a) It's yet another thing that makes the whole model cheaper quality-wise along with shit like stickers in $100+ sets. It doesn't feel like a premium product and more like as if someone threw whatever they had left in the warehouse into it to maximize profits.
b) It often limits rebuildability and is one of the reasons for why you don't have alternative models on the majority of sets anymore.
c) There are a lot of instances where you can still see that stuff shine through.
d) There's no fucking point to it, construction-wise. Just grey-out the old step in the instructions and highlight what's new like almost everyone else from your competition and you're good to go.
Cobi tried that shit once with one of their ship sets and recieved massive flak to the point where they went back to using bricks that corespond to the model's colors again.
