Personally I'd rather they just go full exodia with him and sell him in like 6 parts to spread out the purchases and let them focus more on cramming as much detail in every little part of this 5 foot tall city bot.

The Fanstoys have the best stunticons by far. But hey, the TFM one is decent now & was good for its time. It was a better stand in for the CW if you wanted something different to G1. X-Transbots I can kind of agree with. They look good but they are trash functionality wise, especially the original G1 version they released. The toy version is decent & fixed some of the issues like the weak arms that can't hold the gun up but still has that absolutely horrid transformation. But hey at least they can form Menasor. Try doing that with Fanstoys lol.

I dunno, man. I got the Toy version XTB Wildrider and I love him, to the point I almost want to get the other Toy Stunticons (not the trailer though, I have zero interest in the combined mode).
What puts me off the FT Stunticons aside from the fact I don't care enough about Sunbow Menasor to want an MP one, and of course

is that the limbs are the size of Seekers despite being cars. The DX9 ones had the same problem.

The Stunticons will always be a fundamentally fucked set of toys because they were implausably designed within the show. Either something won't be sized correctly, mass-partsforming will be involved, or they won't use the admittingly weak combined Sunbow design.

Maybe it's just because it's unpainted but it's pretty lackluster if I'm being honest. The poses feel stiff and while I'm sure the articulation is fine and it can do anything you need it to but it still comes off as rigid.

I really doubt SS has anything to do with it considering we're comparing CHUG scale to MP scale. People generally don't buy the smaller scales to stand in for larger scales so nobody who wants MP is buying SS to stand in for their MP collection. I think the main issue is that a lot of people already have them and Gigapower have everyone a pretty respectable alternative and for a more reasonable price. FT Dinobots are still pretty damn good and hold up well today IMO but they are absurdly priced. Plus, I think a lot of people who missed out originally might be waiting to pull the trigger on them because FT still hasn't reissued the full team and some folks won't even bother getting any of them if they can't complete the team. I bet they would sell more if, at the very least, they reissued Grimlock (plus I still hold out hope they'll eventually do a prototype G2 colors Grimlock).

If anything is REALLY causing them to not sell as well though, I bet you it's actually MS and NA. Ever since those two hit the scene, some people have started shifting their collections towards legends scale because it's cheaper (though both have started to increase their prices making it less so) and takes up way less shelf space. For folks who have been in the game for a long time, a lot of us no longer have room for a bunch of big MPs. Even though neither company has actually done the Dinobots yet, everyone sees it as only a matter of time and is probably just waiting for the day they do and not bothering with FT's offerings anymore.

Fuck no it's not. I'm going to be honest here and say Motormaster and Menasor are pretty fundamentally fucked designs in G1, both toy and toon. The scales don't make any sense and for some 3p companies that do just make Motormaster the cab and the trailer into the Menasor body, they still try to get away with fake parts to pretend the entire cab turns into Motormaster's feet and the rest of his body materializes out of thin air. Hasbro's Legacy offering took the smart approach by only making part of the cab become the feet and not trying to pretend parts are coming from where they aren't or hiding where other vehicle parts end up in bot mode. You get something that at least evokes the G1 look but but adjusted to be more believable.

Because we actually buy MP style figures, unlike most people on /toy/'s 3P threads. There's a lot of here-say about Fanstoys on these threads based off mostly some QC issues, but theres a reason people who actually collect MP stuff swear by them. The first 5 years of 3P MP stuff was marked with a ton of shoddy fly-y-night companies cranking out product and FT stood head and shoulders above the rest. The other company that was regularly making 3P MP figures back then I truly like is Maketoys. And even now FT is still ahead of their competition even if their prices are ridiculous now.

I still have some XTB/KFC pieces, but most of them are mediocre or down right horrendous. Pic related is trash that I'd regret buying if not for the cool car mode. Parts are pushed to their brink in regular transformation. Its a figure designed and tested entirely on computer and not as a hand held toy. FT transformations can be nightmares, but they're tedious, not outright stressing you'll break the toy.

Magic sizes were a thing in G1 if you try to scale every vehicle correctly Bruticus will end up with one arm that is nearly 40 meters and another that is about 15 not to mention the legs will also be uneven and neither will reach 10 meters. Size-shifting was an unfortunate but interesting consequence of the Micron line being part of the deal. I view it as a non-outlier outlier power that used to be much more rare, but due to the attrition of the war almost half of all Transformers can change size somewhat (Optimus Prime being an obvious and interesting exception, and Broadside as an extreme example).

To be fair, the Cons are way more willing to try to play God and experiment on their own in attempt to gain the upper hand, often against the will of the bots undergoing the procedures. In a lot of continuities, combiners are the result of experimentation and modification and an overall unpleasant process to undergo. You can look at it like the Con combiners are the result of so many attempts and these were the most functional results. The Autobots having fewer of them is just a result of them realizing what the process entailed and after only a few of them, they decided not to subject any more of their own troops to it. It's also part of why the Autobot teams work better together, because they willingly signed up for it versus the Con teams who were subjected to it against their will. Even if some of the Con teams worked fine together when they were just a normal unit of regular bots, being forced into a part of a larger singular body ruined some of that cooperation they may have already had.

The toy-inspired decos continue to look interesting and have retro charm, but I’m already committed to the toon versions and want to stay consistent. Shattered Glass deco is meh. I’m impressed that they were able to cram that much articulation into the targetmaster.

The Cyclonus mold looks amazing, and it has one of my favorite engineering tactics of stuffing large sections of the alt mode into the torso. Newage also did this with their Shockwave, and I would love to see them pull off the same trick with the ladder on an Inferno figure (like Takara’s MP).

Defensor and Menasor still have valid opposing dynamics though, and I would argue more compelling conflicts compared to just being total opposites for the sake of being different in every way. Having something in common is what makes the rivalry work.

Look at it this way. The Protectobots are public service vehicles meant for saving lives and restoring order. The Stunticons are vehicles all about thuggish, reckless, lawlessness and the types willing to cause the very accidents and damage that the Protectobots aim to restore. Both are non military land vehicles that put them on believably equal footing but their conflicting team themes establish put them at understandable odds with one another. Both still possess drastically different skillsets and specialties to keep it from being a full same-vs-same but they retain some connective tissue to make them all even match.

Same principle with Superion and Bruticus. It actually doesn't invalidate Computron vs Abominus either since your points of intelligence and calculation versus raw instinct and chaos still stand while their connective tissue to their rivalry is their lack of any earthly ties. Both are bizarre space modes which means their differences can count as their similarities too.

They're okay. The leg guys had some breakage issues (not hard to fix imo it's mosible just pins popping out) and they're all really tricky to transform but you can do way worse when it comes to 3P transformers. Their modes are all pretty solid it's just transforming them that's the problem.

They're usually cheap whenever they pop up in stock, I'd keep an eye out if you're interested it's usually only around 200$ for the set.

Why do people love magic square so much more than newage i just dont get it to be honest here then guys?
They make their figure of cheap looking plastic that resembles the kind of 3d printed stuff that you would find on etsy all the time then and all of there transformations look just about as unfun and stupid as takeras only justat a legends scale whereas newage simplify there transformations for the better and have better face sculpts too.

Whoa, you weren't kidding. The blue almost looks sliiiightly translucent at the edges where it gets thin. Thing is, I actually love this cheapo kinda look, so I would be totally on board...except they're charging way too much. A toy that looks like this should be $25 max.

Never buy the first run of their figures. MS pretty much always release a painted version about 6-12 months after the initial release of a figure. The first (unpainted) version only exists to trick impatient idiots into double-dipping. As for their transformations being too complicated, maybe stick with mcdonalds toys if you're too hamhanded to enjoy and savor their complexity.

My biggest question is which kind of repaints MS will do for their Optimus Prime. Because I wanted a painted one with transparent glass but I don't want the tights to be in metallic silver.

If they did a color scheme like the 1st version of Newage OP it would be perfect but if they are gonna stick with full metallic versions with silver tights I prefer the unpainted one.

They are all in his chest as part of a transformation armature, as well as a block of it behind the grill. The block behind the grill likely won't ever be an issue but be careful with the armature while transforming it. I've flipped him back and forth several dozen times now with no issue but you know how it goes. Age isn't always kind to diecast. I will also say, however, that the spring pins holding it together aren't super tight so it doesn't feel like you have to put any concerning amount of strain on them so I'm not too worried about it. I wouldn't blame anybody if they were though.

NA's scale isn't actually smaller, per se. It's more how they decided to scale everyone to each other which generally does result in smaller figures. Take their Prime and Megatron compared to MS. NA is actually only a hair shorter than MS on these two. Everyone else they've done so far actually lines up pretty close to the scale chart compared to those two. If anything, this makes MS's scale the more awkward of the two with characters and alt modes looking weirdly huge compared to their Prime and Megs.

NA's Bumblebee 2.0 actually fucking bothers me to no end. I like the impressive articulation it has but it hardcore falls into the toon trap with fake roof chests and giant chunks of the actual roof awkwardly hanging off the backs of the feet. I appreciate the feat of engineering that it is at that tiny scale but I still like 1.0 better both for aesthetic and because the alt mode actually scales more appropriately with the other carbots. I always thought Bee being arbitrarily teeny tiny was kind of dumb anyway. I really wish 2.0 was just 1.0 with better colors and working wheels.

I prefer MS over NA but just marginally. If MS threw some more paint, not even a full coat, I'd would then say that they're way better.
After that my biggest gripe with them is that the prices have increased a bit much considering how absurdly engineered their Devy was while being cheap.

After last thread I picked up that rts prime hero repaint that had been hanging around my local toy shop a while. Truck mode is a bit finicky to get everything lined up but bot mode is glorious. Gonna use him as a reformatted Scourge and stick him with my RiD autobots since scale is completely fucked with that line anyways. Magic Square and New Age are doing geewun legends yes, and they've been bitch-fighting each other for the past 2~3 years or so.

Iron Factory is also doing legends, but are now mostly focusing on their samurai themed designs.

MFT is still doing legends+ KOs of mostly Magic Square stuff while their branched-off company Mechanic Toys has been making geewun triplechangers (pic) and the 86 movie cast.

I got my Moon Studio Train pants and train torso today. I've only got the pants opened so far but does anyone else find that the hip assembly in the combined mode seems a little unsubstantial for lack of a better word? I guess I'll get a better feel when I combine them but I get the feeling I'm gonna want to loosen or lube the hip joints slightly. They're WAY too tight in robot mode anyway.

Also holy hell the instructions for Kaen are ass. They dedicate like half of the the sheet just to try and convey "flip his leg panels inside out" in the most confusing way possible. It's easier to just figure out the steps on your own.

Pretty good after getting his hip joints down to human-levels of strength. I really wish these combiner companies would avoid sharing joints between the robot mode and combined mode, especially leg joints.
