What are the different heads used for Toa? I only knew of the first head, the Glatorian head, and the G2 head. What are peoples’ preferred head to use?

The metru one was the most common in the sets themselves and it's what you'll probably see most in mocs. It's the one that can fit the greatest number of masks and it has a ball joint.
The original head has more color options (for both eyes and face) but it can't fit later masks well, and the way it connects can make implementing articulation difficult sometimes.
Nothing else really worth bothering with except maybe custom ones

Wished Lego would have made some sort of universal head that can fit any mask, the Metru head kind of does that but still wish I could fit Inika and G2 masks on one head, especially for rpgs

Man, G2 mask connection was weak as hell. By design I mean. I hate it. With the metru and glatorian heads you could grab the head by the mask without worry and move it around.

That was intended, since they where trying to make it as much like 01 as possible, and in 01 part of the play mechanic was knocking off the masks, so I'm glad they did it

I know but I still dislike it. They're fairly useless as building pieces because of it. Yes, some people moc with them. But they make the kinds of mocs that mostly look good from an angle and are not for handling.

I don't remember where I read this, and it could just simply be a rumor, but I heard that the first metru wave wasn't supposed to be a flashback, it was originally going to be new forms for the Toa Mata, hence why Nuju had a scope like Kopaka and Matau had double blades like Lewa Nuva.

most sets are designed before they even decide who they're going to be or how they fit into the story. hence why the mahri look nothing like the inika, the phantoka/mistika don't look like the nuva, etc.

all of those 2016 sets sucked, with Umarak as the lone exception, and not really? I'm not a fan of metallic-heavy characters, so the Nuva felt like a straight downgrade from the originals

I feel you there, that is one thing I hated once 04 came, all the colours became so dark, and metallic started showing up everywhere, sadly a sign of how times changed

Just didn't vibe with them, or much of anything in 2005 aside from the titans. The Visorak sucked, the Hordika sucked, I've never liked system lego, so the playsets were a waste of that year's budget. I was so unimpressed with the whole year that I nearly dipped out of Bionicle, but I rubberbanded so fucking hard when the Piraka came out

Hey, we only got names for six of the Rahkshi types and their Kraata in canon, with 36 varieties left unnamed. Even when we got the Heat Vision Rahkshi toy in Stars, we never got a name for it (who else hated that choice BTW?). So, based on the existing names and information in the link below, for those who need a refresher on the myriad of different Kraata powers, do you have any ideas? My best suggestion is that, since Shadow as an element as the "Kra" prefix in the Matoran language, Darkness Kraata should be Kraata-Kra, though the name for the Darkness Rahkshi itself eludes me. Or has anyone else gone and named them already, and if so, where can we find this?

When they came out, the toy shop that I went to had the visoraks and some unsold vahki on the shelf, so I always thought that the vahki kept them as pets/beasts of battle. Probably because they both began with v.

Nokama's is a 3D printed mask, not sure what you mean by switching out the kanohi. I have a soft spot for toa metru among all other bionicle builds, so I wanted to keep the builds somewhat faithful to the original ones, with slight improvements. But yeah custom toa builds always sicker than standard plug-n-play ones

Personally, I like Kharahk as the name for Darkness Rahkshi. Some of the officially named Rahkshi use slightly altered forms of their Kraata names (e.g. Cu -> Kurahk), so Kra -> Kha fits right in. And it being a palindrome highlights the fact that this particular breed is just Darkness with Darkness filling.

That was purely retroactive/coincidental. Nektann was a name from 2006 that bzp lore autists got Greg to canonize as a name for a character around 2008, so when a random Skakdi showed up in 2010 they just said that was him.
There were supposedly some ideas for the name of the yellow one behind the scenes, Cirahk or something.

In their favor, Visorak are easily some of the most individually unique clone sets there were, nowhere near the Vahki where literally every piece save the weapons was the same. Also the first wave since 2002 to not just be "main color+gray." I think there was really just clone fatigue at that point, but they were definitely not worse than the Vahki.

Best to avoid lime sockets and the thin glatorian ones, otherwise you should be able to get cracking. Sometimes I pick up a $10-15 technic set for new pieces and inspiration. Having a bag of random masks is good too for inspiration.
I only dismantle my mocs if I need to steal a few pieces from them and I deem whatever new I'm working on more worthy. Even then I keep the half-dismantled moc together and throw it back in the bin. This also might be why I have so many half-finished mocs...

Very nice Roodaka anon. I like the waist tubes going into the nuva armor. Worth noting that she looks sexy while not being too coomer-ish, a good representation of the character I'd say. She LOOKS like a femme fatale. I prefer the clawed feet though, I picture them more as reptilian than just high heel shoes.

yes, the inika masks being "organic" was greg's idea. you may also notice some similarities between the inika and the piraka, namely the rubber masks, zamor launchers, and weird feet. based on some concept art that only surfaced a couple years ago, it seems that originally the inika and piraka were based on the same design. you got the zamor launcher, flipping weapon gimmick, and the piraka claw feet on this guy. the piraka being initially mistaken for toa in the story might have been inspired by this.

Bohrok were a masterwork of play functionality, and that excused their identical design. You had

Of course the tradeoff is we got 12 of them instead of just six, but the gap from these guys to the "literally just shoots discs" and "literally just shoots rhotuka" (gimmicks that the respective toa also shared, rather than being unique) is a yawning canyon. Flavorwise I do like the Visorak, they're kinda cute spider assholes who literally just go around mutating entire islands for giggles, but the sets are super underwhelming and the new parts are barely usable for MOCs.

They are similar to the rahkshi but shoot disks (that are really well incorporated into the head).
They got good weapons and colours too.

The disc shooting was alright because the discs were collectable and had different graphics on them instead of just generic ammunition, was also the first time that we saw a projectile weapon. It all went to shit with the spinners and zamor sphere launchers, we never got a canister set again without a dumb variation of a projectile shooting weapon. I wouldn't mind if they kept innovating with the other play features, more stuff like pohatu's drill claws turning into helicopter blades, etc. But they just got lazy, the central focus of the sets became shooting gimmicks, and that was that.

I think the Rhotuka spinners were the worst offender, you needed that huge, dumb looking stick to use them, which you couldn't even store on the set without making it look dumb and it was impossible to actually hit anything with them
the only set that incorporated rhotukas well was based Keetongu

The barraki are the worst offenders in my opinion, those barely functional gummy squid crossbows, I only bought mantax and takadox. But the zamor spheres really set off this trend of projectile weapons as central component of the sets (accounting for a portion of the cost and development time that could've gone towards bulking out the sets).

At this point, it would be hit or miss just because of the woke politics alone. Take that with any other animators/projects, we can tell they are plenty willing to cut projects in half or even entirely.

Being that the game looks like it could be salvaged into something like a Metroid game with powers and real character interaction (hell because of the feel and textures working in that case you could even have mods for story and/or npc characters for actual exposition)

Current kids ARE into series and story interactions like anime, so really it isn't the problem of them accepting something like MNOGG or even a streamlined Bionicle story from anyone with half a cohesive tone.

The problem is that Faber and others started out from a environmentalist bent when they took inspiration for Bionicle so looking at their wokist tone isn't just pointers for how they might have atrophied in ability to hold Bionicle but in that they'd likely just crash the ship worse than 2014 since they were "Trying" to make a more streamlined bionicle that wasn't hippie/danish environmentalist bunk by making it more Incan/Aztec in theme.

That was the main stamp of detail and quality making those older sets look like functional warrior machines, the pieces coming together like the actual parts of a real robot.

Bionicle was literally being promoted with a possibility of an anniversary set and fan game. That was what I meant as Tahu was about the most elevated and level headed takes of G2 but otherwise the oversimplified plot and minimalist approach to the over-world (despite getting a story/artbook brought onto the scene).

I think the 2015 Toa were very good honestly. they brought back the gear function and the dual weapon functionality from the Nuva and Metru sets without sacrificing posability and they did a better job of looking like the original Toa Mata than either their 2002 or 2008 forms from G1
they did the best they could with the pre-existing CCBS parts - of course they couldn't make the sets look as robotic as G1 using mainly hero factory parts, but they did incorporate a few new, more robotic-looking parts and tribal-pattern prints and stickers as a nod to the G1 aesthetic

The only Toa I prefer over the 2015 sets are the Mata and maybe the Metru, I think they're much better sets than the later G1 Toa (I do have a soft spot for some of the Mahri though)

It started with seeds in canon like that, but it has gotten more and more notable because many Bionicle fans are very nomadic and have gone to other communities that have traded these issues and brought them to places like Twitter/Reddit/Pol where it then transfused into conflicting cultures.

In the case of Twitter, it is the Pronoun crowd that people are ragging on because they recently banned some modders from contributing with the Cranny Bio Fan game.

6-8 years if lego doesn't put out another constraction set, and the community doesn't do anything. the mata nui fangames will push that back even further, and at that point it wouldn't surprise me if enough folks got together to start up a 3rd party continuation, which I think would be a win-win, Bionicle folks will no longer need to interact with the lego community at that point

At this point, on of the most iconic things about Bionicle are the villains and by far the Piraka (as seen with those molds seen above) would be fun to MOC with custom molds since people like the idea of coming up with molds for masks, it would be rich to do the same with Piraka faces.

Is this a good first Hero Factory? $5 new and bagged on my local classifieds. I been reading up and wanted to try find one with a cool dinosaur head like jawblade, flyer/splitter/tunneler/crystal beast etc but my options are limited. This one seems interesting for the non standard body and I really like the wings. I noticed there's a couple motorcycles in the line as well, I was panning to use Thoraxx for a mount for my bionicles lol. Those bikes look cool though.

In my experience just buying locally, bionicle/hero factory of all kinds usually under $10. Maybe I'm fortunate there is no autistic collectors in my area but for the most part they are treated as junk, with full bionicles and scraps thrown in randomly with lego.

Yeah, basically you need a guy with very little or no social media presence or history running the show. The question then arises, how does one gain the essential exposure? You could go ahead and write the best material in the world and have the best ideas for the revival of the series, but it's just a pass time hobby if it's all locked away in the bedside cabinet never to see the light of day.
You'd need someone fully committed, regardless of what other people thought, regardless of the death threats or reception. Basically you'd need someone who isn't a "yes" man, and who isn't afraid to cut off the rotten grafted appendage that represents half of the existing fanbase, and move the story and aesthetics towards a clear and very singular focus. Basically the second coming.

What's the qrd on these Bohrok Bionicles? Was looking through the database of sets and these little SD style chibi guys caught my eye. I like the look of the original 2002 ones over the 2003 Bohrok-Kal versions and I got the opportunity to get them for cheap. Are they worth it? Matorans kind of look goofy I find, Are these the best option for little mini bionicles?

Yeah, they're kinda small and compact. They have great play features like the headbutt, krana, and the ability to fold into a ball. I'd recommend just picking 2 colors that you like and buying a couple of them each. I wouldn't say that you need all six (or 5).
They are the best bionicle sets in my opinion, so go for it if you can get them for cheap.

Right, yeah they'll definitely scratch that itch. They are compact and are great as a little swarm. Better than the visorak spiders etc. If you're just getting into it the bohrok are definitely a good place to start. They stand about half as tall as a bog standard toa, and fold into a tennis ball sized roller.

The greatest problem here is that the people in question are either Millennials or Zoomers, the former being only capable of ruining the stuff the previous generation made out of being hipsters; and the later of which having been denied the ability to develop creative skills needed to do the very thing this fanbase, and by proxy any small cult fanbase of a 2000s property has to do if they want to carry on the legacy.
Believe me, if this alone wasn't one of the biggest hurdles, we'd be far past the point of stagnation and on our way to becoming the next generation of storytellers and creative minds.

I've been meaning to make a thread discussing this very thing (I just don't know which board would be best for it) but if you look at the creatives of the generation eg the red letter media crew, Ben Yahtzee crowshaw, AVGN, Doug Walker, TGWGs crew, what do they all have in common?
they are known for critique of others work, but there own creations are subpar

And this is extremely depressing given the fact they grew up with some of the most creative works in culture, and they now have easier access to the tools that are needed for creating something
now as for the zoomers they still have a chance but unfortunately with how social media favours quantity over quality, they'll most likely suffer the same fate
Bionicle can still be saved, not with Lego as much as some think, but with the folks whom grew up with it, people just need to realize that they can be creative, you just need to do the work, and not just sit on social media saying they can't do anything blame the boomers and beg for upcummies, Millennials can have a redemption arc they just have to try

Yes yes I agree that is another point about this generation, most people can't understand parody or satire very well, and don't quite understand that tropes exist for a reason, and you don't need to entirely avoid them but understand how to use them properly, Hell even Bionicle with all the uniqueness it has it still has tropes
and the other point is very true, sadly too many people will see something and try to copy it wholesale without any nuance, sadly Millennials seem to have a little too much copy cat nature to them, but I also feel this is a symptom of social media which doesn't encourage new and interesting things, but things people already like

Even if he was referring to gen Xers, that feels like a factor in how everyone after them began to miss details and never try to learn from mistakes.

I know firsthand from being apart of another toy fanbase that came from something around Bionicle's time. Acceleracers, a mediocre toyline for Hot Wheels in 2005-2006. It ended on a cliffhanger and since the community formed proper 10 years after the series died, they've bugged people to bring it back.
Instead of realizing what made it good, they took after Millennials by painting the series as some masterpiece, that it was flawless fearing they would be critiqued into the ground. (Which is something both gens have unintentionally created) They'll waste times making the same fan theories, most of which don't make sense while trying to make sense of poor writing and plotholes. They forget the series was meant to sell toys and when told if they liked the story so much to make a spiritual successor, they think you're the mad one. (Mind you, they'll write shitty fan fiction with interesting ideas, but either never finish them or never bother to redo them once they become better at writing) There's barely any artists, and any attempts to open the gates for more people to enjoy the series are shot down when these Brazilian manchildren think it's funny to mimic the scalpers they hate just for laughs, not realizing this is keeping people who might have a passing curiosity from engaging with the series and fans in any way.
In a sense, it mirrors the Bionicle fanbase, not to a T mind you, but enough that these problems are noticeable and found in many things youth of the present enjoy.

Probably varies from person to person but 99% of the time I MOC I begin with a rough idea of what I want to make (size, colour scheme, revamp/OC, etc.) and then create it as I go without any additional planning. MOCs don't always turn out expertly this way, but I usually value the play experience more than the end result. Plus it's fun to think of new ideas to add on the fly.

You usually just start with one section and work your way from there. Most people start with the torso since it tends to be the most complex (if you're making a custom one at least), but if you have a good idea for any part of the MOC obviously you can start from there. Like if you were thinking "I wanna make a guy with a big crab claw!" then you'd start there and build the rest around that. There's also nothing wrong with just using a standard official set styled build like the Inika or Metru torso (especially if you're just starting out). It helps if you have an idea of what you want to make beforehand, but sometimes you can just stick pieces together and see where it goes.

I start putting pieces together randomly until I decide what I want the MOC to look like. Be it humanoid or beast-like.
But for that I'd have to see which pieces I have available, if I can make a small one or a large titan, color scheme is something to considerate too due to some pieces being made in specific colors.

This, I just dump pieces on the floor, smoke some weed, and just build whatever. I try to use more technic pieces to make my own parts rather than using excessive pre-fab limbs or torsos for a build. looking for references helps too, mostly just to learn how pieces can be used.

In my opinion you shouldn't make things custom only for the sake of them being custom. When I build the frame or inner structure of a MOC I try to be as minimal and straightforward as possible. That said, it's still pretty rare for me to use Bionicle torso pieces, those upper arm/thigh pieces or CCBS frame pieces, because most of the time they don't fit the silhoutte and proportions I'm aiming for, make it difficult or impossible to connect some pieces in the exact place and position I want, or they're too bulky or stick out too much.

In my case after doing that I added more details, changed parts, armor, added weapons, different limbs or whatever my autistic imagination wanted. Then I decided that I either wanted to build a monster, a titan or an armored shadow Toa with bat wings and so on.
It's genuinely entertaining but also stressful if you can't find a specific piece.

My first Hero Factory alongside Toa. They are nothing alike, the plastic is so shiny and glossy compared to the almost matte finish of an oldschool bionicle. Very impressed, I always avoided CCBS because of Star Wars but now I want another.

It's so good, all this time I had no idea. And for the value, considering how cheap you can find them for locally. I really don't want to get addicted to these...

Although he is very cool, as a small and non-humanoid kit, I understand he is not indicative of the entire line.

I want to buy one more to explore the theme. Right now I am looking at a Hero Factory Scorpio that's going for cheap, but there's also a 2015 G2 Gali (Basically A Hero Factory, they share the same system, and just curious about G2...) so I'm torn between what to get next.

I really like the look of those dinosaur shaped heads on the beast guys and ideally I'd get Crystal Beast if I could, but I can only get what's available to me.

My experience is limited. I don't really have any advanced Toa to compare it to, I only have 2 Mahri. But compared to primitive early Toa, I don't really see how some people say CCBS is dumbed down. They both kind of seem the same just done differently.

Ah so you picked him up after all. If you're looking for more, stick to the Breakout wave for now. Outside of Invasion From Below it was the best wave, but there are some good thigns to be found outside of that. Some recommendations since I came into most of the series from a lot last year.

Biggest CCBS set by far, pushed the entire framework to its limits. Not the best kit overall, but he's impressive to look at for sure.

The "Creature" side of CCBS hardly was put to use, so these are some of the best examples we got. Waspix is a personal favorite

More Breakout sets. Really solid builds to be found with these, and some hella nice parts, too.

They're just Bionicle, you can't go wrong with any of them. Von Nebula and Rotor are peak, but the rest are solid.

If you're looking at G2 Bionicle, go with a Master to start. Any of them are fine, they're solid builds as a whole. If you like that, try a Uniter and Umarak the Hunter. The rest are up to you.

As far as G2 stuff goes the Protectors are pretty underrated. They have a good amount of build variety for the size and are nice Matoran-type sets overall. I think it's cool that despite them all having the same gimmick projectile weapon, it's incorporated in completely different ways on each of them. The only thing that really brings them down is the duplicate mask molds, which is why I only have 2 of them currently.

I don't think i bought a single protector because they were so expensive where i live. I think they were more than a regular G1 Toa.

I liked Brain Attack, the overall aesthetic and the new parts too (the new torso shell, the small torso frame, the ball joint extender, that new 1x3 technic piece with the ball in the middle, that visor piece etc).

Mask Maker versus Skull Grinder is also a great G2 set. You get an awesome Protector sized figure in Ekimu, the awesome Mask of Creation, and fantasy Satan Terminator to fight them. I also really dig the upgraded Ekimu as well. Umarak the Hunter is a fantastic set, as is the Destroyer, but I prefer Kulta.

I was all in for the Skull Army in G2, so I missed picking up the protectors. But with how cool mini Ekimu was, the rest of the protectors were great. I couldn’t care less about the Masters, though.

I have a Protector of Stone that I came into possession, not a huge fan of him but I can see a lot of the charm. Simple, small sets that fill in a niche.

I wish I liked Brain Attack more. The creatures just looked ugly for the most part, and the heroes felt at their most barebones. Parts introduced were great, yeah, but beyond that it was a really weird wave.

I'll shill the skeletons all day, but I figure those are more of a tough sell for people. Mask Maker vs Skull Grinder is a pretty solid set though for the stuff you get in it.
