For me it's army building.
>have a limited vintage toy that exists in finite capacity
>buy up multiple quantities of that same exact model or figure
>line them all up side by side in a sea of monotony
>create artificial scarcity in the vintage toy market for an item that's already limited and hard to find
>now a fee dozen collectors will have a hard time completing their own collection because you're hoarding one of the missing pieces
Biggest dick move a toy collector can make. And for what? Why do toy collectors do this for limited vintage toys that are already pricy and hard to come by? It drives me nuts.
Pic related is a "small" army of 23 Sawtooth Shark Battle Beast figures that appear to be complete and in near-mint condition. They currently go for about $50 a pop like this. So just this part of this guy's collection is worth at least $1500 if you count the carded set in the back. That's at least 20 collectors that will be forced to pay more or struggle to find this figure to complete their collection. It's straight up obnoxious.
