It's a masterpiece style take on the character/figure, but more reminiscent of the original MP's that went for real world vehicle mode accuracy rather than slavish toon accuracy. Can't lie, it took me a while to get used to the inaccurate vehicle mode, but it still looks and feels great, and the bot mode is spot on.

Got Energon Snowcat today.

Overall, I like it, translucent plastic and loose skies aside, but it feels like I'm not transforming it correctly. In vehicle mode the top and bottom halves of the back end just don't seem to have any way to secure together, and if I pick it up the bottom half just falls out of place. Am I missing something here, or does it really have no way to secure?

When did this meme start about clear plastic and on which fancy website or discord did it get forced? I'm convinced it's just hamhands handling their toys like apes or because some also called Phazer back in the day would transparent always complain when a figure had painted windshields instead of transparent like on the Car Robots Autobots.

There's your problem. I use one of these retractable keyboard dusters I got for free forever ago. The bristles are really soft and can usually dust something without knocking it over, plus you can pull them in most of the way to make them firmer, really good for getting out that caked-in dust when something's been on display for a long while.

When Hasbro started using it for load-bearing parts as a way to cut costs and they can't hold up to the stress of repeated transformations. Having a translucent piece of plastic as an inset to a normal plastic frame isn't the same thing.

The Siege and ER versions of the Datsuns are a good example of poor planning, as the hinge that holds the car body to the back has to be constantly stressed during transformation, same with the tabs that held Siege Mirage's two car mode halves together.

I can't believe I don't have a picture of this. They look really good together, actually; very comparable in terms of height, at the head anyway. And if you have the Hasbro release of MP-10, the reds and blues match pretty nicely. In alt mode, Laser Prime is comically huge, though; MP 10 compacts way more during transformation. Maybe I'll get motivated enough to take a pic later. Here he is with Delta Magnus as a consolation.

QC wise it's pretty fantastic. All of the material feels good and sturdy and all of the joints are rock solid. The gray plastic looks great too, which I was happy with given how often HasTak absolutely botches it, even on MPs. The first one I got did have a slight issue; the black paint on one side of the hood was applied completely wrong. Ultimately I decided it bothered me enough to warrant a return.

Not sure what they go for now, but I think I got it for like $90, right from FansHobby. This is a stellar chunk of plastic for that kind of cash.

So I want to start collecting Transformers. My nostalgia is tied to the original 80's cartoon, the unicron trilogy one in the early 00's and of course Beast Wars.

Which line should I look into? I don't want to spend much more than $50. I mainly plan on messing around with the figures while watching tv, and then eventually displaying them in cool poses. I was looking at the new Legacy line and it seems pretty good for me since a lot of the figs are blend of G1 inspired if not straight up G1. Is this line worth getting into or is there a better one?

"generations" is the line. Legacy is the phase.
Generations Kingdom was filled with G1 and beast wars. Some are on clearance right now at your local walmart
they also might be clearancing out the re-issue of the original beast wars toys that happened just last year.
But not wanting to spend more than 50? Total? That's not going to happen in today's economy. That's 2 of the smaller toys like the insecticon.

All rest are 3p figures who's engineering actually aim to cover unsightly gaps as well as using quality paint apps.

Gaps in Hasbro mainline figures are very unsightly in comparison. Ratchet here is a perfect example. He does in fact disappoint compared to say Brawn here.

So I just got laser prime and...
what the FUCK is wrong with everyone complaining about him. He's great. The way everyone talked I expected his arm movement to be severely limited, but it's not. He just can't reach straight up in the air. Everything else is fine.
And the transformation is really something particularly how the red panel flips out to avoid any gaps in his back in robot mode. Not to mention the trailer more than makes up for the reuse of simplistic leg transformation from previous optimus toys.
I honestly think they should retool him into a last knight optimus. Shouldn't be too hard, mostly just adding a rotating joint to the shoulder pylons should be most of the work.

Oh, and to the anon thinking he'd make a good TFprime Ultra Magnus, now that I've got him in hand I'd say it would be super easy to do so. I didn't really understand how the arm transformation worked before, but the entirety of the front of the chest can be replaced with something more ultra magnusy, and the forarms can become more tapered. Swap out the colorscheme and you're set.
In fact, I'd say that if you get a good replacement head you can probably customize one yourself

It's not just the shoulders, it's a combination of a bunch of problems that shouldn't have been problems. The legs look off, because they're largely re-used from Siege/Earthrise Prime, which just makes it look like they were cutting corners. It especially looks like they were cutting corners when the legs have big gaps in the back, which Siege and ER Prime didn't have. It's a new Prime for an entirely new line, why are they reusing parts from an old Prime, and making those parts worse at that? Every previous iteration of Laser Prime has had nearly full shoulder range, which is important for a robot that has a sword to pose with, yet Legacy has less. And the only apparent reason it does seems to be the transformation scheme, which was made much more complex than the original for seemingly no reason, as the original worked perfectly well and wouldn't take much effort to adapt. The trailer lacks several armaments the original had, and the sword needs to combine with a pizza cutter to be the same relative size as the original.

If you like the Legacy figure, good for you, but that doesn't invalidate the criticism from other people. This is an entirely new trilogy of lines, and this is the first, and likely signature, Prime of that trilogy. It's at a leader price-point in a time Transformers are their most expensive yet. Hasbro should have spared all the budget and effort to ensure this figure was amazing, and instead they produced a side-grade to a figure designed in the 90's.

This dude is better than expected. Feels really solid and heavy and like a premium figure. He's super bulky and weirdly doesn't have bicep swivels which was unexpected. He does have impressive butterfly joints due to the transformation so that's cool. I hate that modern premium figure are so complicated and unfun. This Optimus gives us an extremely accurate real world vehicle, fairly simple transformation, and a recognizable but unique look. Hasbro needs to take more chances on interesting concepts.

Do you anons use any upgrade kits for your robots?
This one for Terrorsaur is pretty damn good, it's got extra weapons which are nice and all, but the swivel hinge part they added to the wing joint let's you turn the wings upside down without part forming and it's just the thing this figure needed.
It'll look even better on the toy decos.

If you're only planning on buying from physical stores, you kinda missed most of the G1 and BW nostalgia stuff. The previous War for Cybertron phase had three series, Siege (pre-Earth modes), Earthrise (post-Earth modes), and Kingdom (mix of post-Earth G1 and BW). Plus Wal-mart had some exclusive 90s BW reissues that you still might find on its shelves. The current Legacy series is going to be a mix of the G1 and possibly BW characters they haven't yet gotten to (Blitzwing and Menasor, for instance), G1-ified Prime characters, UT characters, and some other miscellaneous stuff like G2 Prime.

All of these fall under the Generations line, which is the line for older kids/adults. There's also a Cyberverse line for younger kids, which is much cheaper, but sometimes has good stuff. Cyberverse designs are basically heavily stylized G1 designs. And then there's Masterpiece, but all of that will fall above of your 50 dollar max.

I just got back. I found a RED series Optimus Primal. And while I know these are heresy, I actually like this a lot. I think I am going to collect RED series for Beast Wars since I just need Cheetor and I am caught up with that line. I may pick up Legacy beast wars figs as I run into them, but as a kid I hated how jarring the kibble looked on the animal like transformers.

I just hope RED can start making more Beast Wars characters.

For G1 and other RID I am going to stick with Legacy.

Hasbro pulse has many of the beast wars figures from last year still in stock, but if you don't sign up for their $50 a year membership you have to pay for shipping on each item.
amiami also has some still in stock for really cheap due to being in yen, but then you have to pay shipping from japan so it might not be a good plan unless you're buying several at once.

Primal seems great so far. I was eyeing the Kingdom one but I just didn't like how he looked so when I ran into the Red it was perfect for me. Adding one more figure with yellowing issues, this one is a bit harder to spot so most people probably haven't noticed, I only learned about it because my friend told me. ER Quintesson's gun suffers from yellowing, so do some connection bits below the Quintesson faces. His cage apparently yellowed as well, but I can't tell if mine's started to yellow. It's easy to ignore if you don't transform it but it's still a bummer.

So does every Battle Across Time Sideswipe have loose knees? I got his set a few days ago and that copy had them, ordered a replacement because of other issues (crap paint) and the replacement has them annoyingly loose too. He doesn't flop or anything, but it takes too little to get them moving.

That aside, I got the set just for Skywarp, but Sideswipe is pretty good too. I'd seen a lot of praise thrown around for this mold, and I honestly didn't "get it" until I had him in hand. He's a very satisfying figure. I've been entirely focused on BW stuff so this is the first modern carbot I've gotten, and he's so good it makes it tempting to branch out more. But for the sake of my wallet I'll try to refrain.

It gets a lot of flak compared to most of the other ROTF-toy exclusive figures, but I fucking love the Dirge mold, more specifically the two Botcon repaints of it. It's one of the rare cases where the FunPub head is not only decent but actually better than the original toy's head. Thundercracker's Olive Green/Maroon camo and Skywarp's mid-teleportation paintscheme with the transparent purple plastic are absolutely fabulous decos. The best part is you can still find them for around $50 each, which is pretty cheap in terms of Botcon exclusives.

WFC was the start of it but at least then they had a competent lead designer who came up under the old guard making sure shit didn't get too bad. Then he left and the job got passed to Lenny who had a dogshit design record. The worst thing is that I skipped most of Kingdom aside from Airrazor, Rattrap, and Terrorsaur (I just got Blackarachnia and holy shit she feels cheap) because I am an MP cuck and have all of those, but now I almost feel like backtracking.

I also have the Buzzworthy 4 pack with Nemesis Primal and toy Blackarachnia but those don't count in the scheme of the show characters.

I immediately preordered Tarantulas and am just waiting to see what the last few BW guys are.

Debating on going back and buying all the others, but the breakage and yellowing photos people keep posting worry me. Now I know why HasTak keeps painting over the same plastic colors on the MP offerings.

Besides how much I paid for him, my only real complaints with Terrorsaur (for what he is) is articulation. His beast butt renders his waist pretty useless, and his head is perplexingly either on a swivel or a balljoint so restricted it may as well be a swivel. They got the heads right on both Airazor and Skywarp, so this just pisses me off. On a flyer of all things.
That aside, he's a handsome lad.

Maybe at some point in the design process the other sections formed part of the shoulders but they changed it for clearance reasons. It looks better just kept as a whole car chunk and would probably be cheaper to make it like that.

The RID one is strange, as it got very close to good in several ways, but the end result is really... not good.
Like, they needed to keep his car roof on the back, so his forarm could be a real forarm. The door arm needed higher placement and it would have been great. The shoulder wheels should have locked in at an angle instead of sticking directly back, and he needed a better paintjob in robot mode. It all went ot car mode basically.
Maybe we'll eventually get a "studio series Transformers Prime" line.

Transformers Generations Thriling 30s Skrapnel (and Reflector)

As an insect Skrapnel is a bit disappointing, none of his legs have any movement or anything.
But as an Insecticon I think he's pretty cool.
Though the use of a bunch of hard angles he recreates the shapes of stag beetle mandibles and abdomen in a way my eyes find pleasing.

Colours are classic insecticon. Yellow, purple, black. What else could you need?
The way the rivets are placed to look like beady little bug eyes is a brilliant move.

Reflector is just a little man laying down that also looks sort of like a camera from some angles.

G1 Shrapnel was handy so I'll use him for comparison. for comparison

But even if you include an extra step or two in the conversion that doesn't stop and insecticon from looking like the same thing but vertical now.
What is different is now he actually has joints.
Four ball joints, two in each limb I'm sure you'd guess. And a neck swivel.

To let you see behind the curtain; this checklist started as an old Monsterarts checklist I had kicking around.
I imagine all the different colours made more sense for a slower paced more high end line of figures that collectors may also have been more prepared to flip later.

I don't even like UT stuff but yeah, show this shit. Unironically some of the better figures from this line are redos of UT guys. The only ones that suck are the Prime characters and honestly I think it's more of a headsculpt thing from my perspective.

At this point I think they need to give her the "Voyager" Hot Rod treatment. It's become obvious they can't make a good arcer with the deluxe part count, and frankensteining together two separate molds was not the solution. I just saw the Dr. Wu legends Arcer, and am amazed how much better it looks than the official at such a small scale. Just crazy.

Only thing that bothers me is the nerfed and hollow thighs. Never liked the lipstick on the face but that's just the design. The new stomach is infintiely better than the weird old one.
