it's probably one of the most healthiest threads on this board so I have been pretty determine to keep this one going while I refresh another thread I've been consistently the op for.

I collect a lot of sofubi but ziqi was my first and one of my favorites, I have been fortunate enough to get some hand drawings from him for winning two different lottos. I really want to continue sharing the joy of discovering new sofubi.

I think its base coated in silver and then something more akin to molotow chrome is used and then its sealed with a clear.

I work in jewelry so my knee jerk reaction is this might be rhodium but with the riser cost of that stuff and the fact that it would require multiple coats that the plastic might not survive I'd have to say its the paint method.

God I love Mutant Vinyl Hardcore. I have every release, I love everything Rich Montanari Jr. Puts out. I wish I could smell his seat after he's put hours into painting a sixty plus figure run. I want to lick the sweat off his brow as he holds the air brush steady to make his magnificent art on traditional Japanese sofubi. If there was one thing I had enough money for it would be to hire MVH to sculpt something. Not anything, but Nikocado Avocados beautiful axe wound of an ass. Rich would sculpt it with such purpose. Every fold, mole, bump, hair, and stretch mark on there would be tastefully done in only a way Rich would. I love him. Then after it was done it'd be made into the hypercolor sofubi madness that only he is capable of doing.

Depends on paintjob and number of accessories. 200-400 is the range I've seen. Last one was 350 if I remember right. I think I paid 300 second hand for Sand Monk. He's actually got a lotto going right now for this guy. 200 for the figure, extra arm, two weapons, multiple heads, etc.

A mix of stuff. Mr. Hobby Laquers for the base, then acrylics for the coat over that. Then a Lacquer topcoat. Its not as indestructable as Vinyl paint, but its pretty tough.

Speaking of though, Vinyl Wonder is finally back in stock.

If nothing else their clear gloss will do wonders to insulate more fragile paints.

Nope. Its bare vinyl with Mr.Hobby, then acrylic, then a mr.hobby semi-gloss topcoat. I've tried priming, but it doesn't seem to really aid adhesion or durability. At least not in my experience. I will say though, it is sometimes good to lay down a bottom coat of something just to make the colors you spray on top of it pop. Otherwise you might not get the exact color you want. If I'm spraying black I'll often lay down a coat of silver first otherwise the colors you spray on the black will look kind of faded or darker than you probably want.

Though, if you're using actual vinyl paints like Vinyl Wonder apparently rubbing the figure down with thinner and then drying it before painting will allow for better adhesion.

This is the next thing I'm gonna paint. Not really sure what to do with him. Considering a classic "Burning" design with exposed gold, clear coat read, and then black or gray like the burning Godzillas. Seems a waste of all this nice gold though.

Man, I almost wouldn’t want to paint it. If I were to paint it my idea would be to do a gradient of silver from the bottom tapering upward into the gold, and then do metallic rainbow eyes, but that might be too chaotic. But it’s really eye catching even as a blank.

I don't do custom anything so take what i say with a barrel of salt. For a piece like that as >>9686045 said I would leave the gold mostly intact.maybe just paint the eyes and maybe the horns. Doing the horns or maybe the eyes as some orange shade could look good.

Thanks. He's actually filled with red tinsel to bulk his coloring up a bit. Hard to notice under normal circumstances but can be pretty neat in bright light.

First step is a paint rub. That where you paint the entire thing in whatever color your want and then use a rag and some paint thinner to rub most of the paint off. It will only leave paint in recessed areas, which is really good for bringing out texture. You can also get different effects depending on how much you rub it down and in what direction.

In this case I only rubbed from top to bottom.

Next is the red, which I applied with dry brushing. Dry brushing is where you get a bit of paint on your brush, wipe most off, and then brush back and forth over the surface. This puts down thin, successive layers of paint and is a good way to get gradual colors and raised surface highlights.

A lot of the dry brushing tutorials you'll find are aimed at model makers and they tend to use much less paint on their brush because they only want very faint or subtle effects. For sofubi you'll usually want more paint on your brush. Dry brush is really good for highlights and a lot of the older painters use it. James Groman for example uses a lot more dry brushing than air brushing.

I also painted the eyes black, since the flakes I used to give the eyes their "jeweled" appearance need a black background.

Oh, I should add that directionality is important when dry brushing. If you only brush from top down, you'll only highlight the top part of details. Like with paint rubs this is useful for creating highlights or shadows. Directionality in general is very important to keep in mind for 3d structures.

Anyways, after that I applied a thin layer of acrylic varnish to one eye at a time before pressing in the colored flakes. These flakes are what are called "holographic Nail Flakes" and you can find them on amazon or at beauty stores/pharmacies sometimes. They're a very fine powder of small flakes that you can apply over paint or varnish. You can dab them on a few at a time but I tend to just dip a fingertip into the powder and then press them into the varnish by hand. It gives it a rough but more "consistent" appearance where the flakes aren't individually emphasized.

After that I just topcoat the entire thing in Mr.Hobby Semi-Gloss topcoat. Comes in a spray can and is probably gonna be the most expensive paint you'd need. All the other paints are just hobby paints from craft stores. Specifically, in this case, "Golden" brand acrylics. I like their "high flow" series since you can airbrush it and also paint with it straight out of the bottle.

That top coat is very important if you use acrylics, because acrylics can -especially if airbrushed- wipe away very easily. Gotta protect them.

Thats about it for that figure. If you wanna try on your own but worry about ruining the figure, two tips.

1. Acrylics can be very easily wiped away with rubbing alcohol. Its what I use as the solvent for my paint rubs. If you dislike what you ended up with, you can always just douse the thing in alcohol and clean it up to try again.

2. There's a variety of small, and vary affordable sofubi out there. The "Who goes there" series by Unbox Industries will get you a nice little figure for about 12 bucks if memory serves. Bandai official sofubi for ultraman and godzila are also readily available and cheap. These are great things to practice and do tests on.

Oh and don't use Enamel paints on vinyl. For some reason they never seem to dry. Only type of paint I've had this issue with.

I've built and airbrushed quite a few models but have always been scared of painting sofubi because I usually use acrylics and heard there were problems with adhesion to the vinyl, but I'm definitely going to give it a shot after seeing your results

Acrylic is plastic so if you leave it on the figure with no top coat it will eventually rub off, especially if its put on with an airbrush. A top coat is essential and the tougher the better. I use mr.hobby like I said, but I have some clear gloss on the way from vinyl wonder that should be even more resistant.

With the kallaxes, ikea sells cube inserts with glass doors. Get those and a simple lighting setup where a lighting strip at the top of each cube lights the contents of the cube from the front. Use a simple diffused It will look a thousand times better for not much money.

The wooden shelf I'd just replace with a display case. There's a lot of good options out there for sofubi. If you wanna stay within ikea budgets, check out their MILSBO and install lights at the top and bottom of the cabinet

It'd only cost a few hundred to make every one of these figures look even better by improving their presentation. If you're willing to spend a few thousand there's even better options out there

Yeah, finding one might be tough. I know Vintage and Vinyl Club has a few 1000tentacle figs floating around in their catalog last I looked. However, if he ever does another drop maybe this info will help.

1. He's TERRIBLE with time. He'll routinely say "6pm" but then actually start at 5:30 to fuck over anyone who doesn't have notifications turned on for his instagram. Not sure if its intentional or not.

2. Vintage and Vinyl Club Hong Kong as well as Strange Cat toys almost always get a preorder supply of his releases. I actually missed his drop and got mine through VVCHK. A bit more expensive but not terribly so.

Judging from his responses on instagram, I'd say a reprint is in order eventually.

Yeah, those are a little too random and messy for my taste, there's no cohesion.

I only own one Grody piece but I quite like the color scheme and craggy sculpt. The one-direction spray on the pink means it highlights only the tops of the rocks, which I think looks great.

If you're trying to find a specific SHB release, it is gonna be tough. Keep your eye on Mandarake and Yahoo auctions. Alternatively, look on instagram with the right hashtags and see if you can find someone with one. Offer them a trade or flash some cash at them and they might be willing.

However, If I were you I'd just keep an eye here (https://marmit-shop.stores.jp/). He puts out new stuff every...probably 2 weeks or so? Maybe even more often. You can get some brand new figures for cheaper than resale.

The biggest issues you're gonna run into are matching the color and replicating the application, especially if it was originally airbrushed. There are a few ideas I have, but I could tell you more accurately if I can see the actual issue.

This guy is sadly pretty disappointing. That stake has no backside, just a hollow, the arms can barely move without popping from their sockets, and you need a hair dryer to even put his hat on.

Looks nice, but basically just a statue and already has some paint loss on the face straight out of the box.

I work in the retirement industry in the US and make a comfortable living. I'm by no means "rich", but still make enough to pay my bills/mortgage and have about $1k fun money each month that I spend on sofubi/figures.

Once you're a couple years into your career it's not to difficult, but yeah I can't speak as to the pay in other countries.

Acetone might be too harsh, I’d recommend first trying either 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol, or maybe buying some of the wondervinyl thinner. I’d worry that acetone would melt the vinyl

Thanks for the tips. If I can't do anything I might just buy some vintage toys to put around him and pretend it's intentional. Paint used was monster kolor

Creature Maker paintjob? You might be able to just send it to him and have him touch it up. He's a cool guy. Monster Kolor is prone to flaking if its not heavily topcoated though. If its in a place where you have a lot of fiction chances are its gonna chip again.

I'm used to sofubi paintjobs being kinda impenetrable so I articulated the joints without really thinking about it. If there's no good solution I'll probably just live with it, I don't mind it too much, just would have touched it up if it were simple.

I think you're making a pretty big mistake here man. If a paint is acrylic based you can literally remove it with soap and water. Alcohol will work just fine. The only thing you'll need vinyl thinner for is vinyl paint. Acrylic and Lacquer can both be stripped with rubbing alcohol.

Yeah I agree with this >>9730525 anon. No need to use vinyl thinner if it's acrylic. If you don't know the paint type I'd always go from least "hot" chemical and go up from there. IE start with isopropyl, then MAYBE Purple Power Superclean, and then lacquer/vinyl thinner.

I mostly use lacquer honestly. I save acrylic for paint rubs (Since its easier to remove) and details. And I give it a good coat in a lacquer or vinyl clearcoat afterwards to protect it.

Acrylic is usually ok if you paint it on, but out of an airbrush its just such a thin application that you can basically rub it of through normal handling. I will say though, it seems to stretch well, so I've never had cracking or chipping problems. I know Urethane paints can do that though. And likely any paint that gets really heavily flexed or stressed can crack. I don't usually separate the pieces I'm painting if I can help it; just so I don't have to worry about damaging them as I reassemble it.

This is a weird thing to say in this thread. Like yeah, most sofubi do have "joints," but many times it's rudimentary and only done out of necessity because of the nature of their construction. Not to mention, many times those "joints" are blocked by the sculpt or barely have any range of motion.

It's just a weird metric for sofubi.

Nah, I don't think so. It's not a metric so much as a personal preference, and for me it's not about how much articulation there is, just that it's there. I prefer things that are toyetic and I can pick up and pose a little. With most sofubi, that's just simple swivels, but little stuff like that matters to me.

That said, I make plenty of exceptions, since articulation isn't the only thing that makes something toyetic. I collect keshi because they're inherently toyetic (they're small and supposed to be carried in a pocket), some of my favorite sofubi have part swapping or gimmicks like 1000tentacles, etc.

If the "toy feel" didn't matter to me, I'd probably buy prettier things than sofubi. It's what makes me like them.

If you're feeling up to painting a blank, I say go for it. Worse that happens is you don't like it and have to spend a bit cleaning the paint off before trying again. And like I've said a few times, if anyone wants me to paint anything, I'll do it for you guys for free. But I really do suggest you giving it a shot.

I've got a four fingers myself. Great figure. I prefer the one with legs, but I take what I can get. Its sad that he seems to have transitioned away from this and that awesome bat and into the little nazi robots and stuff. Those are fine, don't get me wrong but I prefer his earlier work.

Its a piece by Unbox Industries based on art by Sam Heimer.
They only made as many as were pre-ordered during a few day window last October.
Unbox likes to do a lot of releases of their sculpts though, so I bet there will be another release eventually. Though it might be another year or two before they do.

I think this release looks great with the stickers. Try them out, and if you don't like it, you can just cleanly remove them with a heat gun. It will be easier to remove the stickers and then paint, than the other way around.

One thing I'll say as a tip: Test how your paints will look both on the vinyl and layered on each other. Bottom of the feet is a great testing site for this. Paint is difficult to get complete coverage with the same color sprayed on white will look different than if it is sprayed on black.

Good call! I’ve been using acrylics and enamels for years but this is my first foray into vinyl paints. I’m planning on basecoating with silver, and small gold accents, then layer clear green and yellow. So I’ll definitely try that candy coating on the bottom of the foot first.

My only concern is that I wanted to disassemble it before painting it, and am worried that that the paint might crack/chip when I reassemble. But from everything I’ve see vinyl paint seems insanely flexible and durable, but we’ll see

It should be fine. If you're really nervous about it, you can always paint it assembled. A lot of makers do that. Alternatively, disassemble and then reassemble it as practice to see how best to put it back together.

Oh and make sure to give your stuff at least 24 hours to dry before assembling.

Been experimenting with trying to get a good stone texture. Fairly happy with this guy but not really sure what else to do with him. I considered painting bits of raised detail to look like jewels but I feel that would be out of place on this. Might just leave him.

Patina wouldn't really make sense for stone, I think. As far as I know it only forms on bronze statues and the like. However, another form of green weathering might work...

It looks great because it's not the usual super fine flocking you see on retail toys that just makes them look velvet-coated. Anon appears to have used those tiny bits of railroad modeling foliage, giving it more dimension and depth. It was a great choice.

LOVE the glitter/flaking (as always), the only thing I don’t like is that the purple is too “one note” for me. I’m not sure if lighter shades of purple as a post-shade would make it pop more, or if using a lighter, almost pastel purple would help.

Just my 2 cents, still better than what I could accomplish for sure.

Same here as well, been trying to get into Skullbrain for a minute. Probably best to just give up at this point and just try to make these threads as good as we can.

Vinyl paints would be best. The easiest to get would be Vinyl Wonder by Wonder Goblin. You can use any paint though, Vinyl is just the most resilient. Otherwise I'd recommend Lacquer paint like mr.hobby.
