Really has to be a toss-up between the Evatchi and the Extellatchi, mainly due to IPs of course. Got my hands on a Jordy model with the case and it's wicked cute, can't wait to run it!

Unfortunately the twistetchis have faulty buttons and inconsistently miss inputs or duplicate inputs from one press. They have a better chance of registering if you push down really hard but that's super uncomfortable for the tiny buttons on the nano

so that kind of turned me off running them desu

They weren't widely available when they first came out, and now they're over 20 years old so they're hard to come by for sale

Tamagotchi prices are universally ridiculous universally right now, it's been a downward spiral since covid. The collector groups used to be a bastion of sanity but now they're full of people that have caught onto the trend and are trying to sell things for the highest price they can get away with rather than having any concept of what something is actually "worth" relative to the actual content and rarity of different versions.

What's really bad right now is people capitalising on the hysteria around the On now being out of production, those are going for 200 or more now. And since those are still considered "normal" recent tamas, all the older tamas are inflating relative to that. Used P's going for 250 or more, it's obscene

I'm glad I ticked off most of the list of what I wanted before things got farcical, but now there's a few that I'm feeling less confident about not just finding but finding at an acceptable price

Is there any hope in the jp market? It's genuinely shocking how quickly stuff goes from available in all retail stores to impossible to obtain nowadays. Has anyone had luck with bargain stores getting ons in cause that feels like the only hope. I got a bunch of new and like-new plus and color era JP tamas from occasional searching of Mercari and Yahoo JP, a lot of it comes down to being lucky with timing.
There's also Mandarake but I've never actually bought anything from there, I don't know how reliable the online store is (eg are the photos of the actual device you're buying or just a photo they had on archive)

I've never thought of Jurassic Park as a franchise with any cultural relevance in Japan, I could be wrong on that but it feels super strange that they would release it in Japan and not the US.

The weird thing is, usually when a nano is released in both regions they announce it in both regions around the same time don't they?

Not exactly. I think the Toy Story one's USA release wasn't announced for a little while after Japan's announcement, and Evatchi and Demon Slayer's were even later. The only one in recent memory that had a dual release was the R2 Tamagotchi.

it's funny that Lovelitchi's design is so busy that she can't really be depicted accurately on a screen with such a low resolution. i was never really a fan of the newer, more anthropomorphic designs but she grew on me quickly after i got her on the pix.

That's neat for fans I guess? Personally I feel that there are way more interesting and fitting IPs that Bandai could use. It looks like all you can do is raise the meme loli in different outfits, seems a little boring. Those shells are cute though.

The digital die is the XAI, which has you randomly roll between 1-7 to determine the difficulty of your battles that day. You've got the major daily roll at the start of the day that determines the rate of random encounters and item drops, the quest roll that determines the overall strength of your opponents, and then the rolls you make during each battle for your own Digimon's accuracy rate.

Compare the prices, that will give you your answer. JYW only uses premium shipping which is expensive. Amazon probably has better shipping rates because they're a large corporation that get a better deal

imo JYW's most useful for discontinued products and there are better ways to get products still in production and readily available

My only comment about that is JYW aren't above marking up the price of items based on perceived rarity/desirability.
Eg they're selling the Sanrio Smart set for 80USD when it's 55~60 USD at different japanese retail stores like Amazon or Yodobashi Camera.

For things like P-Bandai I prefer to buy through a proxy, that way I'm getting the actual retail price instead of an inflated price and the shipping cost is comparable, so it's a better deal overall

JYW is convenient but rarely ever the best deal. They can be good for older discontinued tamas if it's not a specific device/shell they've decided should be heavily inflated, but they're never my first choice for things that can be bought directly through a proxy.

They exist for the novelty of having a tamagotchi with characters from X brand. Very low maintenance, glorified keychains even, the charm is having the character on the screen and pressing a couple of buttons on it every now and then

20th will sleep through the night, but sleep time doesnt count towards evolution time.

X sleep time counts towards evolution time, but as a result it will start screeching in the middle of the night to evolve if you dont time it, pause it, or mute it.

Oldschools could evolve at night, but were clever enough to not announce it at full volume.

for the latter you might just be able to clean the buttons, otherwise you can replace the buttons by getting another tama as a parts donor

Even as a long time fan of the series I don't get the appeal but the same could be said for a lot of the tie in nanos.
I guess I don't find tamogachis interesting unless I'm taking care of a monster or robot.

The device encourages you to not touch it when it goes into its cocoon stage (different forms based on how long you dont press anything). Every angel only has 2 sprites. Angels always die in 3 days. It literally doesnt matter if you take care of it or not, the only difference is the death cutscene. The whole thing felt completely pointless.

As a base character, she's available on both models of the Friends. She's a Pierce character on the P's, a marriage partner on the purple Dream M!x (I was able to make my Tamas marry her many times until I got a purebred Pianitchi), and a NPC on the Pix.

all of them are a little different, but theyre all based off the og nano. it's like a p1 but without a weight stat, meaning there's no inherent reason to play the games as opposed to giving it treats. this makes the happiness and hunger bars essentially identical, since you fill both by feeding it. as well, most of them only have a single 24h long child stage, after which there isn't any penalty for neglect, with the exception that they'll die if sick for 24 hours straight. personally i recommend the hello kitty nano, as it uses actual tamagotchi characters, incetivises playing games, and does reward you for taking good care of your adult, if only for the first 2 days or so.
if this sounds boring, dont be too discouraged. its designed as a keychain first and a toy second, and the charm really shines through if you think of it as such. however, if you want a real toy, even the p1 is miles ahead in terms of depth

I like raising both "people" and creatures. The Nano characters feel more like "pocket-sized humanoid creatures" (like digitial Nendoroids) than like "humans" to me.

So I bought one of these guys brand new, like the original tape on the package and little paper slip were still in place new, put a new battery in and it doesn't work at all. I tried cleaning the contacts and putting in a battery that I know works and I'm still getting nothing. Does anyone have any advice?

I did, multiple times with different batteries. This sucks, I don't want to give up on it but I'm not sure what to do at this point. I also ordered a brand new JAL Akko one, which worked just fine.

Nanos are very low maintenance. I think a demon slayer fan would have a delightful time playing with it for a week or so and then it will become a cute collectible they can hang up. I think it's a good gift idea for anyone who already likes animu merch or vidya.

It introduced my favorite character so far, but then it's super easy to take care of, which is great on work days, but a bit boring on weekends when I want something more involved

I have mixed feelings about the rechargable battery introduction myself. Just concerned about how the batteries age over time if they eventually won't hold a charge or bloat? Kinda sucks for NIB collectors in that situation. I also like the added weight that replaceable batteries add to the device which make it feel more substantial. Since my AAs are rechargable it's nice swapping them out quick and easy on other devices.
I definitely feel you on wanting more involvement on days off work though. Also, I'd love to see more movement as well. The device is great but needs a bit more idle behaviors.

Hard to say.

Some of the more vintage characters would probably go back into the vault, but it wouldn't surprise me if they use the poll results to gauge interest and use that information to decide on potential future cards.

Otherwise they'd essentially be ruling out ever using a bunch of characters that they know are popular, which is dumb

I recently ran a couple again after taking a break and only got as far as 14 days old. I'd say careful about snacks on the classic original models more than any other device. Their health is more fragile it seems, and total snack count looks to have an impact on lifespan. I might be wrong, but that's been my experience so far. Spamming the game button will help lower their weight and raise happiness though.

Got the R2-D2 one. So far it's actually way more enjoyable than I would've expected. The games are really simple, which doesn't sound that good, but they're quick to do so it's fine. I don't like how I can't see if I need to "charge" it or what though. I'm assuming it'll just make noises when it needs attention?

Although I don't remember which means which, I usually just randomly toss him some batteries and head pats throughout the day. I know it's functionally the same, but I love how low maintenance the r2 one feels since if he "dies" he just starts over and he starts over at the end of the cycle anyway.

If you press the C button, R2 will tell you if it needs anything based on its animation.
Dizzy symbol (little tornado thing) means his battery is empty and needs to be charged.
Sulking mark (little black cross thing) means he's unhappy, polishing him or winning a game will help his mood.
For reference, the Nanos have four Hungry and four Happy symbols, just like the classic Tama pets.
If R2's meters aren't empty but his Happy meter isn't full, he'll do a little happy animation.
If neither meter is empty and the Happy meter is full, R2 will show a closeup.

So they were completely undesirable at their time of release, but these days they’re sought after by collectors wanting to tick off all the boxes. They didn’t sell well so scarcity is driving up prices now, especially for the dream town

She's not my favorite character, but I'm sort of hoping Pianitchi is the chosen one for the Anniversary card. Her color scheme coordinates really well with the new Smart itself. I'm just glad we got a chance to vote, so hopefully Bandai sees who fans are still interested in for future cards.

I've only ever brought a nano to work, but I hung it on my clothes and took care of it as needed. Nanos can be handled with minimal attention and you don't even have to look at them when you've memorized the correct button presses in response to the sounds they make (though I'm often free enough at work that I can look at the screen anyway). It's pleasant to carry a little companion around during a long work day.

Smart's not even a year old yet
They've been in a good rhythm of smacard releases, even increasing the amount of characters per card on the latest 5 cards

It's possible they could do a mix-meets and release a successor that's essentially a reskin of the previous version with a couple incremental improvements. There's no current precedent for add-on content to be supported on two separate versions but it's not impossible

I wouldn't expect an outright new version for at least another year or two

Not exactly true, the instruction manual lists examples of supported wall chargers.

They're only protective about how you charge it because the Smart can't be charged with modern phone fast chargers since they're too high wattage. Since it's ultimately targeted at kids they simplify how they explain it, but if you're an adult you can make informed decisions about what would be safe to charge it with

Does anyone have experience with sumikko gurashi toys? I've been collecting tamas for years and now I'm considering to get something different. The first time they did convention exclusives was at SDCC 2018. They had these metallic shells for the replica P1 and P2 models. But the wild part was that these were the first of the replica models on the market, which wouldn't be available at retail for another few months.
The last convention exclusive was actually this year at Star Wars Celebration, where they had the metallic R2-D2 Tamagotchi in commemorative packaging.

It's wild, in Japan the most iconic Tamagotchi shell ever made had no printing at all, just plain white with black buttons, but in the USA, we've had them with the logo for so long that they look wrong without it. It's why the new 2022 logo was such a culture shock, but I think I like it now.

Physical virtual pets have a feeling smartphone apps can't recreate. It's the way it feels in your hand, the sense of purpose and responsibility, it's clear and straightforward but surprisingly complex. Your Tamagotchi is your Tamagotchi. When it's on a phone, it's just another one of dozens of apps that pings you during the day. There's no connection. I feel like this is why the Tamagotchi port apps all vanished, because they just didn't have the same impact as the real things.

The parties are cute. You can invite another player's tama the same way as the original pix, but then you can also have three npc tamas join in. Or, if you don't have another person to invite, you can just use four npc tamas.
When they're over, they can do the usual hang out things, but there's a bingo game that I spent more time than I'd like to admit rerolling just to try and get the item.
Besides the party feature and a few items from it, it is 90% identical to the original pix, down to the finnicky sensitivity of swipes in the ping pong game.

You know how the Meets Magic and Fairy editions were mostly the same but just had a little bit of content swapped out? That's how I see the Pix Party. They did add a few additional meetable characters but the raisable characters are all the same besides 2 that have been swapped out.

Between the two, Pix Party is better simply because it's "pix plus a little bit more" unless you really want to raise weeptchi

Depends if you can handle the touch screen
Instead of it behaving like a normal touch screen it only recognises inputs in the four quadrants, so you should never try selecting anything from the center of the screen
most buttons are "hold to confirm" which makes navigation slow, and scrolling is finnicky because of the timing required and the quadrant regions

I'm probably not the best anon to answer that question because I don't own any Tamagotchi (yet) but you could look into the Pix.
It doesn't have real buttons and instead uses some touchpads (I think that's what they are) that can be a pain to use, not to mention the bad camera and bad battery life. However it has many cute characters and lots of mini games that change every day, some people claim that it's a good device after you adapt to the buttons.
It's also the latest outside of Japan and should be easier (and probably cheaper) to get.

Unfortunately most pre-mix color devices are pretty hard to find and/or unjustifiably expensive in the current market.

Pix is pretty good as long as you spam snacks as a baby to reach best pals tier (that way you get to choose when they leave instead of them instantly leaving after 7 days as an adult). The touch buttons seem to be luck of manufacturing, I've heard some say the Pix Party has better buttons than the Pix but my PP is less responsive than my P

Honestly even with downloadable content for both I still prefer the iDL.
The 4U adds a thing where it asks how you're feeling every day which is just a minor annoyance, but they also got rid of the teen stage so characters go baby > child > adult super quick

The main difference I guess is 4U supports downloadable characters and the iDL doesn't, but the iDL has 32 adults (28 if you don't have other devices to connect to) compared to the 4U's 10 adults without downloading more

I think if you're new, a Nano isn't a bad bet. You can get both the Smart and some Nanos on HLJ
Keep in mind though, the Smart is more standard Tama stuff, while a Nano is a simpler version, as in a "easy mode"

The PiX eats through batteries worse than most color tamas and the Smart is really watered down unless you buy the Tamacards. It's a good option for a newbie for sure. A good mix between a standard Tama and a Nano. If a Nano seems too simple and the Pix too advanced, the Smart isn't bad at all
Of course this is all coming from someone who is used to this shit. The menus are in Japanese, but you can easily find guides online, and the charging is finicky, but just plug it into your PC and keep an eye on it and it should be fine. How you turn it off feels weird though. It feels like you're absolutely doing something you shouldn't. Like you're breaking it. But it's been going fine for me so far and I haven't heard anyone say it has broken on them because of that so yea.
Buy a Tamacard with the device though. Otherwise the selection of characters is a bit lacking

I know this is blasphemy (probably), but is there any virtual tamagochi? Android, portable consoles from gba to 3ds and from psp to vita — anything works.

If you have a flash card you should be able to play it on a GBC emulator. You can also play it on the 3DS on a hacked system.

My wife and I always pick something small and silly for each other for anniversary gifts. Usually a collectible we want, or something that has some childhood significance. So I got her a Tamagotchi Pix. Now I'm sorta jealous because I remember having an all red one back around ~1998 I believe. Might have to pick up a more basic one or something.

If you can get a java emulator there's old Devilgotchi and Angelgotchis apps you can run. Just google Tamagotchi Monster or Tamagotchi Angel java game and you will find the roms
