currently rescribing and repairing a lot of botched parts from a model I started when I was new to this hobby, the new godhand riegel needles are real handy right now.
just missing a 1/72 m1 abrams barrel for this project.

I can only speak on the Moon, but its basically the best HG Ive built outta about 16-20 others. Is the Metal Gear Rex kit still worth holding on to a preorder for? Yeah, it was a Mega Man X kit. I admit I don't build model kits that often, but I had fun building the Figure Rise Standard Machinedramon. It was a fun build and didn't stress at all, but X was just not fun to build and doesn't stay together very well, even with a little sanding and using the nippers carefully. I think I'll stick to Bandai kits for now, unless Moderoid kits are also not just for experienced modders as I've noticed Mazinkaiser and the Ingram from Patlabor looked pretty good

I'm dipping my toes into painting.
Right now I'm just making some minipla look better by going over the grey plastic with metallic silver.
As my needs are currently small and my skills and resources limited, I'm keeping it simple with a hand brush and acrylic paint.
The guide has almost nothing to say about handpainting, so I'm asking here.

I am thinning my paint, with a bit of water. I'm worried about getting it too thin though, so if I am in fact using a touch too much water, am I correct in thinking that it's not that big a deal and I'll just have to use a few more layers?

building up layers is much better than starting with a super thick layer.

I've heard a lot of bad things about this fucker. Does anyone here own it, and is it salvageable? If so, any tips on improving/fixing its issues? I love the look of it.

i started on his older brother the sniper version, the torso and legs are really fragile and don't move a lot, neither does the head, it's a cumbersome figure, ill tell you that. Do know that I am also a shitter, I did the bare minimum, tried my best sanding down what looked bad and stuff, but yeah, i was a tad disappointed in it, I'll do the sword guy later when I know how to paint.

That aside, I'm currently fiddling with a zaku mariner I built and never did anything with some time ago. I'm liking him with z'gok arms and kind of want to use him for detail practice. What are some commonly used scriber sizes for detailing? I'm only looking to get 2-3 to start because of the expense of decent ones.

As manufacturers go, Modelcollect is on the better side, but there were still some annoying issues like flash in awkward places and, of course, the flesh(?) colored rubber tracks. I hate rubber tracks.
Still, the experience was enjoyable enough that I want to build another Modelcollect tank right away.

That's panel lining in a nutshell, you want either very thin paint or pen/marker ink that wipes away easily. I wouldn't recommend a sharpie, a bit too dark and dry, but most any thin felt tip marker should work for a beginner. They make gundam branded ones but anything off the shelf should work, feel free to experiment with stuff off the dollar store.
Do make sure the surface is smooth, if its sanded rough or matte coated the ink will just smudge, stick and not wipe away.

are hobby nippers absolutely necessary? Mine have been delayed twice already while my kit is still in the box, gathering dust. Can't I use wire cutters for jewerly? I will be cutting the nubs with an Xacto anyways, so I do not see a problem with stressing the runners, far away from the proper piece

I've never uses high end nippers, but at this point, I don't see how they could possibly be better than some cheap straight bladed nippers.

If you're careful you'll probably be fine, nice nippers just make the process easier and less risky, potentially saving the time needed to do a lot of sanding/shaving

Some parts sometimes come prepainted, but not detail paint like mechanical parts, eyes, etc. It's more like "we sprayed this whole runner gold." I wouldn't really expect prepainting, it doesn't happen much.

The color separation is usually very good since they have so many small pieces though. Go here and scroll down about halfway:

Say what you will about the suit itself, the RG is basically the perfect entry point to RGs.

The final product, yeah, it’s kinda aesthetically dull. But the build experience, in terms of cloth piping, armor layering, etc is really great as an entry level kit, and it was better than any of the previous RG builds, Strike Gundam maybe being the exception.

Got the re release sniper version summer last year. The only complaints I have are a loose midsection, and the hip joints (which are just the shoulder joints since the frame is upside-down) should just be glued in place since moving the legs causes them to pop out way too often.
Everything else is sorta fine though, I know they fixed the shitty ankle joints which are super solid now. I just wish the plastic quality was better since the joint connecting the leg to the shoulder-hip piece is loosening as well. I bought it since I loved the look of it too but if you want it to work prepare to glue/blue-tac plenty. Personally I kind of gave up on it and will use the parts for kitbash meat for other Frame Arms kits

It might not be true but it certainly explains why all the certain you can't see the fucking gunpla listing in the Eng part of hobby search (1999) and you have to go to the Japanese original to even seen the HG/MG stuff

Though I don't really see how that would help as the scalpers and the high demand is in Japan, and people at least in US got proper states-side suppliers (directly get kit from Bandai) now.
I hear they couldn't even get the new HG green Zaku 2 now, but we (Taiwan which is right next door) pretty much got enough supply to see at least a box in every major plastic model shops.

I use three things when doing waterslides, a q-tip, a make up removal swab, and a toothpick. The make up removal swabs are nice and point and take longer to fully saturate with water.

Also the first time you work with waterslides it's a pain in the ass. The second time is easier, and the third time makes you want them for every kit.

For small ones I use a damp q-tip to pick up the entire decal, then press it against the piece, much easier than trying to slide it out onto the piece or trying to tweeze them

Let it dry for at least 30 minutes. Dont put alot of thinner/zippo fluid on the q tip. Damp but not wet. Try to clean the spot with a light once over the damp side and rub it with the dry side. Dont put much pressure either.

Use the back of the shield for practice, it's got a ton of lines. Trick is to dab the brush on the inside of the jar and let the excess off the brush. Let it sit for a second for capillary action to take affect. Let it dry 15 minutes minimum, but 20-30 is even better. Clean up with a very small amount on a q-tip. Don't press in, just let it sit on the piece and clean the excess by gently swiping.

Nope. Its from the gundam/gunpla ace magazine set. One has a javelin and the other the gundam hammer. Its all one solid color as well. White for the javelin and dark gray for the hammer set. Could just get the entry grade rx 78 full weapon set since it has those but the javelin is in dark gray.

See that Red '1' on the left, that's referring to the order limit number. Now if they haven't just added order limits to everything overnight then it seems reasonable to assume that they have had limits for a while now, I certainly remember them being mentioned on products for some time.If they already had limits then why did they get slapped down? If they didn't then why wasn't adding limits good enough? The explanation doesn't make any sense if what I've shown is true and there's clearly more going on

For the record I'll note that while Hobby Search also has listed limits on items, they're very inconsistent. The GP01 RD that went up this week has a listed limit of 1( https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10719873 ) but the Strike Gundam RD that went up the same day has no listed limited ( https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10869317 ) and the recently released RD Zaku 2 JC Ver Anime(which I chose because it's description text would have been entered months ago) has 3 ( https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10819339 ). As far as I can tell any limits being listed or not being listed is consistent with what's on their JP side's pages. I could see Bandai getting on their case about the inconsistency if their only applying limits sometimes but that's fixable. That said, Hobby Search is already willing to put limits on some things, doing it for everything is possible, if they put limits on everything that would just bring them in line with AmiAmi who also pulled their Bandai Kits, clearly something else is going on
