and even then, I just re-use the same boxes TLG sent to me. You are right though, it is certainly costly and not optimal.

As far as ebay fees go, if you are feeling scammed, you should try Bricklink. They only charge 3-5% fees and you have more control over your store setup and how you charge for shipping. I'm more likely to shill for BL as it's how I've sustainably made sales similar to your 90 day total there for years on end.

Take care, and don't feel bad for selling things, it just means you have money to buy more lego if that's what you're into.

I just built the Razor Crest and for around 90 Euros I'd say it was a pretty good deal. managed to fuck up the stickers on the engines but nobody would even notice. height of the whole thing was when the two main parts clipped together at the end of bag 3. figures are also nice, glad to finally have a scout trooper and an IG droid.

I got the new speed champions lambo yesterday and it is pretty great. I would have preferred black or red, but the white is pretty clean. I don't care for having thirteen goddamn stickers to meticulously place, though.

The part in the build where you attach the air intakes and shift them into position was the most insanely satisfying moment I have experienced in building lego from instructions.

This is my first high end Lego set. Got it new for $70 online.

I got to bag 3 and hand to stop.
Holy shit I didn't think there would be so many steps, till I saw that fat manual.

Im going to try to get my hands on the F&F Dodge Charger now.

why do you think the countach is more iconic in red?
curious as the majority i've seen the countach mentioned was the 80's one in white
(biased, as my grandpa had a model of it and very early in life i loved the look of the black trim with white paintjob)
In film people mostly remember the black Cannonball Run one.
