How came this line didn't became popular ? This is such an awesome line that I am sure both boys and girls would like.
And why didn't it even get a cartoon show ? even Karate kid and Conan get a cartoon series, but not this toyline

Cels exist indicating a toon almost happened. But it went against She-Ra, coupled with being a different scale no one could use their She-Ra clothes with them. Funny though, this is an 80s line aimed at girls but looks like a 90s indie comic full of slutty women.

Something to bear in mind is that Golden Girl and She-Ra both hit shelves in 1985 and Golden Girl had 27 fashion packs, a girly element She-Ra didn't add until '86. For girls, bikini armor or a one-piece swimsuit might have been no more of a turnoff than a Barbie packaged with a molded-on swimsuit and outfits sold separately.
Without a cartoon, I don't think it's possible to even guess how popular it could have been.

You’d be surprised. One of the reasons She-Ra was created is because girls would steal their brother’s Motu figures. Just because the Golden Girl figures look more Vallejo/Frazetta than Barbie doesn’t mean young girls don’t find that empowering. Kicking ass is still the same in a metal bikini.

I’d personally love to bring this line back. The biggest issue would be who it’s aimed at. It doesn’t fit neatly into any one box. That could be a good or bad thing.

They were Galoob, right? So Hasbro would own it. Theoretically, unless someone else had the rights & Galoob only made the toys. Hasbro would NEVER make a line of women in bikini armor(I get the feeling they didn't even like making the new Angela, but Disney wanted to spite Todd). Maybe if Hasbro doesn't own it Mattel might seek to drag it into MOTU when they focus harder on She-Ra.

Did Karate Kid or Conan get toys for 2 years?
Besides hard fantasy was not so popular with girls. Even She-Ra was more girly. Maybe in the 90s with the girl power it could have been more successfull!

Yes, Galoob produced them. They even renew regularly the copyrights. Question is if Mattel doesnt have enough She-Ra characters to work on. Sun-Man is a different thing. Because He-Man has little POC characters, it is historical and not from a big competitor. So licensing is justified.

It is clearly more inspired by Frazetta and Conan. So it is more boys orientated and only get the tom boy girls.

The cartoon was apparently a full production that was shown in at least one theater as a promotion for the toy line, but chances are it will never be seen again and is probably lost media. It would be wonderful if someone found the reels and digitized them, but I'm not holding my breath.

The art is just bananas though.

Judging by the comic anon post and share >>9738422
I think the show story would be a mix between MOTU and Visionaries where
each episode is mostly center around two parties, the bad girls and the good girls enter some competition like sworft fighting, horse riding, and other contexts.
Each week , the stories would also teach some good lesson to kids to become better person, and time and time again,
Golden girl and her friends would help up kids in the show who were in trouble.

You can tell that artists were confused by the toy designer's unique design for Golden Girl's lower legs (echoed in her bracers).
She's clearly barefoot with greaves, but the greaves have "swirly" holes where her flesh isn't covered and there's a cover for the top of the foot with no sculpting to indicate a hinge for when the wearer's ankles are in motion.

And the designers just went for a unique aesthetic on the main heroine. The other good girls all wear normal calf boots.

I think amount both the good girls and bad girls, Dragon Queen and Moth Lady stood out the most with their unique design.
Dragon Queen had white pale skin and a full black body suit while Moth Lady had purple armour with moth wing, both very different from other girls

It’s unfortunate this line will probably stay dead. It has a lot of promise for a modern update, especially with the advancement in 1/12 clothing. I just don’t think Hasbro cares to bring it back, or would even know how to market it if they did.

I’d be curious to know if a similar line could even work in today’s market. Would people be interested in buying a main figure and a bunch of separate accessories/clothing packs? I can’t think of a modern equivalent to compare it to.

There is only an european comic, i think German and french.
Otherwise there is a picture book, 2 colorbooks, 1 activity book, 4 audio books, 2 audio plays, 3 „your own story“ books. The cartoon is just a pitch version and some pic reels for toys exist that could be taken from the pitch production.

There is no technology in what i saw so far. The only technology is in the cartoon pitch, what could be just the writers thing. The world is overall described like Conan or Red Sonja.

Thats always the thing with early fiction adaption, they differ and are interpretations of what they toy producer said. Like the early MotU comics were more Conan and Teela was green skinned.

Monster High or Barbie. But we see with other lines, it became season doll with new clothes. I dont know if this toy line would succeed today. It is not "girly" enough, not "fashion" focused and too hard fantasy. Thats why you still have to give kudos to the creators that they tried to mix action figures with fashion, some sort of fashion changing, horses and hair combing gimmick.
In my opinion if you reboot it, it needs heavy story focus. Maybe make it more esotheric and astrological.

The thing is that you have different approaches for the groups. While the Guardian designs are restricted by the gemstone they represent, the bad girls are more free and have animal restricted designs.
But what is astonishing is that this toyline was designed by real fashion designers. Some concept sketches exist.

If they did a line of higher-grade 1:6 scales of these characters like Mattel tried with She-Ra a few years back, I’d like to think they might have seen some success..? Though I suppose the 1:6 She-Ras never caught on for a reason…

I dont think they will be very successfull. When you look at successfull 1/6 doll lines they are all very colorfull and realistic fashion.
Monster High are monstergirls but like our world. You had WWE dolls but it didnt catch on. It has their fans but it wasnt that big to make more dolls.
